An Optical Fallout Analogue (open access)

An Optical Fallout Analogue

This report describes the optical analogue that contains an optical filtering system which controls the intensity of light according to the assumed initial distribution of activity over height and particle size and according to the assumed decay rate, a size control system which depends on the lateral dimensions of the cloud of debris and adjusts the size of the light beam accordingly, and a position control system which moves the beam to the correct position on the plate as determined by the wind structure and the time of fall of the particles.

Process Development of 2,2-Dinitropropyl Acrylate (open access)

Process Development of 2,2-Dinitropropyl Acrylate

Abstract: Developmental production of approximately 500 pounds of 2,2-dinitropropanol and 250 pounds of 2,2-dinitropropyl acrylate was carried out in a 50-gallon capacity stainless-steel reactor system. The intermediate alcohol was produced in a yield of 73%. The ester was made with a yield of 78%. Cost studies show that the manufacturing cost for DNPA monomer should approximate $2.70 per pound on a production basis of 30,000 pounds, with an indicated plant cost of $4.60 per pound for the polymeric form.

Travel to FMPC for the meeting of the Thorium Working Committee. Trip report, September 20, 1955

A meeting of the Thorium Working Committee was held at FMPC on September 20, 1955. The current status of the thorium production program was discussed and a limited development and evaluation program was outlined which it is felt will (1) clear up some of the more important question marks in thorium metal quality and (2) develop a more satisfactory method for processing solid metal scrap. The basic parts of this immediate program are (1) SRL would evaluate ingot sections of as-cast double arc-melted virgin metal in order to classify typical ingot defects and determine their frequency of occurrence; (2) Du Pont would request for evaluation purposes ingot sections from typical recycle ingots which incorporated vacuum-induction melting for the consolidation of recycle metal in the form of consumable electrodes for arc-melting; (3) after completion of item (2), du Pont would then request approximately 200 slugs, made from suitably processed recycle metal, which would be used for canning and steam autoclave tests. This program should lead to definite specifications (and/or classifications) for ingots to be stockpiled for future AEC use.

Geologic and Radiometric Reconnaissance Along the San Juan and Colorado Rivers Between Mexican Hat, Utah, and Lees Ferry Arizona (open access)

Geologic and Radiometric Reconnaissance Along the San Juan and Colorado Rivers Between Mexican Hat, Utah, and Lees Ferry Arizona

Abstract: Ten days were spent during June 1955, examining the sedimentary rocks along the San Juan and Colorado Rivers between Mexican Hat, Utah, and Lee's Ferry, Arizona. The most favorable area for uranium deposits occurs in the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation between Clay Hills Crossing and Spencer Camp along the San Juan River. Mineralization is spotty and deposits are small and almost all below ore-grade. Only one small mine, the Whirlwind, is currently producing ore. Gray-green alteration of the underlying Moenkopi is moderately developed in the vicinity of the Whirlwind mine; elsewhere alteration is weakly developed.

Temperature of the Columbia River between Priest Rapids, Washington and Umatilla, Oregon (open access)

Temperature of the Columbia River between Priest Rapids, Washington and Umatilla, Oregon

This report brings together certain temperature information of the Columbia River which is related to the Hanford plant of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. The temperature of the Columbia River is important for a number of reasons including the possible effect on aquatic life especially the habitat for salmon and the supply of cooling water for the Hanford reactors. Since the heated cooling waters from these atomic reactors are returned to the Columbia River without substantial cooling, the re suiting river water temperature increase is monitored. Climatic conditions influence greatly the temperature and flow of the river. Of these, the solar heating effects are very important. In this review the flow and temperature of both the Columbia and Snake Rivers are considered.
