Hodges before the Supreme Court of the United States. The couple's careers (in the Air Force and as a corporate lawyer) forced them to stay closeted professionally; they discuss how they developed codes in order to express affection to each other without "outing" themselves.

When Hess was diagnosed with breast cancer, the couple struggled to navigate the medical and legal systems because of their unmarried status, given that same-sex couples could not marry in Texas at that time (mid-1960s). The couple, who flew to San Francisco to marry in January 2014, express how much being married means to them.
