Patent for a safety attachment for locomotives that is simple and prevents unwelcome people from getting into a position to take control of the train. It consists of steam pipes with open jets connected with the boiler that go around the entrances of the cab, and the train engineer can turn a valve and make hot steam project across the entrances.

Patent for improvements in cotton-presses, in which “it comprises two presser-rollers between which the cotton as it comes from the gin, is compressed, yielding bearings for one of the said presser-rollers, two guard-bars, one for each presser-roller, to prevent the cotton being carried out by the rollers, the ends of the guard–bars being threaded to receive nuts by means of which the attachment is clamped to the baling-box, and a conveyer to transfer the cotton from the gin to the said rollers.” (Lines 22-32) Illustration is included.

Patent for "new and improved machine which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and especially designed for simultaneously curving and embossing sheet-metal plates for use as cornices, metal shingles, &c" (lines 8-13).

Patent for “…a piano attachment consisting of an adjustable wrist-pin and foot-guard adapted to serve as a means for securing the proper position of the wrist and forearm in practice and also adapted to protect the front panel of the instrument and serve, with children, as a foot-rest. Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims” (lines 8-19).

Patent for a new and improved wire-stretcher. This design "has reference more particularly to that class of devices which are adapted to be applied to and removed from the wires at will" (lines 9-11). It consists in "the rigid bar, hooks . . . pivoted to the bar, and a laterally projecting arm" (lines 69-71).

Patent for a new and improved turfing implement. This design "is to produce a . . . handle . . . together with improved means for threading the needle (lines 10-12). It consists "with a tubular needle having a longitudinal slit, the outer end of the needle being open and its upper side being formed into a tongue near its inner end, which is bent upwardly and whose extremity projects into the needle, of a handle into which the needle is passed and a presser-foot adjustably connected at its inner end to the handle and having its outer end turned up and provided with an opening" (lines 85-93).

Patent for a simple, reliable, and easily operated attachment for a type-writing machine that continuously feeds paper to the type. "Several sheets, as they are printed may be severed in equal lengths, without disturbing the engagement of the continuous web with the paper-cylinder and feeding-devices" (lines 13-17).

Patent for certain new and useful improvements in wire fence supports, including instructions and illustrations.

Patent for a new and improved stump-puller. This design consists, "with the main beam, of the rigid crosstree arranged transversely of the same and provided at its end with loose casters, and a pivoted axle or tree terminating in axle-bearings and provided with wheels, and means for adjusting the pivoted crosstree with relation to the beam and rigid crosstree" (lines 11-18).

Patent for a locking device for railway-rail joints. It improves how the meeting rail ends are fastened, and prevents accidental disconnection. It is "a locking fish-plate having keyhole bolt-slots, the narrow portion of the slots having inclined sides, the inclination diminishing gradually toward the end, and double-headed bolts, one of the heads being tapered, whereby the bolt is subjected to a double wedging action" (lines 56-61). A face-plate is perforated and receives the tapered heads and securing-rivets.

Patent for "washing-machines which combine in one structure means for heating the suds-water and maintaining the same at the required temperature, a suds-box having chambered or hollow bottom and sides to secure a circulation of the suds-water independently of the agitation resulting from turning the drum or clothes-receptacle upon its axis, and a drum removably journaled in the suds-box and comprising longitudinal slats or bars having bent edge portions for scooping up the suds-water and directing the same into the drum and upon the clothes contained therein, whereby the washing process is greatly facilitated." Patent for a new and improved top-props for carriages. This design consists "[i]n combination with an arm having perforations and slot, plate provided with arm, pin, and bolt, and arms . . . secured, respectively, to the arm and the carriage-top" (lines 76-80).

Patent for a new and improved nut-lock. This design "consist[s] of a strip of metal having the looped portion adapted to embrace the bolt, and having the downwardly-bent spring portion or end forming a biting-edge, the rearwardly-extending straight portion bent upward . . . to form a bearing point or edge, which is also adapted, in conjunction with the edge to grip the fish-plate . . . the forwardly-extending straight spring portion overlapping the straight portion, the inner curved edge of which lies in the path of the edge of the nut when the latter is turned upon the bolt" (lines 76-89).

Patent for a new and improved tire tightener. This design consists in "[t]he combination, with the spokes, the felly, and the tire . . . of the plates, each provided with rearwardly-extending apertured portions, forwardly-projecting fingers, and semi-socketed portions on their lower faces, the upper face of the plate being straight, its lower face inclined, the upper face of the plate inclined, and the lower face thereof straight, whereby when said plates are fitted in place, they will wedge between the felly and the shoulder of the spoke, said socket portions adapted to fit over said shouldered portion of the spokes" (lines 8-21).

Patent for a new and improved stirrup. This design is "to provide a stirrup of simple and inexpensive construction, to form the buckle for attaching the side straps integral with the hanger in such position that the stirrup will hang at right angles to the saddle-skirts, and, further, to hinge or pivot the foot-rest at one end to the hanger and supported at its opposite end by means of a spring-controlled catch that automatically releases the foot-rest by means of a lever and prevents the rider's foot from hanging in the stirrup and the rider being dragged should he [or she] be thrown from [the] horse" (lines 17-29).

Patent for a new and useful washing machine.
