Sanitary Engineering Aspects of Long-Range Fallout from Nuclear Detonations (open access)

Sanitary Engineering Aspects of Long-Range Fallout from Nuclear Detonations

From abstract: Results of a study of the sanitary engineering aspects of fallout from nuclear weapons are reported. Data were obtained from: a. Weekly surface water samples from 22 stations on streams and reservoirs in Eastern Massachusetts, collected from March, 1952 to July, 1953, and assayed for radioactivity. b. Weekly rain samples from March to July, 1953. c. Stream mud and soil samples collected before and after a large fallout. d. Results of fallout activity measurements by others based on samples from Massachusetts and the vicinity of Rochester, New York. Plots are presented showing the relations of the radiological data to the timing of detonations and the daily precipitation and showing daily deposition of activity and concentration in runoff. Runoff coefficients for fallout radioactivity are calculated.

Relative Yields of Nitrogen-17 Produced by 190-Mev Deuteron Bombardment (open access)

Relative Yields of Nitrogen-17 Produced by 190-Mev Deuteron Bombardment

"Yields of N¹⁷ relative to that produced in LiF have been measured in the 190-Mev deflected deuteron and the 380-Mev alpha beams of the 184-inch synchrocyclotron. The measurements have been performed in all the light elements from 0 through V, with the exception of Sc and the noble gases. In addition, yields were measured in the separated isotopes of Mg...Comparisons are made with other types of yield studies performed with neutrons and protons, and the areas of agreement are noted."

A Two-Dimensional Model Study of Elastic Waves (open access)

A Two-Dimensional Model Study of Elastic Waves

In seismic field operations complex problems often arise which cannot be solved mathematically. In recent years investigators in both the commercial and academic fields have begun to approach the problems of elastic wave propagation by the use of seismic scale models. This thesis discusses the results measured from simulated seismic activity on a scale model built by the researcher.

Charles Ives and a Stylistic Analysis of his Three Piano Sonatas (open access)

Charles Ives and a Stylistic Analysis of his Three Piano Sonatas

This thesis has been written with several goals in mind. The first purpose has been to inform the reader about the life of Charles Ives and the influences he experienced that gave him the impetus to experiment and write music of a nature thirty years ahead of its time, while the rest of the world was basking in the waning light of Romanticism. The second purpose has been to describe in a short space general characteristics that may be found throughout the entire musical output of Ives. The third purpose has been to analyze in greater detail the major portion of his contributions to piano literature, the three piano sonatas, so that the student may better understand the complexities which will face him in performance of these compositions. Perhaps the strongest motivation for the present study has been the hope that it might induce more students to be explorers themselves and become familiar with this music of Ives.

An Occupational Therapy Curriculum Study (open access)

An Occupational Therapy Curriculum Study

In order to provide an understanding of the curricula of the colleges and universities active in the training of occupational therapists and to assist in gaining knowledge from their experience, this study attempts to analyze the training program of all these schools. The available information, as well as a resulting "connecting thread" in these different curricula, will aid any college or university that wishes to accept the challenge of the aforementioned demand in establishing an outstanding department of occupational therapy.

Preparation of Pyridinium Derivatives of 2,3-Dichloro-5(8?)-Nitro-1,4-Naphthoquinone (open access)

Preparation of Pyridinium Derivatives of 2,3-Dichloro-5(8?)-Nitro-1,4-Naphthoquinone

This paper describes the preparation of pyridine derivatives of 2,3-dichloro-5(8?)-nitro-1,4-naphthoquinone. A method for the nitration of 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone is also described. Certain 4-n-alkyl, 3,4-dialkyl, and 4-cycloalkyl pyridine derivatives are caused to undergo condensation reactions with the nitrated naphthoquinone, giving rise to a series of compounds of the preceding type (X). All of the compounds prepared will be tested for anti-tubercular activity by Parke-Davis and Company.

Strong Verbs in English (open access)

Strong Verbs in English

The purpose of this study is to give a brief history of the strong verbs in Old English and to trace their development in Middle English and in Modern English, concentrating on the last period. In Modern English two lines of development are of particular interest and importance: the confusion of children and illiterates in using strong verb forms and the treatment of strong verbs in recent grammars. It is hoped that this study will show the pertinence of these verbs and that from this study recommendations can be made as to the simplest procedure for teaching them.
