S. 1961 and H.R. 4024: Legislative Responses to a Chemical Storage Facility Spill
From Summary: "This report describes and analyzes H.R. 4024 and S. 1961, as reported. The bill share a number of broadly similar provisions-both would direct states or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish programs to prevent and respond to releases from chemical storage facilities (H.R. 4024) or tanks (S. 1961) located near drinking water sources-but they take different approaches to doing so; S. 1961 would make programmatic changes by amending the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), while H.R. 4024 would amend the Clean Water Act (CWA)."

Analyses of Coals in the United States with Descriptions of Mine and Field Samples Collected between July 1, 1904 and June 30, 1910 Part 2. Descriptions of Samples
From Introduction: "This volume contains the descriptions of the samples whose analyses are published in the preceding volume, Part I of this bulletin. The descriptions have been compiled from the notebooks of the persons who collected the samples, have been condensed from accounts given in published reports of the United States Geological Survey, or have furnished by the collection themselves. Inasmuch as the descriptions represent the work of many persons during a period of six years, and inasmuch as they were recorded under widely differing conditions, they necessarily vary in fullness detail."

From Forward: "This bulletin is the first of a new series, which includes analyses of only tipple and delivered coal. It covers samples collected throughout the United States from July 1, 1947 to June 30, 1950 (fiscal years 1948-50). It is planned that future publications of this series will cover a period of one fiscal year only and be issued as soon as possible after June 30 of each year."

Annual Report of Research and Technologic Work on Coal: Fiscal Year 1941
Report issued by the U.S. Bureau of Mines discussing the annual report over the research and technology of coal during 1941. As stated in the foreword, "these investigations increase our fund of exact knowledge on the properties and composition of American coals and lead to better methods in mining, preparing, storing, and utilizing coal" (p. 4). This report includes tables, illustrations, photographs, and a map.

Bluefield 1° x 2° NTMS Area, Virginia, and West Virginia: Data Report (Abbreviated)
From abstract: This abbreviated data report presents results of ground water, surface water, and stream sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Bluefield 1* x 2 quadrangle. Surface sediment samples were collected at 886 sites, and surface water samples were collected at 595 of these sites. Ground water samples were collected at 1374 of these sites. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for uranium and 16 other elements in sediments, for uranium and 8 other elements in ground water, and for uranium and 9 other elements in surface water. Field measurements and observations are reported for each site. Analytical data and field measurements are presented in tables and maps.

Carbonizing Properties: Chilton Coal from Lorado Number 5 Mine, Lorado, Logan County, West Virginia
From Forward: "The value of this survey of the carbonizing properties of American coals by a standard method lies in the comparability of the results on different coals. A secondary objective of the Bureau of Mines carbonization studies is to obtain information on the chemical and physical properties of different coals that may effect the yield and nature of the gas, coke, and byproducts."

Carbonizing Properties of West Virginia Coals and Blends of Coals From the Alma, Cedar Grove, Dorothy Powellton A, Eagle, Pocahontas and Beckley Beds
From Introduction: "The composition and carbonizing properties of 33 coals previously tested have been given in technical papers of the Bureau of Mines and in short reports published for the most part in the Proceedings of the American Gas Association. A complete list of publications on the work previous to 1937 is appended to this report. The present report gives the composition and carbonizing properties of seven additional coals from West Virginia. The data include results of blending test in which Beckley bed low-volatile coal was used with all the high-volatile coals except the Alma coal, with which Pocahontas No. 4 coal was used."

Carbonizing Properties: Pocahontas Number 6, Davy Sewell, and Fire Creek Coals from West Virginia and Upper and Lower Kittanning and Upper and Lower Freeport Coals from Pennsylvania
From Forward: "The value of this survey of the carbonizing properties of American coals by a standard method lies in the comparability of the results on different coals. It must recognized that no standard laboratory method of carbonization, even on a large unit, can yield results that exactly duplicate those obtained in ovens and retorts. The commercial results vary with the type of oven or retort. Allowance must be made for such differences in interpreting the BM-AGA test results in terms of commercial plants."
