NURE Aerial Gamma-Ray and Magnetic Reconnaissance Survey of Portions of New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, Final Report: Volume 2-E, Holbrook Quadrangle

The results of a high-sensitivity, aerial gamma-ray spectrometer and magnetometer survey of the Holbrook two degree quadrangle, Arizona are presented. Instrumentation and methods are described in Volume 1 of this final report. The work was done by Carson Helicopters, Inc., and Carson Helicopters was assisted in the interpretation by International Exploration, Inc. The work was performed for the US Department of Energy - National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program. Analysis of this radiometric data yielded 260 statistically significant eU anomalies. Of this number, forty-four were considered to be of sufficient strength to warrant further investigation. These preferred anomalies are separated into groups having some geologic aspect in common.

The Effects of Chemical Impurities on the Quality of Rolled Uranium Rod (open access)

The Effects of Chemical Impurities on the Quality of Rolled Uranium Rod

Abstract: "Thirty-four uranium ingots containing controlled amounts of carbon, nitrogen, and Mgl2 slag were cast, rolled, and examined to investigate the relation between these impurities and the quality of the rolled rod. Carbon in concentrations up to 1400 ppm and nitrogen up to 170 ppm, either singly or in combination, had no significant effect on the number of defects observed in the rolled rod. The quality of the rods, however decreased with increasing amount of slag necessary to cause observable differences in the rod could not be detected on analysis, but was visible in the microstructure."

Design and Feasibility Study of a Pebble Bed Reactor-Steam Power Plant

Originally issued as S and P 1963A, Parts I and II. This report covers a design and feasibility study of a pebble bed reactor-steam power plant of 125 megawatt electrical output. The reactor design which evolved from this study is a two-region thermal breeder, operating on the uranium-thorium cycle, in which all core structural materials are graphite. Fuel is in the form of unclad spherical elements of graphite, containing fissile and fertile material. The primary loop consists of the reactor plus three steam generators and blowers in parallel. Plant design and system analysis including cost analysis and capital cost summary are given.

Measurement of the Behavior of a Plasma in a Magnetic Field by Means of Probes (open access)

Measurement of the Behavior of a Plasma in a Magnetic Field by Means of Probes

Abstract: "Probes were used to measure certain properties of the cloud of positive ions and electrons ejected from a pulsed ion source having two hydrogen-loaded electrodes. Time-of-flight measurements show: the presence of H+ ions with 50 ev directed energy; an increase of this energy with increasing pulse current in the source; a higher peak yield of ions with higher peak currents in the source; and higher yields and higher ion energies up to 110 ev have been recorded with the use of a pulsed magnetic field impressed upon the source. The neutral positive ion-electron beam from the source has been projected against an increasing magnetic field and the reflected and transmitted signals have been recorded and compared as a function of the magnetic field. Probe signals from the plasma as it encounters the magnetic field are oscillatory, suggesting that magnetohydrodynamic phenomena are presented."

The Elimination of Microwave Reflections (open access)

The Elimination of Microwave Reflections

Abstract: "The reflections of microwaves from the walls of a plasma-containing vessel are studied. The probable cause of the reflections is discussed, and several suggestions are made for eliminating the reflections from the waveguide in the vessel and particularly from the pyrex vessel wall and copper tubing surrounding the pyrex. Quarter-wave-thick carbon-filled plastics or glasses having a very low vapor pressure room most promising when placed inside the pyrex cylinder. BaTiO3 appears to be an excellent material when placed outside the vacuum."

Investigation of Uranium Deposits, Anderson Mine and Adjacent Properties, Yavapai County, Arizona

From abstract: A team consisting of R. A. Lindblom, S. A. Mayer, R. G. Young, W. L. Chenoweth, R. F. Droullard, and I. T. Fisk made a reexamination of the Anderson mine (Uranium Aire) of Interstate Oil and Development located near Wickenberg in Yavapai County, Arizona. The field examination was made from August 22, 1958 to September 2, 1958. This team was formed to resolve differences between company and AEC ore reserve estimates. A cooperative effort in which the company supplied labor, limited additional drilling and both parties were in attendance during the sampling resulted in the collection of additional data. Special attention was given to assessing the in-hole assaying with radiometric equipment by IOD and AEC, evaluation of tonnage factors, moisture content, continuity of ore, and current mapping of stripped and mined areas.

Uranium in Peru (open access)

Uranium in Peru

Introduction: From the inception of the effort to utilize atomic energy PerĂº has been of interest as a possible source of radioactive raw materials because of its great variety and abundance of metals. Because of this and a desire at that time to develop additional supplies of uranium, a cooperative program to search for uranium deposits was initiated in 1953 by the Junta and the USAEC.
