Typed letter from Lt. Comdr. E. E. Roberts to Mary Magdalene Hawkins, February 1, 1945. Roberts relates that her husband, Herbert B. Hawkins went missing in action during the Battle Off Samar on the U.S.S. Samuel B. Roberts. He mentions that a fourteen-inch shell from a Japanese battleship hit near Herbert’s battle station, his remains were not found and he was not seen abandoning ship.
