Spark-Arrester.

Patent for improvements in spark-arresters for locomotives in “which [it] will prevent the sparks and cinders from falling upon the train and upon surrounding lands and buildings;” (lines 10-12) by using a combination of a curved smoke-stack, a cinder-box, conducting pipes and an ash pen. Illustration is included.

Patent for a device used by locomotives that "will cause the smoke to be returned from the stack to the fire-box until it is entirely consumed" (lines 11-13), condenses exhaust steam, and heats the water in the tender. Includes illustrations.

Smoke and Spark Arrester and Consumer.

Patent for a new and improved smoke and spark arrester and consumer. This design consists, "in a locomotive having a transversely-divided front extension, of a box over the forward compartment, a deflector at the bottom of the box and upper part of said compartment and having its edges spaced therefrom to permit communication between the two, a stack extending upward from the rear or smoke compartment and discharging through an elbow into the top of said box, a stack leading from the top of box in front of stack and of greater diameter than the latter stack, and the pipes" (lines 24-36).
