Report presenting the drag of a series of complete airplane-like configurations and their components at transonic velocities using the free-fall method. The configuration tested in this report has a 45 degree sweptback wing of aspect ratio 4.1 mounted forward of the maximum diameter of a 10-inch-diameter body of fineness ratio 12 equipped with stabilizing tail fins. Results are presented as curves showing the variation of drag coefficient with Mach number for the complete configuration and for each component.

The nose was jettisoned successfully on the second attempt and the accelerations produced were found to be within human tolerance. The first test ended with a collision of the nose and wing, indicating that this is a possible risk during power-on flight.

Report presenting a wind tunnel investigation to determine the downwash angles, dynamic pressure loss, and wake width behind wings with sweep angles of 45, 30, and 0 degrees. Results indicated that the spanwise distribution of downwash was affected by sweep in a manner similar to span loading, increased toward the root by sweepforward and toward the tip by sweepback.

Altitude-wind-tunnel investigation of AN-F-58 fuel in experimental version of J47 turbojet engine

An altitude-wind-tunnel investigation of the performance of AN-F-58 and AN-F-32 fuels in an experimental turbojet engine was conducted over a range of simulated altitudes and flight Mach numbers. Combustion efficiencies obtained with AN-F-58 and AN-F-32 fuels were approximately equal. The minimum-speed altitude operational limit was essentially the same with either AN-F-58 or AN-F-32 fuel. Starting characteristics of the two fuels were approximately the same at low wind milling speeds. Visual observation showed no apparent differences in the carbon-deposition rates of AN-F-58 and AN-F-32 fuels.

Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data are presented for a range of Reynolds and Mach numbers. The results indicated that no severe static-longitudinal-stability problems up to Mach number 0.94.

Some properties of beryllium oxide and beryllium oxide - columbium ceramals

High-temperature tensile and thermal-shock investigations were conducted on beryllium oxide and beryllium oxide plus columbium metal additions. X-ray diffraction and metallographic results are given. The tensile strength of 6150 pounds per square inch for beryllium oxide at 1800 degrees F compared favorably with the zirconia bodies previously tested. Additions of 2, 5, 8, 10, 12, and 15 percent by weight of columbium metal failed to improve the shock resistance over that of pure beryllium oxide.

Results of preliminary tests show that severe buffeting, wing dropping, and normal-force changes occur almost simultaneously near zero lift over a Mach number range near 0.9 on unswept wings 12 percent thick. On unswept wings 7 percent thick, buffeting did not occur; however, mild wing dropping and normal-force changes were experienced" (p. 1).

Correlation of forced-convection heat-transfer data for air flowing in smooth platinum tube with long-approach entrance at high surface and inlet-air temperatures

A heat-transfer investigation was conducted with air in an electrically heated platinum tube with long-approach entrance, inside diameter of 0.525 inch, and effective heat-transfer length of 24 inches over ranges of Reynolds number up to 320,000, average inside-tube-wall temperature up to 3053 degrees R, and inlet-air temperature up to 1165 degrees R. Correlation of data by the conventional Nusselt relation resulted in separation of data with tube-wall temperature. Good correlation was obtained, however, by use of a modified Reynolds number.
