"Existing data on the errors involved in the measurement of static pressure by means of static-pressure tubes and fuselage vents are presented. The errors associated with the various design features of static-pressure tubes are discussed for the condition of zero angle of attack and for the case where the tube is included to the flow. Errors due to variations in the configuration of static-pressure vents are also presented" (p. 1).

Exploratory Investigation of Transpiration Cooling of a 40 Degree Double Wedge Using Nitrogen and Helium as Coolants at Stagnation Temperatures of 1,295 to 2,910 Degrees F

Report presenting an investigation of transpiration cooling in a preflight jet model consisting of a double wedge of 40 degrees included angle with a porous stainless-steel specimen inserted flush with the top surface of the wedge. Nitrogen and helium were used as coolants and testing was conducted for flow rates ranging from about 0.03 to 0.30 percent of the local weight flow. The helium coolant required only about one-fourth to one-fifth the coolant flow weight as the nitrogen coolant for the same amount of heat-transfer reduction.

Free-flight investigation of comparative zero-lift rolling effectiveness of a leading edge and a trailing edge air-jet spoiler on an unswept wing

Report presenting a free-flight investigation of the zero-lift rolling effectiveness of air-jet spoilers on an unswept flexible wing over a range of Mach numbers. Testing was made to determine the relative effectiveness of air-jet spoilers at leading-edge and trailing-edge locations. The leading-edge jet spoiler exhibited near-zero effectiveness at transonic speeds and had a roll reversal between Mach numbers 0.93 and 1.35.

Flight Measurements of the Flying Qualities of a Lockheed P-80A Airplane (Army No. 44-85099): Longitudinal-Stability and -Control Characteristics

This report contains the flight-test results of the longitudinal-stability and -control phase of a general flying qualities investigation of the Lockheed P-80A airplane (Army No. 44-85099). The tests were conducted at indicated airspeeds up to 530 miles per hour (0.76 Mach number) at low altitude and up to 350 miles per hour (0.82) Mach number) at high altitude. These tests showed that the flying qualities of the airplane were in accordance with the requirements of the Army Air Forces Stability and Control Specification except for excessive elevator control forces in maneuvering flight and the inadequacy of the longitudinal trimming control at low airspeeds.

Cooling of Gas Turbines 6 - Computed Temperature Distribution Through Cross Section of Water-Cooled Turbine Blade

"A theoretical analysis of the cross-sectional temperature distribution of a water-cooled turbine blade was made using the relaxation method to solve the differential equation derived from the analysis. The analysis was applied to specific turbine blade and the studies icluded investigations of the accuracy of simple methods to determine the temperature distribution along the mean line of the rear part of the blade, of the possible effect of varying the perimetric distribution of the hot gas-to -metal heat transfer coefficient, and of the effect of changing the thermal conductivity of the blade metal for a constant cross sectional area blade with two quarter inch diameter coolant passages" (p. 1).

Dilution of liquid oxygen when nitrogen is used for pressurization

Report presenting a graphic method for determining the composition and phases within a propellant tank when liquid oxygen is pressurized with nitrogen gas and some of the calculations involved. The assumed limiting conditions are that pressurizing gas flows adiabatically from the pressure tank and that equilibrium exists in the oxygen-nitrogen system. The experiment indicates that a series dilution of the oxidant occurs when nitrogen is used as a pressurizing gas, but a barrier at the liquid-gas interface would permit the use of nitrogen.

"An investigation has been conducted in the Langley 20-foot free- spinning tunnel scale model of the Cornelius XFG-1 glider, a tailless design having its wings swept forward 15 degrees. It was previously found to possess erratic spin and recovery characteristics, and tests were made to determine modifications which would lead to normal steady spins with consistently good recoveries. The results of the investigation indicated that modifications that aid not appreciably alter the basic design aid not appreciably improve the spin and recovery characteristics" (p. 1).

Flight Tests of Rocket-Powered "Tin-Can" Models of AAF Project MX-800

Flight tests were made of six noninstrumented rocket-powered "Tin Can" models of AAF Project MX-800. Velocity and drag data were obtained by use of CU Doppler radar. The existence of stability and adequate structural strength for flight near zero lift was checked by visual and photographic observation. Drag data obtained during the tests agreed reasonably well with estimates based on experimental data from NACA RM-2 rocket-powered drag research models.

From Summary: "As part of a study of means of airspeed measurement at transonic speeds the use of static orifices located ahead of the wing tip has been investigated for possible application to service or research airspeed installations. The local static pressure and local Mach number have been measured at a distance of 1 tip chord ahead of the wing tip of a model of a swept-wing fighter airplane at true Mach numbers between 0.7 and 1.08 by the NACA wing-flow method. All measurements were made at or near zero lift. The local Mach number was found to be essentially equal to the true Mach numbers less than about 0.90."

This paper presents the results of the aileron investigation and includes rolling-moment, yawing-moment, and aileron hinge-moment coefficients and pressure coefficients across the aileron-balance seal through a range of angle of attack, tab deflection, and aileron deflection with flaps neutral and deflected 20 degrees and 55 degrees. Some of the effects of wing roughness and balance seal leakage on the aileron and tab characteristics are also presented.

"An investigation of a 1/7-scale powered model of the Kaiser Fleetwing all-wing airplane was made in the Langley full-scale tunnel to provide data for an estimation of the flying qualities of the airplane. The analysis of the stability and control characteristics of the airplane has been made as closely as possible in accordance with the requirements of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department's specifications, and a summary of the more significant conclusions is presented as follows. With the normal center of gravity located at 20 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord, the airplane will have adequate static longitudinal stability, elevator fixed, for all flight conditions except for low-power operation at low speeds where the stability will be about neutral" (p. 1).

Summary of Rocket-Model Tests at Zero Lift of the Northrop MX-775B Missile Configuration from Mach Numbers of 0.9 to 1.8

Flight tests were conducted between Mach numbers of 0.9 and 1.8 over a Reynolds number range of 9(exp 6) to 30(exp 6) to determine the zero-lift drag and some rolling-effectiveness characteristics of the Northrop MX -775B missile with small and large body. The MX-775B is a proposed long range, supersonic, ground-to-ground missile having an arrow wing with 67.5 degree leading-edge sweep, 15 deg trailing-edge sweep, and a modified NACA 0004 airfoil section. The configuration has no horizontal tail but has wing trailing-edge elevons which serve a dual purpose as elevators and ailerons. The ratio of body frontal area to wing plan-form area is 0.0127 for the small-body configuration and 0.0330 for the large-body configuration.

Aerodynamic design of axial-flow compressors: Volume 3

Chapters XI to XIII concern the unsteady compressor operation arising when compressor blade elements stall. The fields of compressor stall and surge are reviewed in Chapters XI and XII, respectively. The part-speed operating problem in high-pressure-ratio multistage axial-flow compressors is analyzed in Chapter XIII. Chapter XIV summarizes design methods and theories that extend beyond the simplified two-dimensional approach used previously in the report. Chapter XV extends this three-dimensional treatment by summarizing the literature on secondary flows and boundary layer effects. Charts for determining the effects of errors in design parameters and experimental measurements on compressor performance are given in Chapters XVI. Chapter XVII reviews existing literature on compressor and turbine matching techniques.
