Thermal Distortion of SAR Hafnium Control Rod (open access)

Thermal Distortion of SAR Hafnium Control Rod

Abstract: The thermal distortion of a Y-shaped hafnium control rod heated by arrays of individually controlled radiation heaters was studied. The large axial and radial temperature gradients specified for this control rod were easily obtained with the radiation-heating method. The distortion, as measured with dial indicators, amounted to a 2-mil movement of the free end of the rod in the direction of the coolest blade.

Survey of Refractory Uranium Compounds (open access)

Survey of Refractory Uranium Compounds

Abstract: Chemical and physical data on twenty binary uranium compounds that may prove suitable for refractory nuclear fuels were assembled. The compounds were those with aluminum, boron, carbon, iron, nickel, nitrogen, silicon, or sulfur. Too little is known at this time about the compounds to evaluate any of them for fuel. The program is being extended in an effort to provide the needed data.

Energy Transfer Between Modified Maxwell Distributions (open access)

Energy Transfer Between Modified Maxwell Distributions

Abstract: "A particularly conventional modified form of Maxwell distribution is chosen. The modified expressions for (a) the energy transfer from the ions to the electrons in a plasma and (b) the brehmestrahlung from the electrons are calculated. Using the expressions some possible steady-state conditions for the ion and electron gases are derived and compared with those for the usual Maxwell distributions."

Production of Large Energetic Neutral Deuteron Beams

Introduction: A proposal for using an energetic neutral deuteron beam for injection into a mirror machine has been made by Eugene Lauer. This report describes an experimental attempt to produce a large neutral deuteron beam. The beam from the NTA ion source was passed through a target of hydrogen gas where the charge exchange mechanics produced a beam of energetic neutral deuterium atoms.

Mesaverde Uranium Deposits in the Yale Point-Black Mountain Area, Arizona (open access)

Mesaverde Uranium Deposits in the Yale Point-Black Mountain Area, Arizona

Abstract: To date uranium deposits have been confined to a thin sandstone in a zone near the contact of the Middle and Lower Members of the Toreva Formation and as a leach in the Lower Sandstone Member. On a large scale the deposits are apparently restricted to zones of tectonic deformation. Locally mineralization is primarily controlled by small intraformational channels and cross bedding, and is usually associated with carbonaceous material and quartzose sand lenses.

The Occurrence of Uranium in the Diamond Head Group, Sierrita Mountains, Pima County, Arizona (open access)

The Occurrence of Uranium in the Diamond Head Group, Sierrita Mountains, Pima County, Arizona

Abstract: The Diamond Head droup area is entirely igneous. Tight fractures in alaskite and granite, which have been altered by heiratite and kaolinization contain narrow seams and very locally, pods of sooty uraninite. A greater percentage of the structures in the area strike about east-west and dip steeply to the north, while the radioactive structures have similar strike, they dip steeply to both the north and the south. A drift has been driven on a mineralized structure far enough to ascertain that the general character of the mineralization is very narrow seams. Many such seams exists but are scattered throughout the area.

A Preliminary Investigation of Triassic Rocks in the Lukachukai Mountains, Arizona (open access)

A Preliminary Investigation of Triassic Rocks in the Lukachukai Mountains, Arizona

Abstract: During the summer of 1955, two test holes were drilled into the Triassic Chinle Formation in the Lukachukai Mountains near Cove, Arizona, to obtain geologic information. Brief airborne and ground reconnaissance was made of Triassic outcrops near Cove. No anomalous radioactivity was found in the test holes, but chemical tests showed concentrations of heavy metals in conglomerate lenses in the Chinle Formation. Channel sandstones in the middle part of the Petrified Forest Member appear to be the most favorable for mineralization. The Shinarump Member, here underlain by a permeable unit, and occurring at depths greater than 500 feet, appears less promising for uranium exploration.

Materials for Fluorine Generator Anode Assemblies

Corrosion of anode assembly materials in fluorine generators is pronounced, therefore, selection of the proper materials for construction is important. Several metals and alloys have been tested for corrosion resistance when anodic in a fluorine test cell. In general, copper, copper alloys and magnesium alloys offer the best corrosion resistance.

Preliminary Report on Uranium Occurrence, Silver King Claims, Tooele County, Utah (open access)

Preliminary Report on Uranium Occurrence, Silver King Claims, Tooele County, Utah

Abstract: Uranium was discovered on the Silver King claims in the fall of 1953. The claims are on the west flank of the Sheeprock Mountains in the eastern part of the Erickson mining district, Tooele County, Utah. Uraninite occurs in north- to northwest-trending copper-nickel-silver bearing fissure veins near the margin of a granitic stock of probable late Tertiary age. Sedimentary rocks in contact with the granite are chiefly dolomite and quartzite of Middle and Upper Ordovician age. Diamond drilling on this property did not disclose significant amounts of uranium; however, encouraging showings have been found by underground exploration by the owner.
