An Exact Analysis of Limited Plane Plasma in a Magnetic Field (open access)

An Exact Analysis of Limited Plane Plasma in a Magnetic Field

Introduction: "Prior analyses of a plasma in a magnetic field have been limited, as far as the writer is aware, to cases in which the relative change in field over the orbital distance and the relative change in ion concentration are both small, or in which the relations have been viewed in a purely hydrodynamical way. The first approach excludes cases which can be of considerable interests, for it fails near a plasma edge. The second loses all sight of the structure imposed by the orbital motions."

Geological Investigation of Mexican Cry Mesa, Lukachukai District, Arizona with Diamond Drilling Recommendations

Abstract: The Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation of Mexican Cry Mesa, Lukachukai District, Arizona, was examined to determine size, grade, and distribution of contained carnotite deposits and the possibilities of developing reserves by exploratory drilling. Only three occurrences of carnotite-bearing sandstone were found in 17 miles of rim outcrop. Limited drilling is recommended in the vicinity of these exposures.

Investigation of Subsurface Isorad Methods, Temple Mountain, San Rafael District, Utah (open access)

Investigation of Subsurface Isorad Methods, Temple Mountain, San Rafael District, Utah

From abstract: The subsurface isorad method is an attempt to locate areas favorable for uranium ores by the use of contour maps which show localities having greater radioactivity. The construction of isorad maps entails the measurement of the area under the curve of a gamma-ray logo The figures obtained indicate relative amounts of gamma radiation and are used to locate the isorad contours. This work was started at Temple Mountain in the San Rafael Swell area during the spring of 1952. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the most effective and economic hole spacing for subsurface isorad work.

The Effects of Neutron Bombardment on the Electrical Resistance of Aluminum, Beryllium and Tuballoy (Uranium) (open access)

The Effects of Neutron Bombardment on the Electrical Resistance of Aluminum, Beryllium and Tuballoy (Uranium)

Abstract. Wigner effects on aluminum, beryllium, and tuballoy have been studied by the electrical resistance method. Samples were exposed during an interval which would have produced an increase of approximately 22% in resistance of AGOT-K graphite. The resistance of tuballoy increased approximately 1%. It is shown that the increase can be accounted for by the amount of fission product impurity formed during the exposure. Neither aluminum nor beryllium showed any change. In the case of Be, the Wigner effect may be obscured, to some extent, by the approximately .2 - .3 atom % of impurity present in the samples. Based on the increase occurring in ADOT-K graphite, a change of approximately .2 - .5 x10-6 ohm-om might be expected in the case of Be. The accuracy of the method was sufficiently great to detect a change of this magnitude. Other experiments with Be will be undertaken when purer samples are available. Meanwhile, some samples of the present type ae being subjected to further irradiation.

The Dissolution of Thorium Metal and Thorium Dioxide in HNO3 - HF and HNO3- ( NH4 ) 2 SiF6 Mixtures (open access)

The Dissolution of Thorium Metal and Thorium Dioxide in HNO3 - HF and HNO3- ( NH4 ) 2 SiF6 Mixtures

Abstract. A satisfactory method has been found for dissolving thorium metal and thorium oxide in heat-treated 25-12 stainless steel vessels without excessive corrosion of the vessels. The dissolution medium consists of strong HNO3 containing a small amount of fluoride or fluo-silicate. the fluoride required has no harmful effects on a subsequent solvent-extraction step for a separation of uranium isotopes from the dissolved thorium.

Columbia Scaling Circuits (open access)

Columbia Scaling Circuits

Abstract: "The advantages of high scaling ratios in counting random pulses are discussed. The mechanism of the basic circuit used in the Columbia University scaling circuits is described. The difficulties experienced in the performance of the earlier circuits are indicated and modified circuits to eliminate these difficulties are given. Precautions that must be observed in carrying out the constructional details are suggested. The complete circuit and specifications are given in detail for a Scale of 128 for use with linear-amplifier systems" (p. 1).

Resonance Absorption of Thorium (open access)

Resonance Absorption of Thorium

Abstract: Cadmium ratios for very thin (neutron and beta-wise) foils of thorium, gold, vanadium and indium have been measured in the glory hole of the WBNS. These cadmium ratios, together with the known thermal cross sections and a given calculated resonance integral for gold, were used to evaluare the resonance integrals of thorium, vanadium, and indium.

Dissolution of NaK (open access)

Dissolution of NaK

Abstract: "A rapid yet safe method for the dissolution of sodium-potassium alloys prior to chemical or instrumental analysis has been devised. The alloy is submerged beneath the surface of an inert organic reagent and dissolved at a controlled rate by adding methanol drop-by-drop. A blanket of inert gas is maintained over the reaction flask. The procedure has been successfully used to dissolve samples of NaK in the range of 0.05 to 25 grams."

Progress Report - Project 31: Vapor Phase Chlorination of TO₃

"This work is a continuation of an investigation begun in January, 1945, on a laboratory study of various methods for the chlorination of TO3. The work carried out this month deals entirely with gas phase chlorination, the liquid phase chlorination of TO3 having been turned over to Miss Hubbard. Gas phase chlorination of TO3 by means of CCl4, S2Cl2, SOCl2, SO2Cl2, and Cl2 have been carried out under varying conditions in the several different types of reactors."

The Determination of Uranium by Potentiometric Titration with Ferric Sulfate

Abstract: "A method for the potentiometric titration of uranium with ferric sulfate is described. Theoretical Consideration of the Geometrical Structure of the Uranium Halides

Abstract: The geometrical structure of the uranium halides has been studied from a theoretical viewpoint.
