The Nevada Operations Office of the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) has contracted with Petroleum Technology Corporation (PTC) to perform a gas stimulation program by chemical explosive fracturing (CEF) in the Canyon sands of the Val Verde - Kerr Basin of Sutton County, Texas. This lenticular tight sand deposit, underlying much of southwestern Texas, contains large volumes of natural gas. To date this formation has yielded only marginal amounts of gas because of its low porosity and permeability. The semi-arid environment of the Aldwell/Sawyer field is characterized by dry arroyos and xeric vegetation. Population is sparse and sheep ranching is the primary occupation. Because of the existence of previously drilled oil and gas wells, road and pipeline construction will be minimal. Impacts from this two well project are expected to be minimal and be confined to temporary surface disruption and increased erosion at the well site.

From objectives: This report describes the physical geology of the Catahoula Formation-its genetic stratigraphy, structure, mineralogical composition, and post-depositional history and discusses the known distribution of uranium within the context of these geological parameters. Emphasis is on definition of primary physical and historical factors affecting the mobilization, transport, and concentration of uranium in the Catahoula Formation.

From objectives: This report demonstrates the concept of hydrogeochemical sampling to be used in the 12-state region for which UCC-ND has the responsibility if surveying as part of the NURE. The results of a geochemical survey at two sample spacings in the Crystal City Quadrangle in south Texas are presented.

From abstract: Results of a reconnaissance geochemical survey at a nominal sample spacing of 16 km (10 mi) are reported for the Plainview, Lubbock, and Big Spring Quadrangles in northwest Texas. Stream sediment, stream water, and groundwater were analyzed for approximately 25 parameters.

Abstract: Drainage area, slope, and mean annual precipitation were the only factors that were statistically significant at the 95-percent confidence level when the characteristics of the drainage basins were used as independent variables in a multiple-regression flood-frequency analysis of natural, unregulated streams in Texas. The State was divided into six regions on the basis of the distribution of the residuals from a single statewide regression of the 10-year flood. Equations were developed for predicting the magnitude of floods with recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years in each of the six regions. These equations are applicable to unregulated rural streams with drainage basins ranging in area from 0.3 square mile to about 5,000 square miles in some regions. Regression equations were not developed for several areas, particularly in south Texas, because of the lack of definition of the flood-frequency characteristics.
