Strange-Particle Production by 1170-MeV/c pi- Mesons
Production of {Lambda} + K{sup 0}, {Sigma}{sup 0} + K{sup 0}, and {Sigma}{sup -} + K{sup +} by 1170-MeV/c {pi}{sup -} mesons has been studied in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 72-inch hydrogen bubble chamber, Cross sections, angular distributions, and polarizations are presented. The polarization of the {Sigma}{sup 0} is determined at four center-of-mass angles and found to be small everywhere. Based on published results for the reaction {pi}{sup +} + p {yields} {Sigma}{sup +}, K{sup +}, a comparison of the polarizations of {Sigma}{sup +}, {Sigma}{sup -}, and {Sigma}{sup 0} is made from the charge-independence triangle. A conclusion is reached that the {Sigma}{sup -} polarization should be large, and that the {Sigma}{sup -} and {Sigma}{sup +} polarizations should be opposite in sign.

The Effects of Musical Stimuli on the Gross Motor Activity of Profound Mental Retardates
It was the purpose of this present study to investigate the effects of two types of music, tonic and sedative, on the gross motor activity of profound mental retardates. The primary objective was to determine if therapeutic benefits resulting from the application of music could be extended to profound retardates as has already been demonstrated with other levels of retardation.

Market Power in the Common Market
This study involved an analysis of the competitive philosophy and market structures of the European Economic Community. The investigation was concerned with market power both within the EEC itself and between the EEC and its eighteen African Associates. Although the present Association is in part a vestige of the colonial era, its economic nature is closely related to the economic nature of the EEC. It was the object of this study to define these characteristics, showing how they evolved from forces concomitant with postwar recovery and integration.

Some Comparisons between Conventional College Teaching Methods and a Composite of Procedures Involving Large Lecture Groups, Seminars, and Reduced Class Time
The problem of this study was to determine the differences in achievement, critical thinking, and attitude toward subjects of junior college freshmen which could be attributed to two approaches to the teaching of English composition and American history. The purpose of the study was to yield information for use as the basis for administrative and instructional judgments concerning pupil deployment, and plant and staff utilization.

The Effects of Group Counseling upon Visual Perception and its Relationship to Other Forms of Perception
The study of perception of visual images and the influence of counseling upon them has received little if any attention. This study was designed to investigate this uncharted area and to demonstrate the effects of counseling upon visual perception. The primary function of this investigation was to seek answers to the following questions. Is it possible for group counseling to have an effect on one's perception of visual stimuli? Will a counseling experience which produces a change in a person' behavior also cause that person to perceive visual images in a different way than he perceived them before counseling? In other words, does a concomitant relationship exist between visual perception and other forms of perception?

Monte Carlo Calculations on Intranuclear Cascades
The basic assumption of the Serber model in the description of high- energy nuclear reactions is that the interactions of incident particles with complex nuclei can be described in terms of individual particle-particle collisions within the nucleus. Calculations were performed making use of the basic assumption of the Serber model, a more realistic nuclear model, recent cross-section data, and an exact statistical sampling technique. The sampling technique has not been used previously in calculations of this type. Calculations were performed for incident e (as Fe/sup 59 /sup +/, e (as Fe/sup 59 /sup -/, neutrons, and protons on nuclei from lithium to uranium. The energy range of the incident particles varied from about 50 to 350 Mev, i.e., the energy region in which pion production is not likely. Free-particle cross sections were used in determining the collisions within the nucleus, and statistical sampling techniques were used throughout, The problem was coded for the IBM-7090. Extensive comparisons with experiment were made and the results indicate that the calculation can be used to predict most of the cascade data for incident nucleons on complex nuclei, but only the gross features of the data are predictable for incident pions on nuclei. The effects …

Fission of Gold With 112-Mev C{sup 12} Ions: A Yield-Mass and Charge- Distribution Study
Fission prcduct cross sections were measured radiochemically and mass- spectrometrically for gold bombsrded with 112-Mev C/sup 12/ ions. Cross sections for 43 nuclides were measured for elements from nickel to barium. Thirty-six yields are either primary fission product yields (independent yields) or were corrected (with less than 25% correction) so as to represent independent yields. The independent yields were empirically systematized and a yield-mass curve was constructed. The yield-mass curve is compared with the yield-mass curves obtained from the fission of Bi with 22 and 190-Mev deuterons. The yield systematics indicate that the sum of the mass numbers of complementary fission products is 13 plus or minus 1 amu less tban that of the compound nucleus, and the sum of the charges of complemertary fission products is two units less than that of the compound nucleus. It is postulated that 9 plus or minus 1 neutrons and an alpha particle must have been emitted. Evidence is presented that at least three and possibly more of the neutrons are emitted prior to fission. The most probable charge of the fission products as a function of mass number was determined empirically. It is shown that from mass number 80 to mass number …

The Antihero in the Novels of Juan Antonio de Zunzunegui
Although some of Zunzunegui's works are not so moralistic in intent as others, it will be seen that each one of them criticizes a particular bad trait in the protagonist which leads to unhappiness or defeat, either for the character himself or for someone close to him.

Social Area Analysis and Transportation Patterns: Dallas, Texas, 1960
When the heterogeneity of the city is considered, the sociological implications which stem from this heterogeneity become important to understanding the social structure of the city. One of these sociological implications is intrinsic in the patterns of transportation. This is an ecological study of the structure and changing structure of parts of the city. We will study the relationship between two variables; social area characteristics and patterns of transportation.

The Effectiveness of a Self-Instructional Approach to Teaching a College French Diction Course for Vocal Music Students
The primary purpose of the study was to test a self-instructional approach to teaching a college French diction course to determine if it would equal or surpass in effectiveness a course taught by a traditional approach. The study sought to provide a partial solution to the problems of the increasing student-teacher ration in colleges, and of the individualization of teaching students who have various learning rates and backgrounds.

A Descriptive Ecological Study of Selected First Admissions to a Private Psychiatric Hospital 1960 through 1963
Following Hawley's point of view regarding the definition and inclusiveness of human ecology, ecological data must include both a population and its characteristics and some measurements of the environment of this population. Following Hawley, an ecological investigation must select from available data and examine at least some of the relationships that may exist among these measurable population and environmental characteristics, in an effort to find and isolate the causes of mental disorders, particularly of those now called "functional."

Topological Groups
The notion of a topological group follows naturally from a combination of the properties of a group and a topological space. Since a group consists of a set G of elements which may be either finite or infinite and since this is also common to a topological space, a question is opened as to whether or not it is possible to assign a topology to a set of elements which form a group under a certain operation. Now it is possible to assign a topology to any set of elements if no restriction is placed on the topology assigned and hence this study would be of little value from the standpoint of the group itself. If however it is required that the group operation be continuous in the topological space then a very interesting theory is developed.
