Four co-chairs of The Border Organization (Organización Fronteriza) --a Del Rio-based group devoted to community organizing-- share their story about the group's mission and strategies. The interviewees talked about how they joined -- Sandra Fuentes and Elvira Castro are veterans from the organization and have been involved in numerous fights for local government accountability, while JoElda Hinojosa and Beatriz Arizpe joined recently when the group helped organize food service workers from the San Felipe Del Rio school district. Among the issues discussed were geographic disparities in the quality of public services and how race and gender affect local activism in Del Rio.

Mr. De Hoyas talks about coaching football in Del Rio. He discusses consolidation in 1971. He also talked about growing up in the San Felipe barrio and working in the district.

Chris Escobar is an artist activist who does outreach at La Casa de la Cultura in Del Rio. In the interview, he speaks about migrant work, his father as a vaquero, going on the migrant trail, etc. He also speaks about college and the difficulties of being poor and its attendant effects on his studies at St Edwards & UTEP. He talks a little bit about Austin & learning from Raúl Valdez.

Eulalio "Lalo" Calderon speaks about his early years in San Felipe schools and the community coming together to build some of the structures within the school district. Calderon speaks to the reasons why San Felipe lost out on the kids from Laughlin AFB. The federal government provided additional funds, per student, for every base kid that attended a particular school. Calderon speaks of how San Felipe superintendent, J.B. Pena, signed an agreement with Del Rio superintendent that allowed the base kids to go to the Del Rio school district.

Diana Salgado grew up in the Barrio Chihuahua area of Del Rio in the 1940s. She recalled the discrimination in public spaces in the city (movie theaters, soda fountains…) and how the operators of these places would sometimes try to give her preferential treatment over other Mexican Americans due to her fair skin. Salgado married and dropped out of school shortly before her expected graduation; after spending some years in Arizona, her husband and her moved to San Jose, California, where she found a job in a fruit cannery. In her years working at the cannery, Salgado and her family witnessed the height of the farm workers' movement, and joined the boycotts (her husband was a union member). During her time at the cannery, she also realized the discriminatory practices against line workers and other unsavory actions by the management. She later quit the cannery and became a licensed realtor; after retiring, her family moved back to Texas, eventually resettling in Del Rio. She became involved with local politics through the Democratic Party; she was the chair of the Val Verde Co. committee and ran for several local posts. Mr. Polanco is a former San Felipe student and former football coach with Del Rio High. He talks a little bit about his youth, some about his experiences at Texas A&I, and mostly about the school district consolidation. Some experiences about discrimination. One interesting fact about many of the Del Rio interviews--each of them seem to remember the segregated San Felipe District with special fondness despite, or perhaps, because of the segregation.

Lupe Sotelo is a Del Rio native and a former student of the San Felipe ISD. He also taught at San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District schools after consolidation, and went on to work as principal and superintendent in other communities in Texas. Mr. Sotelo talked about the encouragement of teachers at San Felipe and how he could have been considered an "at risk" student in his youth. The second half of the interview features Sotelo's interpretation of the events surrounding the consolidation of the school districts with the hindsight of having worked as an administrator later in his career.

Even though Eloy Padilla lived in a neighborhood under the jurisdiction of Del Rio ISD, he and his brother transferred voluntarily to San Felipe, which they considered to have a more welcoming environment. He recalled being passed over for opportunities in Del Rio school sports due to his ethnicity. After finishing high school, Padilla went to UT in the 60s and quickly became involved in Chicano activism; he was one of the first members of MASO, and joined their activities in and out of campus. He recalled joining a protest and boycott against the racist owner of a Conoco station in Austin, and being taken to jail with other MASO members. While attending UT, he traveled to Del Rio with other MASO/MAYO members to take part in the Palm Sunday march of 1969. After leaving UT without finishing his degree and a brief stint in Puerto Rico (his parents wanted to take him away from activism), Padilla resumed his professional career, finishing college and later working as a teacher and journalist. Padilla returned to activism while working with Texas Rural Legal Aid; he received a law degree from Texas Southern University, and became an attorney with the TRLA Del Rio …

Diana Abrego talks about being a migrant worker in her early years. She also talks about living in the borderland; being of two worlds, both Mexico & the U.S. She also talks about Del Rio's San Felipe's barrio and the segregation. Some black/brown relations in San Felipe. Being in the brown berets in Del Rio.

Mr. Barrera grew up in and around Del Rio, Texas. His father was a sheep sheerer. Barrera talked about the importance of education to his parents and learning "proper" Spanish. He also talked about the San Felipe barrio and the schools. Later he moved out of the barrio into a more mixed community. He talked about the disparity in sporting equipment between Del Rio ISD & San Felipe. He also talked about teaching drama in Del Rio, the march in 1969, and the impact of school consolidation in 1971. He also mentioned discrimination his drama students experienced during a UIL meet where they were the better team but the Anglo judges gave the win to another team.

De La Paz's interview reflects on the contemporary issues that Del Rio is facing. She speaks about the importance of Casa De La Cultura in her life growing up. She lived in the Chihuahua barrio and went to Del Rio schools. She speaks about not learning about her culture and people who look like her in school. In order to supplement her learning, she would attend classes at the Casa. She spoke about learning culture through teatros and folklorio offered at Casa. The latter part of the interview deals with contemporary problems in Del Rio and the current work of Casa in the community.

Ruben "Pollo" Barragan is a native of Del Rio, and a proud resident of the San Felipe neighborhood. Barragan talked about growing up in San Felipe and race relations in greater Del Rio, his periodic trips to California to work in the fields, and going to school in the San Felipe ISD. Barragan was one of the eight VISTA workers that were expelled from Del Rio under the request of the County Commissioners Court -- a key event that led to the Palm Sunday March. Later in his life, "Pollo" started Project NINO, a charitable initiative that raised funds to provide toys and other goods to poor children in Del Rio every Christmas. Throughout the interview, Barragan talks about the importance of voter registration drives and his work with Texas Rural Legal Aid.

Alonso speaks about growing up in San Felipe and the segregated nature of Del Rio generally. He also speaks a great deal about migrant farm work and following the seasonal harvest. He speaks about his time in the West Texas cotton fields and speaking Spanish in Anglo schools out in West Texas. He talks a little bit about the 1969 Palm Sunday march--he wasn't a participant but he talks about the march. He also talks about the importance of education he received from Bambi Cardenas and Aurelio Montemayor who were both educators at San Felipe in the late 1960s. All in all, this is a great interview that has tons of useful information on Del Rio, San Felipe, and Alonso's life story.

Raul "Rusty" Sanchez spoke about his early life growing up in Del Rio. Going to school and playing football. He talked briefly about discrimination he faced when visiting public spaces and being served in the back of the building. He talks about the segregation of school districts in Del Rio and the base kids going to Del Rio ISD vs San Felipe ISD. He also talks about his time volunteering in VISTA MMP in Del Rio. He talks a little bit about how/why he believed VISTA got pushed out of Del Rio. He spoke about how Aurelio Montemayor helped to educate him as a teacher and pushing him to think about the bigger picture vis a vis the Chicano Movement. He talked about the 1969 Palm Sunday march and being in the Brown Berets.

After her husband was injured on the job in the 1970s, the family had to move to Madison, Wisconsin so that he could receive treatment. Upon their return to Del Rio, the Cazares established in San Felipe; a seasoned activist, Jovita became deeply enmeshed in local politics and grassroots activism. Cazares talks at length about several events that impacted her life, including the 1998 floods that destroyed her house, the death of her daughter and other personal and family struggles. In the mid 1990s, Cazares was the plaintiff in Cazares v. Val Verde County, a lawsuit that challenged the practice of allowing former Laughlin AFB personnel from submitting absentee ballots for local elections.

Interview with ose Maria Pruneda, Jr. called Junior a Country Western musician. He played several instruments including guitar, fiddle, bass, and steel guitar. He was hired by Bob Wills and played with the Poverty Playboys, played at the Grand Ole Opry, toured throughout the United States, and was inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame. In addition to his career, the interview discusses his parents, growing up in the Mexican-American community of Kerrville, and his grandparents lives in Del Rio and Villa Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico. Junior's wife Bobbie and son Joe contribute to the interview.
