From introduction: In this study on raw material sources of uranium the Southern Interstate Nuclear Board has catalogued all known occurrences of uranium and some references to thorium in a 17-state area (P1. 1). These occurrences have been evaluated as potential sources of uranium by the State Geological Surveys and the consultant group of SINB. Favorability guides have been applied to the known occurrences and recommendations have been made for future action by the states involved, federal agencies, or by industry. State recommendations are included in state-by-state summaries. The state reports were written either by personnel of the State Geological Surveys or were abstracted from State geological survey data by members of the consultant group...The purpose of this study was to compile information on and systematically assess uranium and other radioactive occurrences in the region. The SINB undertook the project because of its statutory, interstate capability as an extension of government in each of the 17 states, an arrangement that lends itself effectively to this cooperative undertaking.

Maps are presented of the Tertiary surface on which the alluvial aquifer rests as well as the geology of this surface and the areas where hydrologic recharge to the alluvial aquifer may occur. A set of piezometric-surface maps, together with hydrographs of observation wells, river stages, precipitation rates, and data on the hydrologic properties of the alluvium, makes it possible to calculate changes which take place in the aquifer. Further data are presented on the chemical quality of groundwater. The relevance of these data to engineering problems is discussed" (p. ix).

Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) are known to be produced as a byproduct of hydrocarbon production in Mississippi. The presence of NORM has resulted in financial losses to the industry and continues to be a liability as the NORM-enriched scales and scale encrusted equipment is typically stored rather than disposed of. Although the NORM problem is well known, there is little publically available data characterizing the hazard. This investigation has produced base line data to fill this informational gap. A total of 329 NORM-related samples were collected with 275 of these samples consisting of brine samples. The samples were derived from 37 oil and gas reservoirs from all major producing areas of the state. The analyses of these data indicate that two isotopes of radium ({sup 226}Ra and {sup 228}Ra) are the ultimate source of the radiation. The radium contained in these co-produced brines is low and so the radiation hazard posed by the brines is also low. Existing regulations dictate the manner in which these salt-enriched brines may be disposed of and proper implementation of the rules will also protect the environment from the brine radiation hazard. Ground-water and surface-water samples collected in the vicinity of Tatum salt dome, Mississippi, a U.S. Atomic Energy Commission project test site, has been analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey as part of the evaluation program after the Salmon Event. Samples were collected from wells of all types of construction and at distances of 1 to 5 miles from the dome.

From abstract: Prototype tests were conducted to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the 84-ft-lift Bay Springs Lock. The evaluation included analysis of the operating characteristics and hydraulic efficiency of the lock as well as a comparison of the physical and analytical model results with the prototype.
