This report presents a summary of trade negotiations and the proposed U.S.-Panama free trade agreement (FTA). The proposed U.S.-Panama FTA is a comprehensive agreement. Some 88% of U.S. commercial and industrial exports would become duty-free upon implementation, with remaining tariffs phased out over a 10-year period.

Some Engineering Problems of the Panama Canal in Their Relation to Geology and Topography

Mineral Deposits of Central America
From introduction: This report is based on investigations carried on by the Geological Survey (U. S. Department of the Interior) under the auspices of the Interdepartmental Committee on Scientific and Cultural Cooperation (U. S. Department of State) and the Foreign Economic Administration. The function of the last two agencies is presently carried on by the International Cooperation Administration. Roberts is responsible for the text of this report and for the compilation of the geologic map. He was in Central America from January to April 1942 under a program of scientific and technical cooperation with the American Republics sponsored by the Department of State, and mapped manganese deposits in Costa Rica and manganese and antimony deposits in Honduras.

Panama: Political and Economic Conditions and U.S. Relations
The Central American nation of Panama has made notable political and economic progress since the 1989 U.S. military intervention that ousted General Manuel Noriega from power. Under the current administration of President Martin Torrijos, the most significant challenges have included dealing with the funding deficits of the country's social security fund; developing plans for the expansion of the Panama Canal; and combating unemployment and poverty. The United States has close relations with Panama. The current bilateral relationship is characterized by extensive cooperation on counternarcotics efforts, assistance to help Panama assure the security of the Canal and its border with Colombia, and negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement.
