The Traditional History of the Origin of the Clans by Rengshing Dilbung and Angam Shankhil, Hyderabad Youth

A conversation about directional words and various other constructions in Lamkang at IIIT-Hyderabad.

In preparation for a syllable tapping experiment and to improve understanding and readability of verbs with prefixes, participants Angam Shankhil, Steney Leivon Lamkang, and Suungnem Bungshen read over the syllable tapping prompt transcript. The writing system was new to them, especially the way prefixes are written. The three participants discussed how to read the words.

Story of Arthluuk & Raangchel as told by Shangchrek Tholung

The story of Raapa as told by Bunghon Suungnem. A tiger, angry at being duped by Koreng, eats him. Koreng's sisters vow to marry whoever kills the tiger, and the only one able to do it is Raapa. Jealous, the other men conspire to kill Raapa, but he survives two attempts and tricks them so that they drown. In the end Koreng's sisters kill Raapa.

A young woman named Margret Jangvei is seen weaving who demonstrates the traditional weaving using the family loom. Swamy Ksen and Sumshot Khular provide Lamkang words for parts of the loom and its parts. Also present is David Peterson.

Swamy Tholung Ksen describes to with Shobhana Chelliah, Sumshot Khular, and David Peterson how traditional bamboo and cane trays, known as Dap, are made. This was taken in Thamlapokpi village, in Chandel district of Manipur.

The story of Raapa [Raapa paomin] told by Shetphong Sankhil. Raapa Paomin is a story which explains the use and creation of a particular ornament by the Lamkang. It is because of the character Raapa that the Lamkang have those ornaments today.

Here we are setting up the microphone and getting the speaker, Shangchrek Tholung (married to Jangvei), comfortable. She converses with Sumshot Khular who is off camera and is giving her instructions on what to say. The recording was done in Swamy Ksen's house in Thamlapokpi with David Peterson and Shobhana Chelliah in attendance.
