Formation of Nitrogen Oxides by Alpha Particle Irradiation of the System Nâ‚‚-COâ‚‚
Abstract: "The reaction between nitrogen and carbon dioxide, under irradiation with 40 Mev alpha particles from the Berkeley 60 inch cyclotron, was studied at gas temperatures near 50 C and total pressures of about 600 millimeters of Hg, contained in Pyrex capsules. The range of gas compositions investigated included the pure components, as well as mixtures with and without trace oxygen. In all mixtures, a steady state concentration of nitrogen oxides of about 0.15 millimeter was reached after a few microampere hours exposure. The mass-spectrometer analytical procedure employed did not permit identification of the individual species of oxides present. This report is based on studies conducted for the Atomic Energy Commission under Contract AT-11-1-GEN-8."

Coulometric Titration Plutonium
Abstract:"A method is described for the electroreduction of plutonium to the +3 valence state in a nitric acid-sulfamic acid solution. Exploratory experiments in the search for a coulometric titration of Pu(III) using electrolytically generated ceric ion are also described. The results strongly indicate that a convenient procedure can be devised. Suggestions for future work are presented."

Graphitization Processes in Cokes and Carbon Blacks
Abstract: "The effect of heat treatment of 2000 to 4650 F on the structure of carbons from several sources have been investigated, using X-ray diffraction. Of particular interest was the effect of temperature on the degree of graphitization. The process of graphitization results in a larger graphite crystallite size in the ao direction, the plane of the layers, than in the co direction. No correlation was found between the structure of the coke heated at 2000 F and the degree of graphitization attained at 4650 F. Materials coked in a closed retort yielded a more perfect graphite structure than the same material coked with access to air. Carbon blacks yield graphite with a greater co lattice constant than cokes with comparable crystallite sizes."

A Model for Radiation Damaged Ductile Metals
Abstract: "A model is presented for radiation damage to ductile metals that accounts qualitatively for the effects of radiation on the electrical and mechanical properties. The model consists of an agglomeration of interstitially displaced atoms into stacking faults in the lattice."

Crystal Structure of a KPuO₂CO₃, NH₄ PuO₂CO₃, RbAmO₂CO₃
From abstract: "The preceding article describes the preparation of a number of alkali carbonates of pentavalent neptunium, plutonium, or americium. The results of x-ray diffraction studies of some of these carbonate precipitates are presented in the present paper. The preparations to be dealt with are the K-Pu(V) (at low pH), NH4-Pu(V) and Rb-Am(V) precipitates which form one iso-structural series. In the case of the other preparations discussed in the preceding article, the x-ray work did not lead to reliable conclusions as to chemical formula and crystal structure."
