100 Area Process Water Pressure Decay Test Program: Part 1 (open access)

100 Area Process Water Pressure Decay Test Program: Part 1

The increase in process tube outlet water temperature to 90{degree}C resulted in increased emergency water flow requirements as indicated by recently approved curves which establish minimum crossheader pressure requirements for the first three minutes following an electrical power failure. To determine whether 190 Building secondary process water pump capacities are adequate for current minimum reactor water pressure requirements, process water pump trip-cut tests are being conducted at all reactors by the Process Unit in accordance with recommendations of the Reactor Process Committee. The results obtained to data in these tests, as well as current plans for the remaining tests, are presented in this document.

Resonance Absorption of Thorium (open access)

Resonance Absorption of Thorium

Abstract: Cadmium ratios for very thin (neutron and beta-wise) foils of thorium, gold, vanadium and indium have been measured in the glory hole of the WBNS. These cadmium ratios, together with the known thermal cross sections and a given calculated resonance integral for gold, were used to evaluare the resonance integrals of thorium, vanadium, and indium.

Analysis of several methods of pumping cooling air for turbojet engine afterburners (open access)

Analysis of several methods of pumping cooling air for turbojet engine afterburners

From Introduction: "Afterburning is well established as an effective means of increasing the thrust of a turbojet engine. In order to obtain the maximum thrust from an afterburner, it is necessary to burn to the highest temperatures possible (reference 1). At these high temperatures, material limitations (reference 2) necessitate the installation of cooling systems to permit safe and reliable operation."

The Use of Area Suction for the Purpose of Improving Trailing-Edge Flap Effectiveness on a 35 Degree Sweptback Wing (open access)

The Use of Area Suction for the Purpose of Improving Trailing-Edge Flap Effectiveness on a 35 Degree Sweptback Wing

"An investigation was conducted to determine the effectiveness of suction applied through a porous area at the leading edge of the flap, on a 35 degree sweptback wing. Several chordwise extents and positions of area suction were tested for the suction flap deflected 55 degrees and 70 degrees. The results indicated that large increases in flap lift increment can be made by applying suction with very small flow quantities to an area near the leading edge of a flap" (p. 1).

Prediction of flame velocities of hydrocarbon flames (open access)

Prediction of flame velocities of hydrocarbon flames

The laminar-flame-velocity data previously reported by the Lewis Laboratory are surveyed with respect to the correspondence between experimental flame velocities and values predicted by semitheoretical and empirical methods. The combustible mixture variables covered are hydrocarbon structure (56 hydrocarbons), equivalence ratio of fuel-air mixture, mole fraction of oxygen in the primary oxygen-nitrogen mixture (0.17 to 0.50), and initial mixture temperature (200 degrees to 615 degrees k). The semitheoretical method of prediction considered are based on three approximate theoretical equations for flame velocity: the Semenov equation, the Tanford-Pease equation, and the Manson equation.

Personnel requirements (open access)

Personnel requirements

The hiring schedule was reviewed by the same method that was used in the reference letter with essentially the same results; that is, that we should hire approximately 125 technical graduates during the hiring year 1953-54. In the belief that possibly this method was a bit too crude for this stage of the Plant development, I have applied another one, which I believe is fairly independent of the previous method of calculation since it is directed at a consideration of only people required who have a technical background.
