The chief usefulness of the bulletin is in its discussion of practical problems. There is a section on the style of cages and their sanitation. Detailed information is given concerning bathing, molt, and food, including the feeding of special foods for deepening the color of the birds. One chapter shows the possibility of breeding canaries in captivity and is designed as an aid to this. The concluding pages deal with the health of the birds. Methods of ridding them of vermin are set forth, as well as instructions for caring for fractured legs and wings, and for the treatment of respiratory and intestinal diseases and of such ailments as loss of feathers. This report discusses the sugar beet nematode (a parasite also known as the roundworm, threadworm, or eelworm) and measures for controlling it.

"For 50 years new settlers from the East[of the United States] have attempted to grow corn in the semiarid West. The seed used and the methods employed were often those with which the settlers had had experience in the East. They were not adapted to western conditions, and many failures resulted... It is the purpose of this bulletin to show in a general way some of the causes of these failures and how failures may be made less frequent or less intense. Particular varieties of corn and particular methods of cultivation are not applicable to the whole of any large area. Nevertheless, there are certain fundamental requirements of moisture, heat, and fertility which everywhere govern corn yields. A change in the supply of one may make a change in another advisable. Thus, the moisture requirement varies with the amount of heat available. In short, the secret of successful corn culture is to maintain a proper balance of moisture, heat, and fertility." -- title page

This report discusses the cultivation of Sea Island cotton, which is a variety of cotton that differs from Upland cotton and is commonly grown in Florida, South Carolina, and southern Georgia. It is related to and resembles Egyptian cotton. Topics discussed include fertility, land preparation, seed selection, and diseases of Sea Island cotton.

"Shade trees, shrubs, and hedges, and in particular evergreens, are much subject to injury by a caterpillar which has a curious habit of crawling about on the infested trees in a baglike case, whence its common name of bagworm or basket worm. In the shelter of these cases the insects undergo all their transformation, after which the bags remain attached to the plants for some time and are conspicuous objects on leafless trees and shrubs in late autumn and in winter." -- title page. The bagworm's diet, life cycle, habits, and natural enemies are discussed, but most of the report's discussion concerns control measures.

This report discusses the habits of cottontail rabbits and means for controlling their populations in order to protect farm crops and trees. In addition to the rabbit's natural enemies and diseases, effective means of control include hunting, trapping, poisoning, and fences.

"This bulletin contains information and suggestions for persons desiring to sell or buy produce by parcel post. A great deal of marketing has been and is now being done by this method. Many persons, however, are only partially informed or perhaps entirely unaware of the requirements necessary to market farm produce successfully in this manner.... The increased cost of living has caused many persons to look to securing produce by parcel post as a means of relief, and some have been disappointed because of unsatisfactory results arising from various causes.... The present bulletin contains general information [with regard to prices, packaging, and quality standards]...which should be of use to those producers and consumers who are interested in the more general phases of the subject." -- title page
