Hydrologic Relations Between Lakes and Aquifers in a Recharge Area near Orlando, Florida (open access)

Hydrologic Relations Between Lakes and Aquifers in a Recharge Area near Orlando, Florida

Abstract: The three lakes investigated gain water- from adjoining water-table aquifer and lose water to Floridan aquifer by downward leakage. Net seepage (net exchange of water between lake and aquifers) can be estimated by equation S = AX + BY, where S is net seepage, X represents hydraulic gradient between lake and water-table aquifer, A is lumped parameter representing effect of hydaulic conductivity and cross-sectional area of materials in flow section of water-table aquifer, Y is head difference between lake level and potentiometric surface of Floridan aquifer, and B is lumped parameter representing effect of hydraulic conductivity, area, and thickness of materials between lake bottom and Floridan aquifer. If values of S, X, and Y are available for two contrasting water-level conditions, coefficients A and B are determinable by solution of two simultaneous equations. If the relation between lake- and ground-water level is same on all sides of the lake with regard to each aquifer and if X and Y are truly representative of these relations, then X and Y terms of equation provide valid estimates of inflow to lake from water-table aquifer and outflow from lake to Floridan aquifer.

Large-Scale Operations Management Test of Use of the White Amur for Control of Problem Aquatic Plants, Report 2: First Year Poststocking Results, Volume 2: The Fish, Mammals, and Waterfowl of Lake Conway, Florida (open access)

Large-Scale Operations Management Test of Use of the White Amur for Control of Problem Aquatic Plants, Report 2: First Year Poststocking Results, Volume 2: The Fish, Mammals, and Waterfowl of Lake Conway, Florida

Abstract: "Fish, waterfowl and wading birds, and aquatic mammal populations on Lake Conway were surveyed for 1 year after the introduction of the herbivorous fish, white amur (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Low water levels reduced littoral zone area, which lead to stunted panfish and poorer condition of largemouth bass. Vegetated samples supported more diverse fish populations than beach sites. White amur and migratory waterfowl consumed the same plant foods; continued reduction of submerged plants by white amur may adversely affect overwintering waterfowl populations. Aquatic mammals were influenced by removal of vegetation due to shoreline development."

Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN) Homeporting at Mayport: Background and Issues for Congress (open access)

Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN) Homeporting at Mayport: Background and Issues for Congress

On January 14, 2009, the Navy announced that it wants to transfer one of its nuclear-powered aircraft carriers (CVNs) to the Navy home port at Mayport, FL, known formally as Naval Station (NAVSTA) Mayport. The Navy's proposed FY2010 budget requests $46.3 million in Military Construction (MilCon) funding for channel dredging at Mayport. The Navy states that a key reason it wants to transfer a CVN to Mayport is to hedge against the risk of a catastrophic event that could damage the Navy's CVN homeporting facilities at Norfolk, VA, and nearby Newport News, VA. This report discusses potential questions for Congress to consider related to budget appropriations for such a transfer, the potential negative economic effects that a CVN transfer would have on the local homeport, and the other general questions regarding the Navy.

Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN) Homeporting at Mayport: Background and Issues for Congress

This report provides background information and issues for Congress on the Navy's proposal to homeport a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier (CVN) at Mayport, FL. Transferring a CVN from Norfolk, VA, to Mayport would shift from Norfolk to Mayport the local economic activity associated with homeporting a CVN, which some sources estimate as being worth hundreds of millions of dollars per year.

Origins and Distribution of Saline Ground Waters in the Floridian Aquifer in Coastal Southwest Florida (open access)

Origins and Distribution of Saline Ground Waters in the Floridian Aquifer in Coastal Southwest Florida

From introduction: Recognizing the need for comprehensive information about these waters of variable quality, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Southwest Florida Water Management District, investigated their character and distribution in the Mansota and lower Peace Basins (fig. 1). This report presents the results of the study. Principal objectives were to: (1) develop a better understanding of areal water-quality variations, and (2) relate the information developed to the extant concepts of the areal geohydrologic system.
