Evaluation of the effectiveness of the M-Area extraction system September 1985 to October 1986 (open access)

Evaluation of the effectiveness of the M-Area extraction system September 1985 to October 1986

A groundwater extraction system designed to remove volatile organic compounds from groundwater has been in operation in the M-Area at the Savannah river Plant since September 1985. This extraction system has been operated at a rate of approximately 410 gallons per minute during the past year, and about 55,000 lbs of volatile organic compounds have been removed from groundwater during the first year of operation. The Raw Materials Engineering and Technology Department at the Savannah River Plant is currently evaluating the operation of the extraction system. In support of the effort, S. S. Papadopulos and Associates, Inc. was requested to: (1) evaluate the performance of the extraction system in terms of its capability to prevent migration of volatile organic chemicals from the M-Area; (2) evaluate the length of time required to remove groundwater from the capture zones of the extraction wells; (3) evaluate long-term effects of the extraction system; and (4) evaluate alternative extraction strategies. The performance of the groundwater extraction system was evaluated by calculating where the groundwater that is pumped from the extraction system enters the groundwater table as recharge, and by calculating the flow paths and travel times for this groundwater from the recharge area to the …

Design data needs modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor. Revision 2 (open access)

Design data needs modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor. Revision 2

The Design Data Needs (DDNs) provide summary statements for program management, of the designer`s need for experimental data to confirm or validate assumptions made in the design. These assumptions were developed using the Integrated Approach and are tabulated in the Functional Analysis Report. These assumptions were also necessary in the analyses or trade studies (A/TS) to develop selections of hardware design or design requirements. Each DDN includes statements providing traceability to the function and the associated assumption that requires the need.

Characterization of crushed tuff for the evaluation of the fate of tracers in transport studies in the unsaturated zone (open access)

Characterization of crushed tuff for the evaluation of the fate of tracers in transport studies in the unsaturated zone

Results of field-scale (caisson) transport studies under unsaturated moisture and steady and nonsteady flow conditions indicate variability and a lack of conservation of mass in solute transport. The tuff materials used in that study were analyzed for the presence of tracers and of freshly precipitated material to help explain the variability and lack of conservation of mass. Selected tuff samples were characterized by neutron activation analysis for tracer identification, by x-ray diffraction for mineral identification, by petrographic analysis for identification of freshly precipitated material, and by x-ray fluorescence analysis for identification of major and trace elements. The results of these analyses indicate no obvious presence of freshly precipitated material that would retard tracer movement. The presence of the nonsorbing tracers (bromide and iodide) suggest the retention of these tracers in immobile water. The presence of the nonsorbing tracers (bromide and iodide) suggest the retention of these tracers in immobile water. The presence of sorbing and nonsorbing tracers on the tuff at some locations (even cesium at the 415-cm depth) and not at others suggests variability in transport. 15 refs., 14 figs., 9 tabs.

Effect of the Operation of Kerr and Hungry Horse Dams on the Reproduction Success of Kokanee in the Flathead River System, 1986 Annual Progress Report. (open access)

Effect of the Operation of Kerr and Hungry Horse Dams on the Reproduction Success of Kokanee in the Flathead River System, 1986 Annual Progress Report.

The 1985 kokanee spawning run in the Flathead system was the strongest in five years. Escapement to the Flathead River system was 147,000 fish, including 123,000 in McDonald Creek and an estimated 20,000 in the main stem. Enumeration of spawners and redds in the Flathead River was hindered by high fall flows and early freezing in November. The upstream spawning migration from Flathead Lake began in late August. Schools of kokanee were seen six miles above the lake on September 4. We counted 1,156 redds in Flathead Lake, distributed primarily along the southeastern shore. An unusually high proportion (90 percent) of lakeshore spawning occurred in the zone above minimum pool, where egg mortality is very high because of exposure from drawdown. Escapement to the Swan River was 1,350 fish. Four year old (III+) fish comprised 95 percent of the spawning run in the Flathead system. This continues a five-year trend toward dominance of the III+ year class. The age composition of spawners has varied considerably for the past 15 years. The average size of spawning fish was 365 mm, which is identical to the average size of the parent year class in 1981. One of the goals of managing Flathead …

Perturbation Effects in the CEBAF Beam Transport System (open access)

Perturbation Effects in the CEBAF Beam Transport System

The CEBAF accelerator design is a recirculating, superconducting, cw, electron linac producing beams with energies of 0.5 to 4.0 GeV.The lattice design of this machine is described elsewhere [1].Here, we will discuss the machine chromatic correction scheme and the anticipated machine performance in the presence of synchrotron radiation excitation, optical perturbations such as misalignments, mispowerings, and magnet inhomogeneities, and errors in the extraction process.

RF Steering in the CEBAF CW Superconducting Linac (open access)

RF Steering in the CEBAF CW Superconducting Linac

There exists a transverse gradient of the electric field parallel to the beam axis in the fundamental rf power coupler for the superconducting, five-cell cavity to be used in the CEBAF 0.5-4.0 GeV, cw, electron accelerator. This electric field gradient results in a transverse deflection of the electrons the magnitude of which varies during the passage of a microbunch, causing a dilution of the transverse emittance. This paper describes the estimate of the transverse deflection and the simulations performed to evaluate the magnitude of the emittance dilution caused by this deflection. The results of these simulations and the method used to reduce this effect are discussed.
