ON NUCLEAR PHYSICS LABORATORY AT CANEL. The critical experiment facility at CANEL is described. Information of the mature of experimental assemblies and operations is included. Safety features of the building, equipment, and operations are pointed out. Possible accidents and the resulting hazards to surrounding areas are analyzed. Introduction: "The uranium-5 w/o chromium alloy has been intensively investigated for use in a power reactor in the as-cast condition. However, when cast sample fuel elements were subjected to irradiation, their stability was found to be unsatisfactory. In order to improve the behavior of the alloy, a program of grain refinement by heat treatment was begun. The effect of chill casting on the heat-treated grain size was also investigated."

In view of contamination difficulties within the Redox operation, number of items are being considered to improve this situation. It is the objective of this document to list and describe seven times which it is felt would contribute most toward improvement. It is also an objective to present for RDS-D-12 Group consideration the recommendations of representatives from Manufacturing, Technical, and Design in these matters with the expectation that a project proposal written in general terms for overall contamination improvement would be prepared.

The following report describes the process of epoxy resin casting of high-voltage transformers, bushings, and potheads.

The purpose of this course is two-fold. It should serve as a review for the metallurgist of the classical metallurgical concepts applied to such metals as uranium, thorium, plutonium, and zirconium. These metals are relatively unfamiliar to the metallurgist, but the concepts are still the same ones applied to familiar metals. The second purpose is to acquaint the non-metallurgist with the reasons for selection, advantages, and disadvantages of the various fuels and structural materials used in a reactor. Thus, there are two purposes: the first is conceptual, and the second is explanatory. A blending of the two must inevitably result in an over-simplification of the metallurgical concepts and an assumption of certain background material which, actually, may not be available to the non-metallurgist. The present lecture is an introduction to the material to be covered. This lecture will have two purposes. The material to be presented in the remaining lectures will be outlined briefly, and the various concepts to be covered in this course will be discussed.

In a preceding lecture all the components necessary to secure a controlled nuclear chain reaction were discussed. The business at Hanford is to use these components in the most efficient manner possible to manufacture the desired products of irradiation - the primary product being Pu. In this lecture of the variables of such operation are considered.

Abstract: Ten days were spent during June 1955, examining the sedimentary rocks along the San Juan and Colorado Rivers between Mexican Hat, Utah, and Lee's Ferry, Arizona. The most favorable area for uranium deposits occurs in the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation between Clay Hills Crossing and Spencer Camp along the San Juan River. Mineralization is spotty and deposits are small and almost all below ore-grade. Only one small mine, the Whirlwind, is currently producing ore. Gray-green alteration of the underlying Moenkopi is moderately developed in the vicinity of the Whirlwind mine; elsewhere alteration is weakly developed.

This test consisted of a series of helium purges of the pile gas atmosphere to bring the helium content up to about 70 to 80% helium followed by a series of CO{sub 2} purges to restore the pile atmosphere to its initial composition. The purges where spaced roughly four hours apart to enable the reactor to reach a steady temperature before purge was undertaken. The test results are presented in this report.

"An investigation was made of a 1/25-scale dynamically similar model of a 255,000-pound transport airplane in order to study its behavior when ditched. The model was free-launched from the Langley tank no. 2 monorail carriage into calm water. Various landing attitudes, flap settings, speeds, and configurations were investigated" (p. 1).

Report presenting a flight program using the Northrop X-4 semitailless airplane to investigate the effect on the longitudinal and lateral stability and control of thickened elevons with trailing-edge thickness one-half the control-hinge-station thickness. The investigation consisted of speed runs, wind-up turns, abrupt rudder-fixed rolls, and longitudinal pulses between a range of Mach numbers.

Report presenting pressure distributions calculated for some symmetrical wing-body combinations at zero lift. Of particular interest is the effect of indenting the body on the distribution of pressure over the wing.

Report presenting the longitudinal stability characteristics of the Convair XF-92A delta-wing airplane in maneuvering flight. The investigation included the determination of the characteristics of the basic airplane and the effects of two wing fence configurations on the characteristics.

Report presenting dynamic longitudinal maneuvers over a range of Mach numbers at an altitude of 30,000 feet by utilizing the XF-92A delta-wing research airplane. An analysis of the dynamic responses was made with three approaches: measured period and time to damp, analogue computer simulation of the airplane time-response characteristics, and Fourier transformation. Results regarding period, time and cycles to damp, and stability derivatives with Mach number are provided.

Report presenting flight measurements of the elevon hinge moments on the Convair XF-92A delta-wing airplane over a range of Mach numbers during longitudinal elevon pulses, aileron rolls, and wind-up turns. During wind-up turns, the hinge moments become nonlinear at about the angle of attack at which the airplane experiences a marked decrease in longitudinal stability.
