The Corrosion of Monel and 70-30 Cupronickel in Hydrofluoric Acid (open access)

The Corrosion of Monel and 70-30 Cupronickel in Hydrofluoric Acid

Monel is shown to be suitable for the handling of 1O to 70% HF at 14O deg F and for handling 38 and 48% acid at boiling; cupronickel also is useful over part of this range. Elimination of O/sub 2/ is necessary to achieve maximum corrosion resistance. Some accelerated interface attack was noted for 70-30 cupronickel. Welding of Monel is the preferable joining method. Silver solder joints are subject to embrittlement. Work hardening, annealing, and external stress do not significantly influence the corrosion of Monel. Galvanic coupling of Monel with silver or silver solder is to be avoided. (auth)

Design and Performance Characteristics of Magnetic Jack-Type Control Rod Drive (open access)

Design and Performance Characteristics of Magnetic Jack-Type Control Rod Drive

The magnetic jack is a hermetically sealed, step-motion linear motor which saiisfies the need for a reliable, lowcost, nuclear reactor conirol rod drive. It is especially applicable for operation under adverse conditions peculiar to pressurized water-cooled reactors. The jack consists of a pressure shell, four sets of external magnet coils, and one internal moving part ivhich imparts linear motion to rod extensions of the control rod. The desired motion is achieved by energizing and de-energizing the various coils in a given sequence. An electromagnetic position indicator registers the position of the drive rods, thereby loeating the position of the control rod in the reactor core. Two magmetic jacks were operated under simulated boiling water reactor operating conditions for 3150 hours (18,300 ft total rod travel, 2210 scrams) and 13 0 hours (7,700 ft total rod travel, 1000 scrams), respeetively. There were no mechanical malfunctions and no significant wear was observed on the components. The position of the rod was indicated to an accuracy of 0.05 in. Complementary information includes detailed formulas and work sheets for calculating magnetic circuits and component drawings for two alternate magnetic jack designs. (auth)

THE DETERMINATION OF FISSION PRODUCT RUTHENIUM (open access)

THE DETERMINATION OF FISSION PRODUCT RUTHENIUM

Improvements in Glendenin's procedure for the determimation of fission product ruthenium have been made. The distillation from perchloric acid has been replaced by ABSTRACTS a more rapid distillation from a dilute suifuric acid- sodium bismuthate mixture. Conditions for the quantitative volatilization and collection of the tetroxide, as well as reduction to the dioxide, have been established. Reduction to the metal for a yield determimation is no longer necessary. The analysis time has been halved and the precision has been improved by a factor of three. (auth)

Development of Ultrasonic Techniques for Inspecting Experimental Boiling Water Reactor Cast Uranium Alloy Cores and Fuel Plates (open access)

Development of Ultrasonic Techniques for Inspecting Experimental Boiling Water Reactor Cast Uranium Alloy Cores and Fuel Plates

An ultrasonic test technique was developed for the inspection of fuel plates, uranium alloy cores, amd fuel plates in subassemblies for the Experimental Boiling Water Reactor (EBWR). For these tests a special scanner was designed and fabricated. The equipment could serve as a research tool as well as being used for inspecting numerous items of diversified lengths and shapes. A transmission technique was used at am ultrasonic frequency of 5 megacycles. The mechanical motion of the inspecting transducers was synchronized to a helix recorder so as to provide a permanent two-dimensional recording on electrosensitive paper. It was possible to detect piping, shrink, porosity, inclusions and microinclusions in the uranium alloy castings. In the completed fuel plates, a nonbond area of 1/8 of an ineh in diameter could be located. With the construction of a special two-arm probe, fuel plates installed in subassemblies were successfully tested by a transmission technique. (auth)

EDDY CURRENT DETECTION OF Al-Si PENETRATIONS IN CANNED SLUGS (open access)

EDDY CURRENT DETECTION OF Al-Si PENETRATIONS IN CANNED SLUGS

An instrument for detecting Al-Si alloy penetrations in the Al jacket of fuel slugs is described. The instrument is of the eddy current type, and the sensing element is a small probe that does not touch the specimen under inspection. Al-Si inclusions 0.020 in. in diameter that penetrate to within 0.005 in. of the can surface can be detected. The response of the circuits is such that a slug 8 in. long can be scanned in 45 sec. The Kinetics of the Complexing of Ferric Ion by Thiocyanate and Chloride Ions (open access)

The Kinetics of the Complexing of Ferric Ion by Thiocyanate and Chloride Ions

An apparatus for rapidly mixing two solutions and recording the light absorption, which was developed by Connick and Below, has been modified. The mixing characteristics were studied and models were developed in an attempt to umder stand the observed mixing phenomena. The apparatus was applied to a study of the kinetics of the reactions Fe/sup +++/ + SCN/sup -/ = FeSCN/sup ++/ and Fe/ sup +++/ Cl/sup -/ = FeCl/sup ++/ in aqueous solution, with both reactions having the forward rate law STAd(FeX/sup ++/)/dt = k/sub 1/ (Fe/sup +++/) (X/sup -/) + k/ sub 2/ (Fe/sup +++/)(X/sup -/)/(H/sup +)!, where X/sup -/ represents either SC N/ sup -/ or Cl/sup -/. The rate constants k/sub 1/ and k/sub 2/ have been measured as a function of temperature, and the heats and entropies of activation have been calculated. Mechanisms for the observed rate law have been discussed and the entropies of activation were compared with those for analogous reaction rates and with some equilibrium entropies of complexing. A rate for chloride complexing of ferric ion was obtained from nuclear magnetic resonance studies and compared with the results of the spectrophotometric kinetic study. (auth)

A Laboratory Investigation of the Fluorination of Crude Uranium Tetrafluoride (open access)

A Laboratory Investigation of the Fluorination of Crude Uranium Tetrafluoride

Ore concentrates were converted directly to crude uranium tetrafluoride by hydrogen reduction aad hydrofluorination in fluidized-bed reactors. Small- scale laboratory experiments demonstrated that this process can be extended to the production of crude uranium hexafluoride through fluorination of the uranium tetrafluoride in a fluidized bed. The satisfactory temperature range for the reaction lies between 300 and 600 deg C. At 450 deg C the fluorine utilization is between 50 and 80%. With excess fluorine, over 99% of the uranium is volatilized from the solid material. The fluidization characteristics of certain materials are improved by the addition of an inert solid diluent to the bed. (auth) .
