Investigation of downwash and wake characteristics at a Mach number of 1.53 1: rectangular wing

The results of an experimental investigation of the downwash and wake characteristics behind a rectangular plan-form wing of aspect ratio 3.5 are presented. The airfoil section was a 5-percent-thick, symmetrical double wedge. The tests were made at a Mach number of 1.53 and a Reynolds number of 1.25 million. A comparison between experimental and theoretical values of the downwash angles is made.

Using high-critical-speed NACA 16-series airfoil sections (reference 1), these propellers are designed to have Betz minimum induced-energy loss loading (reference 2) for a blade angle of 45^o at the 0.7 radius, when used as a four-blade propeller operating at an advance ratio of approximately 2.1 The ultimate purpose of the program is to determine the influence upon propeller design factors and of compressiblity; the propeller tests reported herein form part of the investigation of the effects of blade-section thickness ratio."

Preliminary investigation of the delay of turbulent flow separation by means of wedge-shaped bodies

Report presenting an experimental investigation of pyramidal, wedge-like bodies as devices for delaying separation of a turbulent boundary layer. Within certain limits, effective boundary-layer control was obtainable with wedges of different geometry, but the drag of the wedges was high, making it desirable to keep their size to a minimum. Greater maximum lift was obtainable by placing the wedges well forward along the chord and by allowing open spaces between adjacent wedges.

Investigation of Operating Pressure Ratio of a Supersonic Wind Tunnel Utilizing Distributed Boundary-Layer Suction in Test Section

Effect of distributed boundary-layer suction on operating pressure ratio of a supersonic wind tunnel was investigated. Investigation was made in 3.84- by 10-inch supersonic tunnel operating at Mach number 2.0 and suction was applied in neighborhood of the normal shock to two walls of a constant-area extension of test section. A reduction of 4 percent of operating pressure ratio was attributed to improved flow conditions at subsonic-diffuser inlet. The theoretical normal shock was, in practice, replaced by a multiple-branch shock configuration across which the flow parameters changed in approximate accordance with the Rankine-Hugoniot values.

Report presenting the results of an experimental wind-tunnel investigation of the damping in pitch of two triangular wings having leading edges swept back 45 degrees are presented. The wings differed only in airfoil section. Results regarding the damping coefficients, aeroelastic effects at supersonic speeds, Reynolds number effects, and application of the results to the prediction of the dynamic behavior of full-scale aircraft are provided.

From Summary: "A preliminary investigation was conducted to determine the altitude performance of pentaborane and a blend fuel of 64.2 percent pentaborane in JP-4 fuel in a tubular combustor of a current production type turbojet engine. Deposits on the liner barrel and dome were virtually nonexistent. The combustion efficiency of 90 to 94 percent for pentaborane and approximately 90 percent for the blend. Outlet temperature profiles were marginal; however, the developed combustor provided lower pressure losses than obtained in conventional combustors."
