Radioactive Waste Disposal Practices in the Atomic Energy Industry. A Survey of the Costs

A survey was made on methcds and related costs of disposing of radioactive wastes as practiced in 1955 by twelve atomic industry installations. Wherever possible, estimated unit costs of differentiated stages of waste handling are shown- these are integrated to show the over-all scope of waste dispesal practices at each site. Tabular data summarize costs and operation magnitades at the installations. A pattern is established for standardizing the reporting of fixed costs and equipment unsage costs. The economy of solid waste volume reduction is analyzed. Material costs are listed. An outline for recording monthly waste disposal costs is presented. Obvious conclusions drawn from the factual data are: that it is more expensive per cubic foot to handle high-level wastes than low-level wastes. and that land disposal is less expenaive than sea disposal. A reexamination of baling economics shows that high compression of solid wastes is more expensive than simpler forms of compaction. (auth)

"A supplementary investigation has been conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel of a 1/20-scale model of the Douglas XF4D-1 airplane to determine the effect of only neutralizing the rudder for recovery from an inverted spin, and the effect of partial aileron deflection with the spin for recovery from an erect spin. An estimation of the size parachute required for satisfactory recovery from a spin with the model ballasted to represent the Douglas F5D-1 (formerly the Douglas XF4D-2) airplane was also made. Results of the original investigation on the XF4D-1 design are presented in NACA RM SL50K30a" (p. 1).

Report presenting the results of force and moment tests at a range of Mach numbers on two rectangular-plan-form, all-movable controls in combination with a slender body of revolution are presented and compared with the predictions of theory. The results showed that lift variations with angle of attack were somewhat nonlinear for both control-body combinations tested.

Development of craze and impact resistance in glazing plastics by multiaxial stretching

The loss of strength of cast polymethyl methacrylate plastic as a result of crazing is of considerable importance to the aircraft industry. Because of the critical need for basic information on the nature of crazing and the effects of various treatments and environmental conditions on its incidence and magnitude, an investigation of this phenomenon was undertaken. The following factors were examined: (1) the effect of stress-solvent crazing on tensile strength of polymethyl methacrylate; (2) the critical stress and strain for onset of crazing at various temperatures; (3) the effect of molecular weight on crazing; and (4) the effect of multiaxial stretching on crazing of polymethyl methacrylate and other acrylic glazing materials.

From Summary: "The results of an experimental investigation of the hinge-moment characteristics of a constant-chord control surface oscillating at high frequency is presented. The control surface was mounted on an aspect-ratio-2 triangular wing. The aerodynamic restoring-moment coefficient and damping-moment coefficient were determined at a frequency of 260 cycles per second for a Mach number range of 0.6 to 0.8 and 1.3 to 1.9 at angles of attack of 5 degrees and 10 degrees. The test results showed linear theory to be a reliable guide to the prediction of the trend of the restoring-moment coefficient with Mach number for the supersonic speed range of the investigation but overestimated the magnitude of the coefficient."

A method for simulating the atmospheric entry of long-range ballistic missiles

From Summary: "It is demonstrated with the aid of similitude arguments that a model launched from a hypervelocity gun upstream through a special supersonic nozzle should experience aerodynamic heating and resulting thermal stresses like those encountered by a long-range ballistic missile entering the earth's atmosphere. This demonstration hinges on the requirements that model and missile be geometrically similar and made of the same material, and that they have the same flight speed and Reynolds number (based on conditions just outside the boundary layer) at corresponding points in their trajectories. The hypervelocity gun provides the model with the required initial speed, while the nozzle scales the atmosphere, in terms of density variation, to provide the model with speeds and Reynolds numbers over its entire trajectory."

Preliminary Investigation of Several Root Designs for Cermet Turbine Blades in Turbojet Engine 3: Curved-Root Design

Stresses on the root fastenings of turbine blades were appreciably reduced by redesign of the root. The redesign consisted in curving the root to approximately conform to the camber of the airfoil and elimination of the blade platform. Full-scale jet-engine tests at rated speed using cermet blades of the design confirmed the improvement.

Analytical Chemistry Division Semiannual Progress Report For Period Ending October 20, 1955

The development of ionic methods for the determination of corrosive products in the highly radioactive Homogeneous Reactor (HR) fuels has been of major interest in the work of the Ionic Analyses Laboratory. Methods for the spectrophotometric determination of aluminum and for the polarographic determination of iron in HR fuels have been developed. The polarographic determination of molybdenum in uranyl sulfate solutions was studied. A polarographic method for the determination of zinc was developed. A fluorometric method for the determination of microgram amounts of fluoride was studied. Three organic reagents were investigated as precipitants for microgram quantities of zirconium in HR fuel. The automatic photometric titration technique was applied to the determination of thorium and of sulfate. A method was developed for the ion-exchange separation and potentiometric titration of cobalt. The ultraviolet absorption spectra of technetium and rhenium were studied.

Calculated data and graphs describing the effects of batch thermal-neutron irradiation of thorium, the usual method of operation of heterogeneous reactors, are presented. The buildup and decay of U233, Pa233, other heavy isotopes, and fission products are considered on the basis of best available cross-section and fission-yield data. The effects of these irradiation products on the Thorex chemical separation process are indicated briefly.

Regeneration of Silver Reactors

A study of the variables involved in regeneration was undertaken to determine means of improving the regeneration efficiency and increasing the useful life of a reactor. Information gained from regeneration studies on a 4-inch-diameter by 8-foot-high column indicates that the present regeneration procedure is optimum as to quantity, concentration, and rate of addition of regenerant solution. It appears feasible to restore a plugged reactor by washing off all the silver nitrate from the packing and recoating by a normal regeneration cycle. Such a procedure could be utilized only if there is sufficient dead space in the bottom of the reactor to hold the wash solution.

Calculation of Control Rod Worth in Appr-1

Seven control rods will be used in the APPR-1 instead of five as originally planned. Critical experiments evaluating the rod worth for the APPR-1 have been performed at ORNL, and calculations have been carried out by ALCO interpreting these experimental results. The calculations indicate that the capability of any four of the original five rods to shut down the cold reactor at mid-life is marginal. The calculations are summarized in this memorandum. (auth)
