THERMOCOUPLE LIQUID LEVEL INDICATOR USED ON COLD TRAP STANDS

Thermocouple liquid level indicators for use in detecting and controlling NaK levels in surge tanks were built and tested. While the indicators were not tested against another type of level measuring device, they performed satisfactorily and demonstrated the feasibility of pressure differential manual control. (J.R.D.)

U$sup 233$ BREEDERS--COMMENTARY AND GENERAL REMARKS (open access)

U$sup 233$ BREEDERS--COMMENTARY AND GENERAL REMARKS

Breeding is expected to become a necessity in about 40 years and in view of the 20 years development timoe and 30 years service life of breeder reactors, development of such reactors at present is timely. In plutonium breeders, the specific power is inherentiy lew and the doubling timoe long. This seems to prevent such breeders from furnishing a large fraction oi the energy demands of the expanding economy from uranium recoverable at or about present cost. U/sup 233/ breeders can be designed to the requirements of low inventory and short doubling time, but the aqueous homogeneous reactor seemos to be the only type which can adequately meet these requirements. METALLURGY DIVISION QUARTERLY REPORT FOR JULY, AUGUST, AND SEPTEMBER 1957 (open access)

METALLURGY DIVISION QUARTERLY REPORT FOR JULY, AUGUST, AND SEPTEMBER 1957

Advanced Water Reactor Program. Three firings were made of initial closed-porosity fuel pellet bodies. Each firing coatained pellets of the composition 90 wt.% ThO/sub 2/-10 wt.%fl U0/sub 2/ with various additives and firing variables. Fast Power Breeder Reactor Program. To determine the potential usefulness of a Zr-5 wt. % Pu alloy, the fabricability of the alloy was tested. The manufacture of rod stock from which fuel and blanket elements for the Mark III loading of the EBR-1 were prcduced has been completed. The effect of irradiation on extruded and heat-treated U-2 wt.% Zr alloy for the EBR- 1 is reported. Fabrication procedures for making graphite-U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ test specimens for the TREAT Reactor were investigated. Advanced Engineering and Development. Ultrasonic bond tests were conducted on 590 EBR-1 Mark III blanket fuel elemeats. The blanket rods and part of the fuel rcds for the EBR-1 Mark III loading are being checked for cladding thickness by an eddy current system. Investigations of corrosionresistant Zr-Nb alloy were coatinued. Corrosion of MR alloys is being studied Ln support of the Mighty Mouse reactor program. Dynamic corrosion tests were performed on aluminum alloys, and results are included. Prcduction, Treatment, and Properties of Materials. The progress …

Spallation-Fission Competition in Neptunium Compound Systems. Decay-Scheme Studies (open access)

Spallation-Fission Competition in Neptunium Compound Systems. Decay-Scheme Studies

The results of a radiochemical study of fission and spallation products induced in U/sup 234/, U/sup 235/, and U/sup 236 and spallation products induced in U/sup 238/ by deuterons of less than 24 Mev are presented. The (d,n) reactions are interpreted as the result of direct interactions between the deuteron and the target nuclei, while the (d,n) reactions are thought to be taking place primarily by compound-nucleus mechanisms. A method for predicting the peak values of the cross section for (d,xn) and ( alpha ,xn) reactions on uranium and plutonium isotopes is given for x = 2, 3, or 4. The peak-to-valley ratios of the fission-yield curves for U/sup 234, U/sup 235/, U/sup 236/, and U/ sup 238/ bombarded with deuterons of energies of about 23 Mev were studied, and no significant differences were found. Excitation functions for the (d, gamma ) reactions of U/sup 234/, U/sup 236/, and U/sup 238/ rise to a maximum of about a millibarn at a bombarding energy between 15 and 20 Mev. The results of these measurements are seen to be consistent with the excitation functions for (p, gamma ) and ( alpha , gamma ) reactions. The 60minute neptunium activity which had previously …

THE EFFECT OF TRANSIENTS AND LONGER TIME ANNEALS ON IRRADIATED URANIUM- ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS (open access)

THE EFFECT OF TRANSIENTS AND LONGER TIME ANNEALS ON IRRADIATED URANIUM- ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS

Small pieces of Zircaloy-clad 7 and 8 wt. % uranium-zirconium alloys irradiated from 0.4 to 1.5 at. % burnup of the total core atoms in the MTR were heat-treated at temperatures between 510 and 980 C for periods of time from 1 sec to 500 hr. The resulting changes in density, electrical resistiviiy, and microstructure were observed. Tbe core volume changes were found to be a function both of temperature and time at temperature for a given burnup. A decrease in the swelling rate with time was observed. Thus, at 620 C about 40% of the core volume change after 300 hr (37%) occurred in the first 6 hr. At lower temperatures, more time was required for an equivalent fractional volume change. Metallographic changes and gas bubble formation at phase boundaries were observed optically at temperatures as low as 510 C in high burnup material. Bubbles were also observed in the electron microscope. The changes observed appear to be due to the growth of inert gas bubbles formed in the epsilon phase of uranium-zirconium alloy and to a transformation occurring in the delta phase. The effect of irradiation temperature and flux on the nucleation and growth of the gas bubbles …
