Analysis of Stream Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming (open access)

Analysis of Stream Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming

From introduction: This report relates to the first of the above objectives by describing stream quality in the Yampa River basin through 1976, with particular emphasis on conditions from August 1975 through September 1976. The content of this report is, at times, relatively technical. This is intentional. The report is aimed not at planners and decision makers but rather at those persons assigned the task of having to design, implement, and interpret a river basin assessment. The techniques and procedures used to determine ambient stream quality in the Yampa River basin have been presented in detail so that their applicability to other river basins can be determined. For the planner and decision maker, the results presented in this report are summarized in less technical terms in phase-l (Steele and others, 1979) and phase-ll summary reports.

Areal Extent of a Plume of Mineralized Water from a Flowing Artesian Well in Dade County, Florida

Abstract: A flowing artesian well tapping the Floridan aquifer at Chekika Hammock State Park, Dade County, Florida, has been contaminating the overlying Biscayne aquifer with saline water since 1944. The contaminating plume extends approximately 7 miles downstream and southeast of the well and ranges in width from 1 to 2 miles. The area of contamination is approximately 12 square miles. The primary contaminating chemical constituents are chloride, sodium, and sulfate ions.

Artificial Recharge in the Northern Part of Chino Ground-Water Basin, Upper Santa Ana Valley, California (open access)

Artificial Recharge in the Northern Part of Chino Ground-Water Basin, Upper Santa Ana Valley, California

Purpose and Scope: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the geohydrologic characteristics that influence sustained artificial recharge and to determine long-term infiltration rates in the northern part of Chino ground-water basin. Results of this study will help management to design and implement a recharge-recapture system in Chino Basin. Nine test holes were drilled, long-term infiltration tests were made, and drillers' logs and water-level data were evaluated to determine the probable effects of recharging the ground-water basin. The study was concentrated in the northern part of Chino Basin, where recharge is proposed.

An Assessment of the Collection and Analysis of Hydrologic Data by Private Contractors for the U.S. Geological Survey (open access)

An Assessment of the Collection and Analysis of Hydrologic Data by Private Contractors for the U.S. Geological Survey

From abstract: During fiscal years 1978 through 1981, the U.S. Geological Survey contracted for the acquisition and analysis of hydrologic data from 104 surface water stations, 26 ground water stations, and 15 precipitation gages as well as for several hundred miscellaneous surface water measurements of flow and water quality. The work was performed in Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, terminating at the end of the fiscal year 1981. Assessment of Water Quality in Streams Draining Coal-Producing Areas in Ohio (open access)

Assessment of Water Quality in Streams Draining Coal-Producing Areas in Ohio

From introduction: In 1975 a project was begun to provide information on several aspects of coal hydrology in Ohio. The first phase was a reconnaissance of water-quality conditions in coal-mining regions. Phase one had two primary objectives; to document the occurrence of certain inorganic and organic constituents in waters of the coal-mining regions and to determine if the concentrations of those constituents were related to coal mining. The second phase of the project was a more detailed study of four basins sampled during the first phase.

Backwater and Discharge at Highway Crossing with Multiple Bridges in Louisiana and Mississippi (open access)

Backwater and Discharge at Highway Crossing with Multiple Bridges in Louisiana and Mississippi

Purpose and Scope: The principal objective of this project was to measure the backwater and discharge distribution for multiple bridges. These data have been used to determine if the methods developed by Schneider and others (1976) for single-opening highway crossings could be applied to multiple bridges. In addition, the method developed by Tracey and Carter (1955) and Cragwall (1958) was modified to use the procedure proposed by Schneider and others (1976) to calculate friction losses in the approach reach. This modified procedure was then also tested.
