Maladjustment and the Distortion of Self-Perception (open access)

Maladjustment and the Distortion of Self-Perception

Contemporary psychology has shown an increasing interest in the self-concept of the individual. This interest has grown in large measure from studies of perception. Many theorists have felt that perception in general and self-perception in particular is a function of the needs of the organism, as well as a function of the external stimuli. It is the purpose of this study to investigate the relationships between distortions in self-perception and total level of adjustment in a population of college students.

A Comparison of Freshman and Sophomore Art Courses Offered at Texas Junior Colleges with Those Offered for Art Majors at North Texas State University (open access)

A Comparison of Freshman and Sophomore Art Courses Offered at Texas Junior Colleges with Those Offered for Art Majors at North Texas State University

Each year there is an increase in the number of art students who transfer art credits from Texas junior colleges to North Texas State University. The lack of standardization in the junior college art courses indicated an area of investigation in which some procedures might be suggested in order to secure greater continuity and unity between the art curricula of the Texas junior colleges and that of North Texas State University.

A Comparison of the Self-Concepts of Negroes and Jews (open access)

A Comparison of the Self-Concepts of Negroes and Jews

The purpose of this study was to compare self-concepts of Negroes and Jews. The historical background conditions influencing the development of the Jews and Negroes are beyond the scope of this work and are therefore mentioned only incidentally. Two aspects of these two groups are under consideration: (1) How well or poorly do Jews and Negroes function in contemporary American society? (2) What sort of family life is characteristic of Jews and Negroes? These two aspects are considered important in connection with self-concepts, for the first is at least in part a manifestation of the self-concept, and family life is considered important as the major factor in the development of the self-concept. The self-concept and its development are treated more fully in a later part of this paper.

The Comparative Effectiveness of Conventional and Programed Instructional Procedures in Teaching Fundamentals of Music (open access)

The Comparative Effectiveness of Conventional and Programed Instructional Procedures in Teaching Fundamentals of Music

The purpose of this study was to investigate the comparative effectiveness of three out-of-class procedures designed to augment a conventional classroom instructional method in a course in the fundamentals of music for elementary education students. The procedures examined were (a) conventional out-of-class study assignments; (b) out-of-class individual use of a programed textbook; and (c) out-of- class individual use of a teaching machine program. This study was concerned with measures of achievement in fundamentals of music as taught to elementary education students at North Texas State University, Denton, Texas, during the 1963-1964 school year. The measures of achievement in music were limited to the pre-test of fundamentals of music and to the post test, interim test, and retention test of fundamentals of music.

Mechanical and tribological properties of ion beam-processed surfaces (open access)

Mechanical and tribological properties of ion beam-processed surfaces

The intent of this work was to broaden the applications of well-established surface modification techniques and to elucidate the various wear mechanisms that occur in sliding contact of ion-beam processed surfaces. The investigation included characterization and evaluation of coatings and modified surfaces synthesized by three surface engineering methods; namely, beam-line ion implantation, plasma-source ion implantation, and DC magnetron sputtering. Correlation among measured properties such as surface hardness, fracture toughness, and wear behavior was also examined. This dissertation focused on the following areas of research: (1) investigating the mechanical and tribological properties of mixed implantation of carbon and nitrogen into single crystal silicon by beam-line implantation; (2) characterizing the mechanical and tribological properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings processed by plasma source ion implantation; and (3) developing and evaluating metastable boron-carbon-nitrogen (BCN) compound coatings for mechanical and tribological properties. The surface hardness of a mixed carbon-nitrogen implant sample improved significantly compared to the unimplanted sample. However, the enhancement in the wear factor of this sample was found to be less significant than carbon-implanted samples. The presence of nitrogen might be responsible for the degraded wear behavior since nitrogen-implantation alone resulted in no improvement in the wear factor. DLC coatings have low …

X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies of mononuclear non-heme iron enzymes (open access)

X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies of mononuclear non-heme iron enzymes

Fe-K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has been used to investigate the electronic and geometric structure of the iron active site in non-heme iron enzymes. A new theoretical extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis approach, called GNXAS, has been tested on data for iron model complexes to evaluate the utility and reliability of this new technique, especially with respect to the effects of multiple-scattering. In addition, a detailed analysis of the 1s{yields}3d pre-edge feature has been developed as a tool for investigating the oxidation state, spin state, and geometry of iron sites. Edge and EXAFS analyses have then been applied to the study of non-heme iron enzyme active sites.

High statistics study of omega$sup 0$ production at 6 GeV/c (open access)

High statistics study of omega$sup 0$ production at 6 GeV/c

The spin-projected cross sections for $omega$$sup 0$ production at 6 GeV/ c were measured in a counter-spark chamber experiment at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron of Argonne National Laboratory. Results are presented for a sample of 25,000 $omega$$sup 0$ events, and critical tests are shown for any residual background. The reaction is dominated by the s-channel natural-parity helicity one projection (rho$sub 11$ + rho/sub 1-1) dsigma/dt which shows a turnover in the forward direction and no strong dip at t = 0.6 (GeV/c)$sup 2$. The unnatural- parity helicity-zero cross section rho$sub 00$ dsigma/dt shows no forward turnover suggesting a sizeable helicity-nonflip contribution. Comparisons are made with the predictions of a Regge exchange model with absorptive corrections. (auth)
