Isotope Effects on Intermolecular Interactions and Isotopic Vapor Pressure Differences (open access)

Isotope Effects on Intermolecular Interactions and Isotopic Vapor Pressure Differences

From summary: "The isotope effect on the van der Waals interaction resulting from vibrational excitation terms has been discussed in great detail to show that it is a zero-point energy effect. Interaction between rotational, transistional, and vibrational motion in the condensed phase has been also discussed in detail in terms of a very simple model. By use of approximation methods, the order of magnitude of these effects is demonstrated and it is shown that consideration of them is of importance in connection with vapor pressure isotope effects. Some other origins of vapor pressure isotope effects are cursorily discussed."

Free Radicals Formed on u.V. Irradiation of o-Nitrobenzaldehyde

This technical report describes the chemistry process of photolysis which was carried out within a Varian 4500 EPR spectrometer. Through this process, it was found that free radicals form both in a powder and in solutions of o-nitrobenzaldehyde. It was found that the formation of free radicals on irradiation of substituted nitrobenzenes was specific for compounds which undergo the photoinduced rearrangement to nitrosocompounds. The report then details the process undertaken to identify the free radicals found.

The Somatic Mutation Theory of Aging: Its Application in Irradiated and Non-Irradiated Livers of Mice

From introduction: "The somatic mutation theory of aging proposes an increased frequency of somatic mutation sin tissue cells with age. The present series of experiments concern themselves with the expression of these mutations in the irradiated and non-irradiated livers of mice and their place in the aging phenomenon. In this work visible chromosome aberrations are the somatic mutations recorded as an index of genetic change."

Equations for Bilateral Heat Transfer to Fluids Flowing in Concentric Annuli (open access)

Equations for Bilateral Heat Transfer to Fluids Flowing in Concentric Annuli

Abstract: "Theoretical equations have been derived for calculating heat transfer coefficients for fluids flowing through concentric annuli for the following two cases: (A) constant and equal heat fluxes from both walls, and (B) constant, but unequal, heat fluxes from the walls, with equal wall temperatures at a given axial position along annular channel. In the derivations, the conditions of fully-established flow, and independence of physical properties with temperature variation across the flow channel, were assumed. The only geometrical parameter in this general case is the radius ratio r2/r1, and in the study it was varied from 1.0 to 10.0."

A Needle in a Haystack (open access)

A Needle in a Haystack

Abstract: "Production of [rho]'s and [omega]'s in [pi]- + p and p + [letter p with a bar over it] interactions is discussed. The [rho] is presumably a J = 1-, 1 = 1 state and thus can decay into 2[pi]'s via a strong coupling. The [omega] is probably J = 1-, 1 = 0 which can also decay into 2[pi]'s via electromagnetic coupling. A theoretical description of this situation is presented in terms of coupled time-dependent Schroedinger equations which mix [rho] and [omega] states that are assumed to be isotopically pure at the time of production. The interference between the two resonances was found to have the effect of extending the 2[pi] spectrum toward the [omega] mass."

Pathologic and Behavioral Changes in Mice Following CNS Deuteron Irradiation (open access)

Pathologic and Behavioral Changes in Mice Following CNS Deuteron Irradiation

From introduction: "The specific aims of this study were the following: (1) To produce radiogenic lesions by 1 mm deuteron beams at a dose of 8,000 rads directed unilaterally and bilaterally to the parietal areas and unilaterally to the cerebellum, and by two 9 x 0.025 mm microbeams, 0.5 mm apart, applied across the neocerebellar cortex at 72,000 rads; and (2) to relate these histopathologically demonstrable alterations to possible behavioral changes following irradiation. Since these radiogenic lesions may produce some selective functional alterations in sensory, associative, and motor processes, it was deemed essential to utilize a variety of behavioral screening tests. These tests included (a) the open field test based upon exploratory behavior; (b) spontaneous locomotor activity in activity wheels, and (c) stress reactivity under shock motivated escape-avoidance conditions.
