Backwater and Discharge at Highway Crossing with Multiple Bridges in Louisiana and Mississippi (open access)

Backwater and Discharge at Highway Crossing with Multiple Bridges in Louisiana and Mississippi

Purpose and Scope: The principal objective of this project was to measure the backwater and discharge distribution for multiple bridges. These data have been used to determine if the methods developed by Schneider and others (1976) for single-opening highway crossings could be applied to multiple bridges. In addition, the method developed by Tracey and Carter (1955) and Cragwall (1958) was modified to use the procedure proposed by Schneider and others (1976) to calculate friction losses in the approach reach. This modified procedure was then also tested.

Base Flow of Streams in the Outcrop Area of Southeastern Sand Aquifer: South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi (open access)

Base Flow of Streams in the Outcrop Area of Southeastern Sand Aquifer: South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi

From purpose and scope: The purpose of this study are to derive base flow estimates for representative parts of the Cretaceous and Tertiary clastic outcrop area as an aid in estimating recharge to the sand aquifers; to use base flow relations to estimate aquifer hydraulic parameters; and to relate the lithology of the aquifer to the streamflow duration curves.

The Jackson Gas Field, Hinds and Rankin Counties, Mississippi (open access)

The Jackson Gas Field, Hinds and Rankin Counties, Mississippi

From abstract: The Jackson gas field, in Hinds and Rankin Counties, Miss., is in the eastern Gulf Coastal Plain, about 160 miles north of New Orleans and 40 miles, east of the Mississippi River at Vicksburg. The gas is produced from a Cretaceous chalk from 2,088 to 2,236 feet below sea level. Overlying the chalk is the regular sequence of Tertiary rocks found in Mississippi. On the crest of the anticline in the city of Jackson the Cockfield formation of the Claiborne group is exposed, surrounded by the Jackson formation. Some Forest Hill sand of the Vicksburg group is exposed in the northwestern part of the area described. Overlapping these formations are Pliocene and Pleistocene terrace and alluvial deposits, and the entire area is covered by a blanket of less of varying thickness.

The Miocene Aquifer System in Mississippi (open access)

The Miocene Aquifer System in Mississippi

From introduction: A large amount of information is available on the aquifers of Mississippi. Reports resulting from various areal studies have described the ground-water resources of the areas concerned, but no reports dealing specifically with statewide occurrence of individual aquifer systems have been prepared previously. A series of "aquifer atlases" was deemed the most effective way to point out the character, the potential, and the extent of development of the aquifers and thereby provide water managers with data needed for efficient utilization of available resources. This report on Miocene aquifer system is the first in the series.

Preliminary Report of the Geohydrology Near Cypress Creek and Richton Salt Domes, Perry County, Mississippi (open access)

Preliminary Report of the Geohydrology Near Cypress Creek and Richton Salt Domes, Perry County, Mississippi

From purpose and scope: This report describes geohydrologic conditions in the Mississippi salt-dome basin in the area of the Cypress Creek and Richton salt domes. It incorporates data from the area characterization investigations in Mississippi and provides a foundation of technical information for subsequent, more detailed hydrologic investigations.

Preliminary Report on the Stratigraphy of the Park City and Phosphoria Formations and an Analysis of the Distribution of Phosphate in Utah

"The Purpose of this paper is to present a preliminary discussion of the stratigraphy of the park city and phosphoric formations with special emphasis on the phosphatic parts and to discuss the distribution of phosphate in Utah. The Mississippian deposits are discussed only briefly because of the lack of new data concerning them"

The Southern Hills Regional Aquifer System of Southeastern Louisiana and Southwestern Mississippi

From purpose and scope: The purposes of the investigation were to develop from available information (1) a description of the regional aquifer system serving as a public supply in the Capital Area Ground Water Conservation Commission district, the Florida Parishes of southwestern Mississippi; and (2) to discuss potential alternative sources of freshwater.

U.S. Geological Survey Research in Radioactive Waste Disposal--Fiscal Year 1981 (open access)

U.S. Geological Survey Research in Radioactive Waste Disposal--Fiscal Year 1981

Abstract: The report summarizes progress on geologic and hydrologic research related to the disposal of radioactive wastes. The research is described according to whether it is related most directly to (1) high-level and transuranic wastes; (2) low-level wastes, or (3) uranium mill tailings. Included is research applicable to the identification and geohydrologic characterization of waste-disposal sites, to investigations of specific sites where wastes have been stored, and to studies of regions or environments where waste-disposal sites might be located. A significant part of the activity is concerned with techniques and methods for characterizing disposal sites and studies of geologic and hydrologic processes related to the transport and (or) retention of waste radionuclides.
