Statistical data and areal distributions for uranium and uranium-related variables are presented for 564 groundwater and 532 stream sediment samples. From abstract: Results of a reconnaissance geochemical survey of the Lincoln Quadrangle are reported. Field and laboratory data are presented for 577 groundwater and 754 stream sediment samples. Statistical and areal distributions of uranium and possible uranium-related variables are displayed. A generalized geologic map of the survey area is provided, and pertinent geologic factors which may be of significance in evaluating the potential for uranium mineralization are briefly discussed.

From purpose and scope: The objectives of this cooperative investigation between the U.S. Geological Survey and Southwest Kansas Groundwater Management District No. 3 were (1) to update and interpret geologic and hydrologic information affecting the Ogallala aquifer in Ford County, and (2) to evaluate hydrologic conditions in the Ogallala aquifer in Ford County during 1980 and 1981.

From introduction: The purpose of this report is to summarize the events that led to the flooding in and around Great Bend, Kansas, to present a summary of estimated damages resulting from the storm, and to document the magnitude and frequency of the measured peak discharges. The report was prepared in cooperation with the Kansas Department of Transportation. From introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey is currently conducting a two-phase investigation designed to provide hydrologic information about the coal-producing area in Miami, Linn, and Bourbon Counties of eastern Kansas (fig. 1). This report presents information to satisfy the objectives of the first phase of the investigation. These objectives are to: (1) assemble and interpret existing hydrologic data; (2) describe the physical and hydrologic environments based on existing data; and (3) determine additional data needed to evaluate the impacts of coal mining on the hydrology of the study area.

From abstract: The High Plains Regional Aquifer System Analysis study has developed a regional water-resources (and related) data storage and retrieval system to organize and preserve areal interpretive data. The system is general and can easily be adapted for other studies. This report documents the High Plains data base as well as the general system that is independent of the High Plains area.

Report describing a study to use remote-sensing techniques to look for relationships between disturbances of the land, water, and vegetation with underground coal mines in the Cherry Creek basin of Kansas. The study looked at color and color-infared photographs, compared with water-quality data to successfully identify contamination and other potential problems.

Abstract: Uranium resources of the Lamar Quadrangle, Colorado and Kansas, were evaluated using National Uranium Resource Evaluation criteria. The environment favorable for uranium is the Lower Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone in the area east of John Martin Reservoir for south Texas roll-type sandstone deposits. Carbonaceous trash and sulfides are abundant in the Dakota Sandstone. The unit underlies a thick Upper Cretaceous section that contains bentonitic beds and uraniferous marine black shale. Water samples from the Dakota Sandstone aquifer contain as much as 122 parts per billion Uranium-3 Oxygen-8. Geologic units considered unfavorable include most of the Paleozoic rocks, except in the Brandon Fault area; the Upper Cretaceous rocks; and the Ogallala Formation. The Dockum Group, Morrison Formation, and Lytle Member of the Purgatoire Formation are unevaluated because of lack of data.

From Introduction: "The La Junta Quadrangle, Colorado and Kansas (Fig. 1), was evaluated to identify and delineate areas and geologic units to a depth of 1500 m (5,000 ft) that exhibit characteristics favorable for the occurrence of uranium deposits, which could contain at least 100 tons U3O8 and have an average grade of not less than 100 ppm U3O8."

From purpose and scope: The purposes of this investigation were to: (1) establish a data base for water-quality and fluvial-sediment characteristics of selected streams that will serve as a basis for documenting current (1982) conditions, (2) develop relationships between streamflow or specific conductance and water-quality characteristics that can be used to describe water-quality characteristics and determine discharges of dissolved solids, and (3) develop relationships between streamflow and suspended sediment that can be used to determine suspended sediment discharges of streams in the study area.

Abstract: A computer model was developed to calculate the drawdown, due to a proposed well, at all existing wells in the section of the proposed well and at all wells in the adjacent eight sections. The depletion expected in the 9-square-mile area due to all existing wells and the proposed well is computed and compared with allowable limits defined by the Southwest Kansas Groundwater Management District No. 3. An optional program permits the evaluation of allowable depletion for one or more townships. All options are designed to run interactively, thus allowing for immediate evaluation of proposed ground-water withdrawals.

From introduction: This report describes the results of 1980 sampling of ground-water pumpage for irrigation on the High Plains, one phase of the High Plains Regional Aquifer-System Analysis project. These data were collected to estimate the volume of irrigation water pumped during 1980 and to determine current trends in irrigation pumpage on the High Plains.

From purpose and scope of study: The purpose of this study was to improve flood-frequency estimates for small watersheds, generally those less than 10 square miles in size, using short-term observed and long-term synthesized data.
