In this document it is proposed to describe the plant site and to outline the nature of the pile in order to show the specific design and layout requirements for the production of plutonium by nuclear synthesis. The selection of the plant site involved a number of special considerations. An essential requirement was a large dependable supply of relatively pure water that remains at a fairly low temperature throughout the year. A large source of power was required to circulate the tremendous quantities of water. The potential dangers connected with the high energies of the nuclear reaction and the formation of a large quantity of radioactive by- products required large distances between each operating section of the plant, and between the plant and main rail and highway routes. The plant site layout and reactor areas are discussed in the first part of the chapter, followed by a functional description of the more essential pile components. The chapter concludes with a discussion of reactor instrumentation. 24 figs., 2 tabs.

Precipitation of plutonium(IV) oxalate in Task I (open access)

Precipitation of plutonium(IV) oxalate in Task I

Laboratory experience on the precipitation of Pu(IV) oxalate is summarized. Filterable Pu(IV) oxalate with a cake density of 0.6 to 0.7 g Pu/cm/sup 3/ cake was precipitated from Redox PR solutions containing 10 to 200 g/l Pu and 2 to 6 M HNO/sub 3/. Filtration ease increased with strike temperature from 35 to 60/sup 0/C. Optimum conditions for pre-reduction of Pu(VI) to (IV), precipitation, digestion, filtration and washing were determined for 60 g/l Pu. Separation factors of 80, 40, 20, and 12 for Al, Cr, Fe, and U and decontamination factors of 1.2, 12, and 3 for Am, Ru, and Zr--Nb were obtained.

H. W. Laboratory manual: 100 Area section (open access)

H. W. Laboratory manual: 100 Area section

The purpose of this manual is to present a Hazard Breakdown of all jobs normally encountered in the laboratory work of the three sections comprising the Analytic Section, Metallurgy and Control Division of the Technical Department. A Hazard Breakdown is a careful analysis of any job in which the source of possible dangers is clearly indicated for each particular step. The analysis is prepared by individuals who are thoroughly familiar with the specific job or procedure. It is felt that if the hazards herein outlined are recognized by the Laboratory personnel and the suggested safety cautions followed, the chance for injury will be minimized and the worker will become generally more safety conscious. The manual, which is prefaced by the general safety rules applying to all the laboratories, is divided into three main sections, one for each of the three sections into which the Laboratories Division is divided. These sections are as follows: Section 1 -- 200 Area Control; Section 2 -- 100 Area Control; Section 3 -- 300 Area Control, Essential Materials, and Methods Improvement.

Design and construction history, Aquatic Biology Laboratory: Project C-364, December 31, 1951 (open access)

Design and construction history, Aquatic Biology Laboratory: Project C-364, December 31, 1951

The GE Nucleonics Division Staff Department which now is called the Radiological Sciences Department was formerly known as the ``Health Instrument Divisions. A part of this department, presently known as the Biology Section, was formerly identified as the ``Biology Division.`` This project is concerned with a laboratory facility which is being built for the use of the Aquatic Biology Unit of the Biology Section. The Aquatic Biology group was established in 1945 to study the effect of the pile effluent on the Columbia River salmon industry. A hutment was erected to provide space for a laboratory, fish troughs, equipment, offices, and service. Thirteen outside ponds were built. Although minor improvements were subsequently added to the original facility, the expansion of the plant did not keep pace with the expansion in the operating program. This inadequacy gave rise to the project hereafter described.

Inspections performed by Du Pont on the telescope actuator system: Part 4 (open access)

Inspections performed by Du Pont on the telescope actuator system: Part 4

Five telescope actuator systems designated as ``R``, ``P``, ``L``, ``K`` and ``C`` were fabricated at New York Ship. All five were similar in specifications except for minor detail. For overall assembly refer to du Pont arrangement drawings W-153422, W-153423, and W-153424. These drawings illustrate ``R`` unit; however, they are representative of all units. They show a complete listing of material required and an overall view of the telescoping assembly. Since jigs and special tooling were set up to conform to a definite deck plate fabrication sequence, the inspection procedures and methods described in this book will follow logically the fabrication steps.

Travel to Battelle Memorial Institute to discuss the progress of subcontract research on the natural uranium and enriched uranium fuel element programs. Trip report, June 21--22 and 27, 1955

The poor corrosion resistance of recent samples press-clad with 6,000 psi at 950 F is believed to have been due to the presence of a large number of stringers intersecting the surfaces of the uranium cores. A better quality metal and an improved pinch-weld will be used in the future. Machining of extrusion dies and mandrel tips by Moczik for the BMI extrusion cladding work is expected to be completed about mid-July. The first attempt to clad the internal surface of a tube by ``hot drawing`` has been completed. A plug was drawn through an aluminum billet placed in the tube and heated to 955 F. A weakly bonded cladding with a poor surface was produced. Several uranium-aluminum billets have been cast into a water-cooled steel mold as a means of varying the cooling rate of the alloy. Billets previously cast into a graphite mold are being examined by radiography in order to determine the effects of the rate of solidification on the segregation of the alloy.

Experimental Study of Plasmoids (open access)

Experimental Study of Plasmoids

A plasma source can be used to project ionized matter across a magnetic field. The configuration of plasma observed when an electromagnetic braking action is produced by the presence of low pressure gas (- Pp) in the vacuum chamber pr0vide.s an insight into the manner in which magnetic-fieldlines can be dragged and twisted. . By firing several sources simultaneiously, it is possible to,simulate in geometrical form the production of spiral galaxies and barred spirals.

Battelle Memorial Institute trip report, November 1953

The hot pressing die successfully bonded a composite of Ni plate U and Al. A die for step processing is being fabricated. Cu and Mg additions to the AlSi bath lower the dipping temperature but increase intermetallic formation with ductility loss. Optimum dipping rate for continuous AlSi coatings has been established. Extrusion of Al over a cylindrical core was successful. 7.5% Zr-U is not sensitive to oxygen content under crevice corrosion in boiling demineralized water. A method was developed for monitoring the progressive deterioration of bond layer in boiling water by resistivity data; results confirm that the Cu bond is not as corrosion resistant as Ni or AlSi. Two nondestructive methods were developed for thickness of electroplated Ni on U.

Paracantor: A Two Group, Two Region Reactor Code

Paracantor I a two energy group, two region, time independent reactor code, which obtains a closed solution for a critical reactor assembly. The code deals with cylindrical reactors of finite length and with a radial reflector of finite thickness. It is programmed for the 1.B.M: Magnetic Drum Data-Processing Machine, Type 650. The limited memory space available does not permit a flux solution to be included in the basic Paracantor code. A supplementary code, Paracantor 11, has been programmed which computes fluxes, .including adjoint fluxes, from the .output of Paracamtor I.
