Assessment of lamellar tearing

Information on lamellar tearing is summarized and related to proposed ASME Code requirements. Lamellar tearing is characterized as a complex phenomenon related to poor short transverse ductility and through-thickness strain. The material, welding, and design variables that affect lamellar tearing are shown to be complex and interrelated. The commonly reported tests for assessing material susceptibility are described, with the controversy over their validity being carefully detailed. Although the use of a nondestructive test such as ultrasonic examination is most desirable, a widely applicable test method does not appear to be available. Of the destructive tests, the short transverse tensile reduction-of-area currently offers the most applicable means of assessing material susceptibility. However, because of the importance of matrix toughness, the short transverse Charpy V-notch test should be considered for use as an additional test if acceptance limits are developed. The ultrasonic detection of lamellar tears is susceptible to interpretation errors, which can make it overly conservative and lead to unnecessary repairs. The repair of tears is described as costly, difficult, and sometimes ineffective. Current design requirements appear to preclude any failures during static and fatigue service loads. Cost of splitting in Monte Carlo transport

In a simple transport problem designed to estimate transmission through a plane slab of x free paths by Monte Carlo methods, it is shown that m-splitting (m > or = 2) does not pay unless exp(x) > m(m + 3)/(m - 1). In such a case, the minimum total cost in terms of machine time is obtained as a function of m, and the optimal value of m is determined.

Depth distributions of low energy deuterium implantations in (110) tungsten: a theoretical model

The depth distributions of 80 eV D/sup +/ implants in (110) W have recently been measured by field desorption microscopy. Prominent structure, consisting of seven major and several minor peaks, is observed in the measured distributions. This contrasts with conventional implantation theory which predicts two peaks, one for the channeled D/sup +/ and one for the nonchanneled D/sup +/. The observed structure is explained in the present report by a model which ascribes the various peaks to D/sup +/ groups which have been scattered into planar channels by the surface impurities. The model allows a determination of D/sup +/ stopping powers in the various planar channels and the stopping power of C and O impurities which recoil down the (110) axis. The model suggests that surface location of the impurities as well as their elastic scattering cross section for D/sup +/ projectiles could be extracted from more elaborate calculations and experiments.

Aliphatic and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are readily extracted from soot formed from a natural gas flame using methylene chloride and ultrasonic agitation. Identification of 24 organic compounds via capillary column GC retention times and GC-MS data is reported along with details of experimental procedures.

Conservation prototype grants management and planning system. Volume 7 of the sourcebook

Part C, Title III, of Public Law 94-163, the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 established a program for State Energy Conservation Plans designed to promote the conservation of energy and reduce the rate of energy demand growth. The Act authorized the Federal Energy Administration, which since has become part of the Department of Energy, to establish procedures for the program and to grant financial and technical assistance to eligible States in support of their Energy Conservation Plans. This manual describes a prototype Grant Management and Planning System (GMPS) which the States may adopt on a voluntary basis to administer grants under the Act. The system has been developed as a national prototype under the auspices of the Office of Conservation and Energy Resource Development, Region I, Boston, Massachusetts. The basic objective of the system is to provide pertinent financial and performance information for effective management of State Energy Conservation Programs. The program management concepts used in GMPS were derived from the ERDA-Uniform Contractor Reporting Guidelines which provided a foundation adaptable to the unique elements of the various State financial and reporting systems.

Recent results from studies of non-gaseous fission products with TRISTAN II

A new in-beam target ion-source combination has been installed at the TRISTAN isotope separator facility. Mass separated beams of nongaseous fission products are now available for study. Studies of levels in even-even Cd and Sn nuclei populated through the decay of Ag and In fission products are described, and an evaluation of possibilities for future research is made.

Excited state electron spin coherence (ESESC) studies of triplet states in molecular solids

The field of coherent spectroscopy of two-level systems is applied to the lowest triplet state of organic molecules. By neglecting the triplet sublevel not coupled by the field, it is possible to describe the remaining two levels with Feynman-Vernon-Hellwarth geometrical representation of a general two-level system. The equations of motion of the pseudomagnetization are derived after transformation to the rotating frame, as are Bloch-type equations which include phenomenological relaxation times. The loss of coherence due to exchange between triplet states with different Larmor frequencies but identical zero-field dipolar tensor axes is then discussed. By writing two sets of coupled Bloch equations, expressions for the effective decay rate and frequency shift of the experimentally monitored triplet system are derived and discussed in the limits of slow and rapid exchange. This analysis is applied to intramolecular tunneling between different configurations of cyclopentanone. It is shown by both spin locking and CW spectra that the tunneling rate is considerably slower than the phosphorescence decay rate of the lowest triplet state. Rotary echoes are considered, both on- and off-resonance, with Average Hamiltonian theory. Acceptable TRU packaging for interim storage and/or terminal isolation: FY-1977 final report

A program was conducted for the definition and demonstration of acceptable waste packages for defense transuranic waste for interim storage and terminal isolation. During FY-1977, a Contractor Questionnaire was used to gather pertinent data and to assess contractor concerns. This information was integrated into basic application data in the form of a checklist. Conceptual Container Design Specifications were developed by analyzing and evaluating the application data against Federal Regulations and interim/terminal storage constraints.

Homogenization of arc-melted uranium-6 weight percent niobium alloy ingots

Microsegregation and macrosegregation in uranium-6 niobium arc-melted ingots were characterized by electron microprobe analysis. Homogenization studies determined that microsegregation can be eliminated by heat treating the alloy for six hours at 1100/sup 0/C. Extensive homogenization did not eliminate macrosegregation (banding) from the as-cast alloy, but a mathematical model describing banding and coring indicated that banding could possibly be eliminated by working prior to homogenization.

Analysis of LOFT steam generator main feed piping loop seal modification

The stress analysis is presented for the proposed loop seal modification to the LOFT Steam Generator Main Feed Piping. THE SAP IV finite element computer program was used to analyze normal, upset, emergency, and faulted conditions. Results of the analysis indicate that the modified main feed piping system will satisfy all structural adequacy criteria specified in Subarticle NC-3650 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Results also show that the isolation snubber configuration, specified in LTR 115-11, will also be adequate for the piping configuration analyzed.

Overview of the Division 2351 Neutron Generator Test Facility waveform digitizing system. [Explosively activated neutron generators]

All neutron generator waveforms from units tested at the SLA neutron generator test site are digitized and the digitized data stored in the CDC 6600 tape library for display and analysis using the CDC 6600 computer. The digitizing equipment consists mainly of seven Biomation Model 8100 transient recorders, Digital Equipment Corporation PDP 11/20 computer, RK05 disk, seven-track magnetic tape transport, and appropriate DEC and SLA controllers and interfaces. The PDP 11/20 computer is programmed in BASIC with assembly language drivers. In addition to digitizing waveforms, this equipment is used for other functions such as the automated testing of multiple-operation electronic neutron generators. Although other types of analysis have been done, the largest use of the digitized data has been for various types of graphical displays using the CDC 6600 and either the SD4020 or DX4460 plotters.

NOVA integrated alignment/diagnostic sensors

Under Contract 3772003 to the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, Aerojet ElectroSystems Company has investigated a number of alignment system design topics for the NOVA and SHIVA upgrade lasers. Prior reports dealt with the Main Beam Alignment System, and with Multipass Amplifier Alignment Concepts. This report, which completes the contract, examines ways in which the Return Beam Diagnostic (RBD) package and Incident Beam Diagnostic (IBD) packages may be reconfigured to a more integrated package. In particular, the report shows that the RBD optics may be directly integrated in the Pointing Focus and Centering (PFC) sensor, and that the IBD optics may use the same basic common configuration as the PFC/RBD package.

Literature review of the saturation state of seawater with respect to calcium carbonate and its possible significance for scale formation on OTEC heat exchangers

An investigation of available data on the saturation state of seawater with respect to calcium carbonate and its possible significance for scale formation on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) heat exchangers has been carried out. Pertinent oceanographic data is lacking at or near potential OTEC sites for the calculation of the degree of saturation of seawater with respect to calcium carbonate. Consequently, only ''extrapolated'' saturation values can be used. These indicate that near surface seawater is probably supersaturated, with respect to the calcium carbonate phases calcite and aragonite, at all potential OTEC sites. The deep seawater that would be brought to the surface at the potential Atlantic Ocean sites is also likely to be supersaturated with respect to calcium carbonate. The deep seawater at the potential Pacific Ocean sites may be slightly undersaturated. The fact that OTEC heat exchangers will be operating in seawater, which is supersaturated with respect to calcium carbonate, means that if nucleation of calcite or aragonite occurs on the heat exchanger surfaces, significant growth rates of calcium carbonate scale may be expected. The potential for calcium carbonate nucleation is highest at cathodic metal surface locations, which are produced as the result of aluminum corrosion in seawater. …

A new pilot plant program developed by DOE and the team members, was started on September 20, 1978. Pilot plant success was achieved in obtaining an ash balanced condition for several days with ash agglomeration with a pure coal feed. This was the objective of the first three months of the approved program.

Blast tests of expedient shelters in the DICE THROW event

To determine the worst blast environments that eight types of expedient shelters can withstand, we subjected a total of 18 shelters to the 1-kiloton blast effects of Defense Nuclear Agency's DICE THROW main event. These expedient shelters included two Russian and two Chinese types. The best shelter tested was a Small-Pole Shelter that had a box-like room of Russian design with ORNL-designed expedient blast entries and blast doors added. It was undamaged at the 53-psi peak overpressure range; the pressure rise inside was only 1.5 psi. An unmodified Russian Pole-Covered Trench Shelter was badly damaged at 6.8 psi. A Chinese ''Man'' Shelter, which skillfully uses very small poles to attain protective earth arching, survived 20 psi, undamaged. Two types of expedient shelters built of materials found in and around most American homes gave good protection at overpressures up to about 6 psi. Rug-Covered Trench Shelters were proved unsatisfactory. Water storage pits lined with ordinary plastic trash bags were proven practical at up to 53 psi, as were triangular expedient blast doors made of poles.

Shippingport Atomic Power Station steam generator tube damage and water chemistry control (1965--1975)

The four stainless steel tubed steam generators in the Shippingport Atomic Power Station were replaced in 1964 with larger, horizontal, NiCrFe Alloy 600 tubed units consistent with a power uprating of the plant. Each of the four Alloy 600 tubed units experienced tube leakage attributed to corrosion by water treatment chemicals (sodium phosphates) which concentrated locally on the tubes in inadequately flushed crevices. Corrective and preventive actions include tube plugging, flow blockage, conversion to all-volatile (hydrazine-morpholine) chemistry and replacement of the two steam generators with the straight tube design. Eddy current inspection after four years of all-volatile chemistry use showed a diminished rate of crevice corrosion and no tube denting.

The transmission of hadrons through iron absorbers is investigated for a variety of experimental configurations, and incident particle types (protons, and charged pions) and energies (0.8 GeV/c to 100 GeV). The results obtained are consistent with available experimental data.

Some atmospheric tracer experiments in complex terrain at LASL: experimental design and data. [Fluorescent particle tracer study]

Two series of atmospheric tracer experiments were conducted in complex terrain situations in and around the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. Fluorescent particle tracers were used to investigate nighttime drainage flow in Los Alamos Canyon and daytime flow across the local canyon-mesa complex. This report describes the details of these experiments and presents a summary of the data collected. A subsequent report will discuss the analysis of these data.

The Industrial Fuel Gas Demonstration Plant Program (MLGW/DOE), Contract ET-77-C-01-2582, has been slowed due to lack of an adequate data base for demonstration plant design. This design data base is to be developed by Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) at their U-GAS pilot plant. While initial data and operating results from the pilot plant have been encouraging, ash-balanced operation with coal using the technique of ash agglomeration has proven to be more difficult than originally envisioned. Ash must be removed from the gasifier at the same rate as it is being fed to achieve overall ash balance. Adequate ash balance has been achieved by bed withdrawal, but in order to attain high levels of carbon utilization, preferential removal of high-ash material from the gasifier will be required. It is the conclusion of all parties involved that the operating parameters necessary to achieve ash balance and high carbon utilization must be demonstrated at the pilot plant level before a full scale demonstration plant design effort is started. Radiation emergency response in Illinois, Alabama, and Texas

The objective of this study was to examine state radiation emergency response and to locate any areas of emergency planning in need of improvement. This report briefly presents a summary of laws and defining documents governing radiation emergency response, describes the existing and projected need for such response, and presents the authors' analyses of the evolution of state response plans and their application to radiation incidents. Three states' programs are discussed in detail: Illinois, Alabama, and Texas. These states were selected because they have quite different emergency-response programs. Therefore, these state programs provide a wide variety of approaches to state radiation emergency response.

Investigation of methylpentene polymer (TPX) molding resin. Final report

A polymethylpentene polymer (TPX) produced by Mitsui Petrochemical Industries, Ltd., Japan, was evaluated and compared to a TPX previously obtained from Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., England, who no longer produce TPX and have sold their manufacturing process for this polymer to Mitsui. The rheological, chemical, and physical properties of the materials were compared and the two materials were found to be essentially identical.
