Screening study on high temperature energy transport systems

The purpose of the study described in this document is to identify the options for transporting thermal energy over long distances. The study deals specifically and exclusively with high temperature (> 400/sup 0/C(752/sup 0/F)) energy for industrial use. Energy transport is seen as a potential solution to: high unit cost of small coal and nuclear steam generators, and opposition to siting of coal or nuclear plants near populated areas. The study is of a preliminary nature but covers many options including steam, molten salts, organics, and chemical heat pipes. The development status and potential problems of these and other energy transport methods are discussed. Energy transport concepts are compared on a fundamental level based on physical properties and also are subjected to an economic study. The economic study indicated that the chemical heat pipe, under a specific set of circumstances, appeared to be the least expensive for distances greater than about 32 km (20 miles). However, if the temperature of the energy was lowered, the heat transfer salt (sodium nitrate/nitrite) system would apparently be a better economic choice for less than about 80 km (50 miles). None of the options studied appear to be more attractive than small coal-fired boilers …

SRE CONTROL ROD SHIELDING REQUIREMENTS

Data taken on radiation traverse of the Mark 1 control rod were analyzed. Future radiation levels for all SRE control and safety rods were predicted from this. The shielding necessary to ship a complete rod and that necessary to protect a person doing maintenance work on these rods were calculated. The unshielded gamma dose rate 1 cm from the surface of the most highly activated portion of the control rod was calculated to be 5.0 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr 14 days after shutdown following an extended power run of 90 days duration. Improved tunnel resistance of silvered-polymer mirrors

This report documents the research performed at the Solar Energy Research Institute during fiscal year (FY) 1991 to develop ways to prevent delamination failure (known as tunneling) of silvered-polymer reflector materials. Several promising approaches have been identified and demonstrated that substantially reduce such failures. These approaches include (1) use of Tedlar edge tape rather than the manufacturer-recommended ECP-244 tape, (2) thermal treatment of laminated reflector/substrate constructions, and (3) application of silver to the polymer film through an alternative deposition process. Approaches 1 and 2 offer readily available engineering solutions to the delamination problem. Approaches 2 and 3 provide tunnel resistance over the entire surface of the reflector material, including the edges. Tedlar (a polyvinyl fluoride from DuPont) tape is an opaque white tape available in different widths from 3M Company. The base material has demonstrated outstanding outdoor durability. Thermal treatment of ECP-305 laminated to substrate materials has demonstrated outstanding resistance to tunneling. Alternative silver deposition techniques such as sputtering (rather than thermal evaporation) offer increased resistance to tunneling. 15 refs., 10 figs.

Optical watthour meter digitizer

As concern about energy conservation and energy-use efficiency increases, a simple and inexpensive instrument that would provide accurate, reliable and high-resolution data on electrical energy usage should find widespread application in research and industrial facilities. An instrument that would also provide one or more outputs compatible with a wide range of digital data acquisition systems would be especially appropriate, since the use of automatic data logging equipment is now common, even in small-scale and low-budget operations. An optical watthour meter digitizer was developed which meets these criteria. Based on the induction-type watthour meter, the digitizer provides an output pulse for a fixed amount of energy use. The digitizer senses the motion of the rotor disc of the meter by optically detecting passage of a nonreflective area painted on the underside of the disc. The passage of such area initiates a logic-compatible output pulse that can be used to measure power or energy usage in a variety of ways. The accuracy of the measurement is determined by the watthour meter. The resolution of the measurement is determined by the K/sub h/ constant (in watthours per revolution) of the meter and the number of equally spaced targets painted on the disc. The …

EXTRACTION OF NEPTUNIUM FROM ACIDIC SOLUTIONS BY ORGANIC NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS COMPOUNDS

Neptunium distribution coefficients from acid nitrate, chloride, and sulfate solutions by several organic nitiogen and phosphorus compounds were measured as functions of several extraction variables, including neptunium valence, acid and salt concentration, and reagent concentration. Extractability by all the reagents varied in the order Np(IV)> Np(VI)>> Np(V). Except for primary amines, all reagents extracted Np(IV) much more strongly from nitrate than sulfate solutions. Among organonitrogen compounds the order of extractability of Np(IV) was: quaternary> tertiary> primary and secondary from nitrate solutions but primary>> secondary> tertiary from sulfate solutions. Neptunium(IV) nitrate extractions with the different extractants passed through maxima at widely different acid concentrations. In most cases, extraction increased when nitric acid was replaced by nitrate salt. Extraction was usually approximately proportional to the square of the reagent concentration. (auth)

Research was continued in the areas of intrinsic radioactive tracers for industrial process control and the influence of structural factors in radiation- induced graft polymerization. The use of in-process isotope neutron soarces to produce short-lived radiotraces is discussed. A 10c Po--Be neutron source was obtained for exploratory experiments. The design and construction of a neutronsource storage shield and an activatioa-cell holder are underway. The effect of structural factors oii the eIficiency of free-radical site formation in acrylate and methacrylate polymers was emphasized. Site measurements versus dose were made for poly-n-hexylmethacrylate. Two additional methods for measuring free-radical conceiitrations, a chemical method employing diphenylpicrylhydrazyl and hydroquinone and a method based on molecular-weight decreases, were developed. Thermal-Stress and Strain-Fatigue Analyses of the MSRE Fuel and Coolant Pump Tanks

Thermal-stress and strain-fatigue analyses of the MSRE fuel and coolant pump tanks were completed for determining the quantity of coollng air required to obtain the maximum life of the pump tanks and to determine the acceptability of the pump tanks for the intended service of 100 heating cycles from room temperature to 1200 deg F and 500 reactor power-change cycles from zero to 10 Mw. A cooling-air flow rate of 200 cfm for the fuel pump tank was found to be an optimum value that provided an ample margin of safety. The coolant pump tank was found to be capable of the required service without air cooling. (auth)

SNAP 7 Program--Task 8--Strontium-90 Fueled Thermoelectric Generator Development. Quarterly Progress Report No. 5, November 1, 1961 to January 31, 1962

The SNAP 7A battery and converter were subjected to the required shock, vibration and temperature teats. The generator was fueled, postfueling radiation levels were checked and the generator was integrated into the complete SNAP 7A system. After the completion of acceptance tests, the SNAP 7A system was installed in a buoy which, in turn, was anchored in the bay where it will be subjected to further evaluation. The SNAP 7C generator was shipped for transport to Antarctica. The generator will power a five-watt U. S. Navy remote weather station. Tests were also conducted to determine the operational characteristics of SNAP 7B and 7D thermoelectric couples. Also, the reliability model of the generator was operated at high temperature for 23 days. The electrical, converter and battery specifications for the SNAP 7D system were completed and released. The primary effort in the fael processing phase of the program was to provide the necessary liaison with the personnel installing the processing equipment. Maintenance and checkout guides were written to assure satisfactory installation and continued performance throughout the fuel processing span. An operation procedure guide was written to describe the engineering concept of the fuel processing operation. The guide was written for the personnel …

DEVELOPMENT OF PLUTONIUM BEARING FUEL MATERIALS. Progress Report for Period April 1 through June 30, 1961

BS>Activities are discussed for work done in the preparation of PuO/sub 2/ using the continuous oxalate process, and continuous coprecipitation studies using a uranium-20 wt% plutonium nitrate feed solution. Characterization studies of the PuO/sub 2/ powders indicated that variations in the processing variables can affect the final product. Measurements with the B. E. T. and Innes apparatus confirmed that the specific surface area of the initial batch of the PuO/sub 2/ powder had increased appreciably during storage. Deltatherm differential thermal analysis apparatus was checked out. Procedures were devised for the determination of plutonium and uranium. Sintering studies were continued for pure PuO/sub 2/, and sintering trials were begun for mechanically mixed and coprecipitated PuO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/. Metallographic examinations of PuO/sub 2/ sintered pellets revealed a microstructural feature similar to eutectoid structures in alloys. Mechanical packing experiments were carried out using crushed UO/sub 2/ pellets fired to high density. Plasma torch production of UO/ sub 2/ indicates that excellent spheroidization is attained, but central voids were found in the pellets. Reactor physics studies were completed for the analysis of the potential of plutonium as a fuel in near-thermal converter and straight burner reactors. Plutonium was shown to be promising …
