Bioreactor Landfill Research and Demonstration Project Northern Oaks Landfill, Harrison, MI (open access)

Bioreactor Landfill Research and Demonstration Project Northern Oaks Landfill, Harrison, MI

A bioreactor landfill cell with 1.2-acre footprint was constructed, filled, operated, and monitored at Northern Oaks Recycling and Disposal Facility (NORDF) at Harrison, MI. With a filled volume of 74,239 cubic yards, the cell contained approximately 35,317 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) and 20,777 tons of cover soil. It was laid on the slope of an existing cell but separated by a geosynthetic membrane liner. After the cell reached a design height of 60 feet, it was covered with a geosynthetic membrane cap. A three-dimensional monitoring system to collect data at 48 different locations was designed and installed during the construction phase of the bioreactor cell. Each location had a cluster of monitoring devices consisting of a probe to monitor moisture and temperature, a leachate collection basin, and a gas sampling port. An increase in moisture content of the MSW in the bioreactor cell was achieved by pumping leachate collected on-site from various other cells, as well as recirculation of leachate from the bioreactor landfill cell itself. Three types of leachate injection systems were evaluated in this bioreactor cell for their efficacy to distribute pumped leachate uniformly: a leachate injection pipe buried in a 6-ft wide horizontal stone mound, …

Greens Creek Uranium Occurrence, Marquette County, Michigan (open access)

Greens Creek Uranium Occurrence, Marquette County, Michigan

From abstract: Metatorbernite and bassetite are present in altered carbonaceous and quartzose slate of probable upper Huronian age. The slate is part of a small inlier of Huronian rocks between the Gwinn iron district to the southeast and the Marquette iron district to the northwest, Marquette County, Mich. Samples taken from a shallow trench, which was dug in the area of highest radioactivity, contained as much as 0.68 percent uranium. A 4-foot channel sample of the slate contained 0.036 percent uranium.

Aerial Gamma Ray and Magnetic Survey, Final Report. Volume 1: Rice Lake Quadrangle (Wisconsin), Iron Mountain Quadrangle (Wisconsin/Michigan), Eau Claire Quadrangle (Wisconsin/Minnesota), and Green Bay Quadrangle (Wisconsin)

A high sensitivity airborne radiometric and magnetic survey of the Rice Like, Iron Mountain, Eau Claire and Green Bay 1:250,000 NMTS Quadrangles within the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. A total of 10,340 line miles of high sensitivity radiometric and magnetic data were collected within these quadrangles. Traverse lines were flown at a spacing of 3.125 miles in an east/west direction at a 18.375 miles seperation. All data were collected utilizing a fixed wing aircraft and over 3,500 cubic inches of Nal crystal detector. Magnetometer data were collected utilizing a high sensitivity proton magnetometer. Data were recorded digitally at 1.0 second intervals aboard the aircraft. Navigation was performed using both visual and doppler techniques. All data presented in this report as corrected profiles of all radiometric variables, magnetic data, radar and barometric altimeter data, air temperature and airborne bismuth contributions. Radiometric data presented are corrected for Comptron Scatter, altitude dependence and atmospheric Bismuth. These data are also presented on microfiche, and digital magnetic tapes. In addition, anomaly maps and inerpretation maps are presented in relating known geology or soil distribution to the corrected radiometric magnetic data.
