This design consists in "a box having its upper end open and having an outwardly-opening door at the lower portion of one side, a plunger in the box having a post provided with a braced cross-piece near the upper end, ropes secured to the ends of the cross-piece, a drum under the lower end of the box, having a helical pulley at one end and a small drum at the other end, and having the ropes secured to it and winding upon it, a rope passing over guide-pulleys above the upper end of the box and winding upon the small drum" (lines 16-28).

This design "is to produce a hay-press of simple construction that will work easily and rapidly, that will operate in such a manner that the hay cannot clog in the press, and in which the plunger or follower will be automatically reciprocated by a continuous motion of the main pulley" (lines 9-15). It consists, "with the plunger having a sideways-extending arm, a screw-shaft connected with the plunger and having a sideways-extending arm, the pinion on the screw-shaft, the shaft and pinions . . . of a tilting frame" (lines 113-118).

This design consists "[i]n a swinging gate pivoted at its lower inner end and suspended by a diagonal wire, upon which it swings in being opened and closed, the adjustable bar provided with a depending loop or staple for the suspending-wire, the point of suspension by said loop, being between the latch end of the gate and a vertical line drawn through its pivot-pin" (lines 51-58).

This design "is mounted upon a hinge-rod, which is adapted for adjustment at its upper end within a rack fixed to the top of the hinge-post and provided with a pivoted keeper for said hinge-rod, the object being to set the upper end of the hinge-rod away from the latch-post as may be required to raise the free end of the gate to take up the sag, to support the gate a sufficient height above the ground to swing free of snow, and to allow of the passage of small stock when the gate is closed" (lines 12-22).
