Hydrogeology of a Landfill, Pinellas County, Florida (open access)

Hydrogeology of a Landfill, Pinellas County, Florida

Abstract: The Pinellas County landfill site is on a flat, coastal area characterized by a nearsurface water table. Part of the site is subject to tidal flooding; altitudes within the study area range from 8 to 12 feet above sea level. Three geohydrologic units underlie the landfill site. In descending order, these are: a surficial aquifer about 19 feet thick composed of sand and shell, a confining bed about 35 feet thick composed of marl and clay, and the Floridan aquifer composed of limestone. Landfill operations have not altered surface-water quality. Although leachate movement downward into the Floridan _aquifer is not indicated, vertical movement through the confining bed is about 0.005 foot per year. The rate of lateral movement of ground-water away from the site is about 1.2 feet per year; . however, the rate of movement along the boundary from the oldest section of the landfill through the surficial aquifer is about 20 feet per year. Peaks in concentration of selected chemical parameters and flow-rate analysis of water from trenches indicate the possibility of intermittent release of leachate from the landfill.

Municipal Solid-Waste Disposal and Ground-Water Quality in a Coastal Environment, West-Central Florida (open access)

Municipal Solid-Waste Disposal and Ground-Water Quality in a Coastal Environment, West-Central Florida

From introduction: This report explains how landfills can affect ground-water resources in a coastal environment. The report defines solid waste and briefly describes the four common methods for its disposal. The landfill method used in coastal west-central Florida is described in detail. It also presents hydrologic and geologic factors to be considered when locating landfills in a coastal environment and describes how to plan a water-quality monitoring program at a landfill site. Examples from other studies of the impact of landfills on ground water in coastal areas of west-central Florida are included.

Selected Flow Characteristics of Florida Streams and Canals (open access)

Selected Flow Characteristics of Florida Streams and Canals

Abstract: This report contains data and statistics on low-flow frequency for 254 stream-gagins stations on Florida streams and canals. The selected stations have 10 or more years of continuous record. A site description, a 10-year hydrograph, and a table of flow duration are presented for each station. A computed monthly 7-day, 10-year low flow is presented for stations when flow is not significantly altered by dams, increased or decreased significantly by diversion, or influence by tides.

Chemical, Physical, and Radiological Quality of Selected Public Water Supplies in Florida, January-May 1979 (open access)

Chemical, Physical, and Radiological Quality of Selected Public Water Supplies in Florida, January-May 1979

Abstract: Most public water supplies sampled in Florida meet the National Interim Primary and Proposed Secondary Drinking Water Regulations. This conclusion is based on a water quality reconnaissance of 131 raw and treated public supplies throughout the State during the period January through May 1979. In a few public supplies, primary drinking water regulation maximum contaminant levels were exceeded for mercury, turbidity, and gross alpha particle activity. Secondary drinking water regulations were also occasionally exceeded in some public supplies for such parameters as chloride, pH, color, dissolved solids, iron, and manganese. These parameters, however, are more related to the aesthetic quality of drinking water than to public health aspects.

Large-Scale Operations Management Test of Use of the White Amur for Control of Problem Aquatic Plants, Report 2: First Year Poststocking Results, Volume 2: The Fish, Mammals, and Waterfowl of Lake Conway, Florida (open access)

Large-Scale Operations Management Test of Use of the White Amur for Control of Problem Aquatic Plants, Report 2: First Year Poststocking Results, Volume 2: The Fish, Mammals, and Waterfowl of Lake Conway, Florida

Abstract: "Fish, waterfowl and wading birds, and aquatic mammal populations on Lake Conway were surveyed for 1 year after the introduction of the herbivorous fish, white amur (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Low water levels reduced littoral zone area, which lead to stunted panfish and poorer condition of largemouth bass. Vegetated samples supported more diverse fish populations than beach sites. White amur and migratory waterfowl consumed the same plant foods; continued reduction of submerged plants by white amur may adversely affect overwintering waterfowl populations. Aquatic mammals were influenced by removal of vegetation due to shoreline development."
