Abstract: "Tests have been developed for both the qualitative detection and quantitative determination of fluorine in chlorine. The qualitative test is made by passing the gas through manganous chloride. If the pink solid tubes brown there is greater than 0.5 percent of fluorine in the gas. The quantitative test is a modification of the Steiger and Marvin Test with oxidized titanium solution."

Radium-Barium Separation Process: Part 2 - Chromate Fractionation Procedures

Abstract: A comprehensive study was made of various fractionation systems for the fractional separation of barium-radium mixtures. The most efficient and simplest fractionation scheme was chosen on the basis of the thermodynamics of separating the constituents of mixed crystals and of the combining fractions in a system of repeating composition. This scheme was applied to the separation of barium and radium by utilizing the countercurrent batch fractionation of the chromates. The chromate procedure was evaluated by a comparison with the classic methods which employ the fractional crystallization of the halides. The chromate method is more practical on the basis of radium enrichment per fractionation step, control of precipitating conditions, simplicity, and speed of operation.

Physical Constants of Uranium Tetrachloride

Abstract: Exceedingly pure uranium tetrachloride was prepared for use in determining the physical constants of the compound. Measurements were obtained of the melting point and boiling point at pressures ranging from the triple point pressure to atmospheric pressure. Calculations were made of the vapor pressure equation for the liquid, the heat of evaporation, molar boiling point elevation, the vapor pressure equation for the solid, and the critical temperature.

Transition Boiling Heat Transfer Program; Fifth Quarterly Progress Report, January - March 1964

Summary: Tests with the two-rod assembly were performed with liquid film trippers attached to the unheated wall, and a variation in rod spacing. Experimental data and improved high-speed motion pictures have been obtained of transition boiling behavior. The changes of the local heat transfer process between nucleate and film boiling can be readily distinguished i the motion pictures. Observational test performed with very short fins on the heated surface resulted in essentially eliminating transition boiling temperature fluctuations and doubling the film boiling coefficient. These gains were attained without reduction of the critical heat flux

An Evaluation of Buried Waste Line Design Practice Interim Report No. 2: Underground Pipeline and Structure Corrosion Study Program

This report has been prepared to review the status of design for buried waste line and presents the major factors involved in support of the conclusions. This report is the second in a series reporting on the general subject of underground corrosion. The first on cathodic protection of waste lines noted the technology of stainless steel and its effect on existing waste line and recommended continued use of the cathodic protection. Experience with buried stainless pipe had shown that, unless protected, such installations are subject to severe pit corrosion. As designs developed the use of encasements has become a standardized approach. This discussion will evaluate this trend.

Startup and testing of the PRTR has been divided into three parts, Design Tests, Critical Tests and Power Tests. This document is the third of the series and describes the performance tests which will be made under nuclear power and the general schedule of operation. Responsibility for the startup of the reactor has been assigned to the PRTR Startup Council. The Power Test Sub-Council, which has done the planning of the initial power operation, was established by the Startup Council. Operation of the reactor will be the responsibility of the PRTR Operation (PRTRO).

Development Program for Increased Output in the Garigliano Nuclear Reactor. Quarterly Report No. 2

The United States and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), on May 29, and June 18, 1958, signed an agreement which provides a basis for co-operation in programs for the advancement of the peaceful applications of atomic energy. The work described in this report represents the Joint U.S.-Euratom effort. The over-all development program is designed to obtain the test data and operating experience necessary to eventually realize a 50 percent increase in the output of the Garigliano Nuclear Power Station located at Sessa Aurunca (Campania, Italy). Two tasks are in progress: Task III-F involves the preparation of test specimens of reactor vessel material for irradiation; Task IV consists of the formulation of specification for a complete data logging and computer system.

A Survey of the Effects of Neutron Irradiation on the Impact and Other Mechanical Properties of Pressure Vessel Steels for the SM-2 Reactor

Abstract: This technical report summarizes the data obtained in a recent literature survey conducted to determine the effects of neutron irradiation on the impact and other mechanical properties of both ferritic steels and austenitic stainless steels. The survey was primarily aimed at obtaining sufficient data on the behavior of pressure vessel steels at high integrated neutron flux levels in order that a reference material of construction could be selected for the SM-2 (APPR-1B) reactor vessel. Materials studied in this literature survey included carbon and low alloy steels such as: ASTM A-212B, ASTM A-201, ASTM A-301B (CR-Mo), ASTM A-106 (coarse and fine grained), ASTM A-285, ASTM A-302B (Mn-Mo), ASTM A-353, ASTM A-203 Grade D, E-7016 carbon steel weld metal, USS Carilloy T-1, HY-65 and HY-80. In addition, Types 304 and 347 stainless steels were also investigated as representative austenitic materials which might be used in pressure vessel construction. A careful evaluation was made of the irradiation induced changes in the mechanical properties of the above materials. The ferritic steels were evaluated primarily on the basis of increases in transition temperature due to irradiation and decreases in the amount of maximum energy absorbed prior to ductile failure. Measurement Of Average Neutron Energies For (o, n) Neutron Sources

A method is presented for measuring the average energy of the neutrons from a source. The attenuation of the neutrons by polyethylene is measured by the use of a long counter in good geometry. The attenuation length is a sensitive function of the neutron energy. The average neutron energies from several (o, n) sources have been measured and agree well with values obtained by other techniques.
