The Moraines of the Missouri Coteau, and their Attendant Deposits (open access)

The Moraines of the Missouri Coteau, and their Attendant Deposits

Introduction: It seems important that several general facts should be stated for the full understanding of terms used and allusions made in this report. The field considered is the region lying between the Missouri and James rivers, and between the latitudes of Jamestown, N. Dak., and Huron, S. Dak. 1. As has been stated in papers published by Chamberlin, Upham, myself, and others, several more or less distinct moraines have been observed in the Mississippi Valley. It has been found convenient to distinguish the outermost three by special names. President Chamberlin has named them, beginning with the outermost, Altamont, Gary, and Antelope moraines, from localities south of Big Stone Lake, and these names have been quite generally adopted. Upham and others have named them the First, Second, and Third, and as the outermost two are the more prominent, they have also been called the Outer and Inner moraines. Each of these, especially the First and Second, has subordinate divisions, which mark the borders of the different lobes into which the margin of the ice sheet was often divided. 2.) It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the generally recognized features of drift formations, such as the undulating topography …

North Dakota Lignite as a Fuel for Power-Plant Boilers (open access)

North Dakota Lignite as a Fuel for Power-Plant Boilers

From Introduction: "The tests described in the following report were made by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the United States Reclamation Service, which, in connection with its Williston project, had erected a large pumping plant at Williston, N. Dak., and had installed steam boilers with furnaces designed to burn a "brown lignite" that was mined on adjacent government land. The results of the tests made at Williston, set forth in this report, show that this fuel, through generally considered unsatisfactory, may be used with fair economy under boilers that generate their full rated capacity."

A Lower Lance Florule from Harding County, South Dakota (open access)

A Lower Lance Florule from Harding County, South Dakota

From page 127: For the last few years Mr. Henry E. Lee, of Rapid City, S.Dak., has been sending me selected material from the lower part of the Lance formation of Harding County, S.Dak., the exact locality being what is locally known as the Jump Off, an erosion basin of the headwaters of the South Fork of the Grand River, 10 miles north of the East Short Pine Hills. 1 The matrix is a soft gray friable sandstone, and consequently only the coarser, more resistant plants are preserved. In view of the coarseness of the matrix the preservation is excellent, although usually the finer details of venation are obscure. In the sands overlying the plant beds are thin seams of impure lignite.
