The Fabrication of Stainless Steel-Uranium Dioxide Fuel Elements

Abstract: "Stainless steel-clad fuel sheet 0.020 in. thick with a 0.008-in. core of stainless steel plus UO2 was produced by roll cladding a powder metal compact. The effects of processing variables, core-matrix composition, quantity of oxide, and oxide particle size on the properties of the sheet were investigated. The strength and ductility of the core decreased sharply as the quantity of oxide in the core increased from 20 to 40 w/o. Over the range of matrix compositions investigated the particle size of the oxide had little affect on the core strength. In cores containing 21 w/o of oxide. 18 w/o chromium, 82 w/o iron matrix prepared from the elemental metal powders had the highest strength and ductility, but this matrix was susceptible to cracking during thermal cycling. As elemental 18 w/o chromium, 9 w/o nickel, 73 w/o iron matrix was the most satisfactory from the standpoint of fabrication and over-all characteristics of the resulting sheet."

Report presenting an investigation by the transonic-bump method through a range of Mach numbers in the high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel to determine the lateral-control characteristics of 30-percent-chord flap-type controls of various spans and locations. The wing of the semispan fuselage-wing combination had 60 degrees of sweepback of the quarter-chord line, a taper ratio of 0.6, an aspect ratio of 4.0, and an NACA 65A006 airfoil section parallel to the free air stream.

Correlation of wind-tunnel and flight determinations of the buffet speed of an airplane equipped with external stores

Tests were made in the Langley 7 by 10 foot tunnel on a model of a fighter-type airplane with external stores. The data obtained is presented and compared to flight-test results to determine the feasibility of estimating flight buffet Mach number from tunnel data.

Some properties of beryllium oxide and beryllium oxide - columbium ceramals

High-temperature tensile and thermal-shock investigations were conducted on beryllium oxide and beryllium oxide plus columbium metal additions. X-ray diffraction and metallographic results are given. The tensile strength of 6150 pounds per square inch for beryllium oxide at 1800 degrees F compared favorably with the zirconia bodies previously tested. Additions of 2, 5, 8, 10, 12, and 15 percent by weight of columbium metal failed to improve the shock resistance over that of pure beryllium oxide.

Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of several design changes on the performance of large-capacity, double-entry, centrifugal compressors. Four modifications of a turbojet engine compressor were operated over a range of equivalent impeller tip speeds an the compressor overall and component performances were determined. Results regarding the impeller performance, diffuser performance, and compressor performance are provided.

Effects of internal boundary-layer control on the performance of supersonic aft inlets

From Summary: "Removal of compression-surface boundary layer from the throat of a supersonic aft inlet is shown to increase the critical total-pressure recovery to values comparable to the better axisymmetric nose inlets. Throat bleed on two-dimensional and three-dimensional-type inlets by discrete slots or by porous plates has provided gains in critical recovery of as much as 7 percent at Mach number 2.0. A proper combination of bleed ahead of the inlet and at the inlet throat to control both fuselage and compression-surface boundary layer is shown to produce maximum values of propulsive thrust."

Chemical Stability of Purex and Uranium Recovery Process Solvent

The desirability of operating many of the Purex columns at elevated temperatures, ca. 50-70 C, has made it necessary to obtain data on the stability of the solvent at these higher temperatures. Since the present diluent, Shell Spray Base, will not be entirely safe at the upper temperature limit, a number of diluents with higher flash point have been investigated concurrently with Shell Spray Base. This report presents data covering the first phases of this investigation, namely, the effect of nitric and nitrous acid on the solvent at 71 C. or higher temperatures.

From July through December, a total of 1750 hr of computer time was used by programmers in "debugging" and in running problems. With the acquisition of a second operator, the evening shift was initiated. A night-shift operator is presently being trained, and third-shifts operations will probably begin after completion of the magnetic-tape memory. / Engineering time is regularly scheduled for 4 hr each morning and 1/2 hr late in the afternoon. An electronic technician is on duty during evening-shift operations. / Installations of the magnetic-tape memory units is complete, and the units are expected to go into operation in the near future. Work is continuing on the new input-output system.

Four D-12 coil nests have failed since the start-up of the Redox Separations plant. Due to the high contamination and radiation levels of these vessels, the cost of decontamination has prevented the examination of all but one of the four. It was hoped that the examination of D-12 pot #2 would lead to an explanation of all four failures. This report will deal primarily with the metallurgical examination of the failure of D-12 pot #2.

Memorandum presenting a determination of the thermal conductivity of 14 metals and alloys in temperatures ranges with a maximum of 1100 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the metals included steels, high-temperature alloys, molybdenum disilicide, aluminum alloys, brass, and silver. A comparison method was used to obtain the results in which the thermal conductivity of the test sample was compared with the conductivity of high-purity lead.

The drag characteristics of several airships determined by deceleration tests

This report presents the results of deceleration tests conducted for the purpose of determining the drag characteristics of six airships. The tests were made with airships of various shapes and sizes belonging to the Army, the Navy, and the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation. Drag coefficients for the following airships are shown: Army TC-6, TC-10, and TE-2; Navy Los Angeles and ZMC-2; Goodyear Puritan. The coefficients vary from about 0.045 for the small blunt airships to 0.023 for the relatively large slender Los Angeles. This variation may be due to a combination of effects, but the most important of these is probably the effect of length-diameter ratio.

There are two types of volume measurement consists of estimating the total volume in a vessel at some inventory time. A transfer measurement consists of estimating the volume between two levels within a tank.

In a section of the area occupied by the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colorado, a pilot plant is being erected to test a resin-in-pulp process. The process is based on the adsorption of uranium by resin from acid pulps. The first ores to be treated at this plant will be Monticello Stockpile Material. Samples of the various stockpiles sere subjected to a series of leaching, filtering and settling tests, the results of which are presented in this report.
