Seed Planter.

Patent for a new and improved planter. This design "is an improvement in the class of walking planters. It is particularly adapted for sowing cotton-seed, but will also plant corn and distribute fertilizing material. The principle feature of the invention is the construction of the seed-discharging device arranged and rotating in the bottom of the seed-hopper. The construction of the latter and the frame of the machine likewise embody novel and important features" (lines 7-16).

Device for Controlling Runaway Horses.

Patent for a new and improved device for controlling runaway horses. This design has for its object "to construct an apparatus whereby such a pressure may be applied by the rider or driver of the animal in connection with which the apparatus is employed, the invention consisting of pads that are supported by lever-arms pivotally connected to a bit, and of a means whereby said pads may be moved toward each other—that is, to a position so that they will bear upon the outer nostril-wall . . . [since horses] may be quickly subdued by bringing continued pressure to bear upon their noses" (lines 9-21).

This design, "for automatically exhibiting business cards and the like, of a panel having an opening therein, uprights having the retaining guides secured on each side of said opening, the angle-irons secured beneath said opening, a longitudinally-inclined bar having a beveled upper edge provided with a recess for extending across said panel, a sliding frame having a spring secured thereto, a hook on said spring, and means for giving said frame a vibratory or reciprocating movement" (lines 11-22).

This design consists in "a strap, ring, or belt surrounding the muzzle of the calf or other animal, and attached permanently by means of head-stall straps or other suitable-devices, the muzzle-ring being provided with radiating blunt-pointed wires of suitable length, whereby the calf is prevented from reaching the teat, and the mother, being irritated or titillated by the projecting wires, repulses the attempts of the animal to suckle" (lines 18-27).
