Reflection of Electrons by a Model Magnetic Mirror Machine (open access)

Reflection of Electrons by a Model Magnetic Mirror Machine

Abstract: A visualized electron beam has been reflected by a conventional magnetic mirror. Visualization of the beam path from the electron gun to and including the region of reflection was achieved by the "thread ray" technique of Wehnelt. The total current passing through a magnetic mirror has been measured as a function of the beam energy and angular momentum for Hâ‚‚ over a range of pressures from 0.5 to 5 microns.

Notes Pertaining to Recuplex Product Evaporation (open access)

Notes Pertaining to Recuplex Product Evaporation

A red-brown liquid formed during the evaporation of simulated Recuplex product solutions containing plutonium, nitric acid, carbon tetrachloride, and tributyl phosphate (TBP). The liquid is soluble in carbon tetrachloride. Concentration of solutions containing a TBP to plutonyl nitrate weight ratio of 0.15 or greater to a pot temperature of 150 deg C caused reactions which produced enough heat to bring the pot contents to a red heat with copious evolution of gases. Evaporation path curves and boiling point data were obtained from batch evaporations with minimum reflux and are presented. Polymeric plutonium(IV) was formed upon concentrating plutonium nitrate solutions of low nitric acid content. The region of polymer formation was defined and is presented. (auth)

Starting characteristics and combustion performance of magnesium slurry in 6.5-inch-diameter ram-jet engine mounted in connected-pipe facility (open access)

Starting characteristics and combustion performance of magnesium slurry in 6.5-inch-diameter ram-jet engine mounted in connected-pipe facility

The starting characteristics and combustion performance of slurry type fuels, consisting of 50 percent magnesium powder in a hydrocarbon carrier, have been investigated in a flight-type, 6.5-inch-diameter ram-jet engine in a connected-pipe facility. Quick, dependable starting of the engine was obtained by the use of a disk which blocked part of the combustor area downstream of the flame holder. Acceptable performance was achieved with a short fuel-air mixing length by the development of a fuel-distribution control sleeve.

Preliminary Investigation of the Performance of a Single Tubular Combustor at Pressure Up to 12 Atmospheres (open access)

Preliminary Investigation of the Performance of a Single Tubular Combustor at Pressure Up to 12 Atmospheres

"The effects of combustor operation at conditions representative of those encountered in high pressure-ratio turbojet engines or at high flight speeds on carbon deposition, exhaust smoke, and combustion efficiency were studied in a single tubular combustor. Carbon deposition and smoke formation tests were conducted over a range of combustor-inlet pressures from 33 to 173 pounds per square inch absolute and combustor reference velocities from 78 to 143 feet per second. Combustion efficiency tests were conducted over a range of pressures from 58 to 117 pounds per square inch absolute and velocities from 89 to 172 feet per second" (p. 1).

Experimental Evidence of Sustained Coupled Longitudinal and Lateral Oscillations From a Rocket-Propelled Model of a 35 Degree Swept Wing Airplane Configuration

Memorandum presenting a rocket-propelled model of a representative 35 degree sweptback wing airplane design at high subsonic Mach numbers to investigate the possibility of the existence of coupled longitudinal and lateral motions. The data indicate the existence of sustained longitudinal motions of appreciable amplitude forced by lateral oscillations. The longitudinal motions had twice the frequency of the lateral oscillations and are shown to be the result of aerodynamic moments due to sideslip and inertial cross coupling.

Uranium Recovery From Composite UF$sub 4$ Reduction Bomb Wastes (open access)

Uranium Recovery From Composite UF$sub 4$ Reduction Bomb Wastes

A number of techniques have been investigated on a laboratory-scale for separating uranium from fluorides during the recovery of uranium from UF4 reduction bomb wastes (C-oxide) by an HCl leach - NH4OH precipitation process. Among these are included adsorption of fluorides from filtered leach liquors, fractional precipitation of fluorides and uranium, complexing of fluorides into forms soluble in slightly acid solutions, and fluoride volatilization from the uranium concentrate. Solubility studies of CaF2 and MgF2 in aqueous hydrochloric acid at various acidities and temperatures were also conducted. A description of the production-scale processing of C-oxide in the FMPC scrap plant has been included.

Aerosol Collection by Wetted Fiberglass Media (open access)

Aerosol Collection by Wetted Fiberglass Media

A wet collection system for aerosols has been developed using fibrous media. Tests show the performance to be in accord with recently developed theory of collection by fibrous media. The effects of varying aerosol particle size, particle density, and gas velocity have indicated that inertial impaction is the primary collection mechanism. Three-year operating experience on several full scale plant installations shows reliable performance.

Flame Quenching by a Variable-Width Rectangular-Slot Burner as a Function of Pressure for Various Propane-Oxygen-Nitrogen Mixtures (open access)

Flame Quenching by a Variable-Width Rectangular-Slot Burner as a Function of Pressure for Various Propane-Oxygen-Nitrogen Mixtures

"Flame quenching by a variable-width rectangular-slot burner as a function of pressure for various propane-oxygen-nitrogen mixtures was investigated. It was found that for cold gas temperatures of 27 degrees C, pressures of 0.1 or 1.0 atmosphere, and volumetric oxygen reactions of the oxidant of 0.17, 0.21, 0.30, 0.50, and 0.70, the relation between pressure p and quenching distance d is approximately given by d (unity) p (superscript -r) with r = 1, for equivalence ratios approximately equal to one. The quenching equation of Simon and Belles was tested" (p. 1).

Experimental investigation of effect of high-aspect-ratio rotor blades on performance of conservatively designed turbine (open access)

Experimental investigation of effect of high-aspect-ratio rotor blades on performance of conservatively designed turbine

"A considerable weight reduction in the turbine wheel of an aircraft gas turbine is attained through the use of high-aspect-ratio rotor blading. An experimental investigation was made to compare the performance of a turbine of conservative aerodynamic design having shrouded rotor blades with an aspect ratio of 4.48 with that obtained from both a shrouded and an unshrouded rotor design with aspect ratio of 2.24. The use of high-aspect-ratio rotor blades had a negligible effect on the turbine efficiency" (p. 1).
