"The invention consists of a plate in the shape of an eighth of an octagon having four sides, and a straight edge pivoted on the side plate and indicating thereon" (lines 14-17).

Patent for certain new and useful improvements in protected rail-joints.

Patent for "a combined planter and cultivator, including a cotton-chopper" (lines 11-12).

Patent for improvements in hoes, the inventor designed the handle of the hoe to carry two shanks; the shanks diverging form the handle and bent to be parallel with each other. A connecting-rod at the end of two shanks is being threaded and provided with locking-nuts, which used to secure the hoe blades. The hoe blades can be adjusted laterally. Illustration is included.

Patent for the improvement of shovel plows "to so construct and arrange the several parts of the device that they may be easily and quickly adjusted to adapt the implement to different kinds of work," (lines 17-20) including instructions and illustrations.

Patent for a railway cattle-guard meant to be used "where the track of a railroad passes between the adjacent ends of fence-sections; and the invention seeks to provide elevated pricking-points in connection with adjacent guides inclining toward such points to direct the legs of the stock to such points so the latter will prick the lags at or above the top of the hoof" (lines 9-16).

Patent for a new and improved frame for mosquito canopies. This design consists in "the combination, with the fixed standards and the forwardly-projecting bearings, of the braces pivoted to [the] bearings and united by cross-bar, the short arms pivoted to the upper ends of the fixed standards, and parallel side-bars connected by cross-bars to form a rectangular frame to support the canopy or curtain and pivoted intermediate, respectively, in the outer ends of the short arms and brace" (lines 22-31).

Patent for a marking-tag that is clamped around the edge of the merchandise that is being labeled. This tag is secure at its four corners "so as to obviate curling of the corners and to protect the ends of the fastener employed for securing the tag to the goods, whereby scratching of the hands and injurious contact of the points of the said fastener with the goods or merchandise are wholly obviated" (lines 12-18).

Patent for a simple, durable, and effective furnace that uses fuel economically and does not release smoke and gases besides out of the chimney. The furnace has a suction fan that draws the gases into the chimney.

Patent for a specialized railroad joint that has a "novel combination of a T-shaped splice rail" (lines 12-13) in combination with other parts, "connected with downwardly-curved truss-bolts passing through the vertical member of the splice-rail in such matter as to hold all of the parts firmly together..." (lines 19-23).

Patent for "a guard which will effectually prevent cattle from entering adjoining fields to which ingress is afforded by means of a railroad traversing them and to provide means for preventing the guards being injured by trains passing over the road," (lines 11-16) with instructions and illustrations.

Patent for "an automatic pilot coupling, which will enable the pilot bar of a locomotive to be coupled with a car by a brakeman while standing to the side of the locomotive out of the way of all danger, from which position he can accurately operate the device, thus doing away with all necessity for going between the moving engine and the car to which it is to be coupled." This design consists, "with the frame of the locomotive and pilot mounted thereon, of the draw-bar connected to the frame, devices for locking and holding the draw-bar on the pilot, and a counter-weight for automatically elevating the draw-bar when released" (lines 97-102).

Patent for an improved draw-bar for locomotives that consists of a frame, a pilot and draw bar, a counterweight that moves vertically in the pilot, a coupler head with a knuckle and a toe and a guide arm, and a release mechanism for the locking device on the bar.
