This dissertation develops and utilizes a methodology for combining data drawn from the manuscript census returns and the county tax rolls to study landless farmers during the period from 1850 until 1880 in three Texas Brazos River Valley counties: Fort Bend, Milam, and Palo Pinto. It focuses in particular on those landless farmers who appear to have had no option other than tenant farming. It concludes that there were such landless farmers throughout the period, although they were a relatively insignificant factor in the agricultural economy before the Civil War. During the Antebellum decade, poor tenant farmers were a higher proportion of the population on the frontier than in the interior, but throughout the period, they were found in higher numbers in the central portion of the river valley. White tenants generally avoided the coastal plantation areas, although by 1880, that pattern seemed to be changing. Emancipation had tremendous impact on both black and white landless farmers. Although both groups were now theoretically competing for the same resource, productive crop land, their reactions during the first fifteen years were so different that it suggests two systems of tenant farming divided by caste. This thesis offers an evaluation of the Mineral Wells, Texas high school. Fifteen hundred points associated with curriculum and school operation were evaluated to draw presented conclusions.

This study was made to determine to what extent behavior problems in fourth grade children in the Palo Pinto Common School, Palo Pinto, Texas, were revealed in their drawings.

181 adolescent home economics students in Palo Pinto County, Texas, were surveyed. The questions examined the following: grades and self concept of academic ability, self concept of academic ability and occupational aspirations, school size and occupational aspirations, sex and occupational aspirations, race and occupational aspirations, parents' occupational aspirations, parents' educational levels and occupational aspirations. The data suggested that career aspirations are positively related to self concept of ability, school grades, school size, race, parents' education, and fathers' occupations. Students' sex and their mothers' occupations were not shown to be related to career aspirations.

The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of filmstrips upon a group of first-grade pupils as compared to another group of first-grade pupils not using filmstrips.

It is generally conceded that the pupil learns more quickly, if his interests are properly guided, and if proper motivation is used. The purpose of this study is to see if the use of the radio, for listening and broadcasting, could cause the child to go about his school activities with a purpose.

The problem in this study is two-fold: (1) to determine the effects of a democratic curriculum upon the educational growth of first-grade children; and (2) to show that, through living the democratic life, the first-grade children developed behavior patterns that fitted them to live more wholesome lives.

The purpose of this research was to compile a presence list of reptiles and amphibians that occur in Palo Pinto County, Texas, and to investigate the ecological distributions and zoogeographic affinities of these herpetiles. The study area was chosen primarily because of its location in North Central Texas and its rugged topography, which sets it apart from the surrounding area.

The objective of this study was to determine the kinds and numbers of food organisms consumed by Corydalus cornutus, and to investigate its periodicity of feeding during the spring months in the Brazos River, Palo Pinto County, Texas. A total of 468 larvae were collected at two-week intervals from February 29 to May 14, 1971. Larvae were taken at opportunity during three periods of the day, 6am.-12pm., 12pm.-6pm., and 6pm.-12am. A total of 23 different food items was observed in the 121 stomachs containing food. An expedient method of dissection of the digestive tract is included.

The value of proper concepts and an adjustable or adaptable personality are teaching factors to be considered in present-day education. The education for richer living must be through the main institutions of learning, the schools.

This study was basically concerned with the effect of occupation on the folklore of the people of Graford, Texas. The people interviewed in that area of North Central Texas were divided into three major occupational groups: ranchers, farmers, and farmer-laborers. At least two members from each of the occupational groups were interviewed; and these interviews revealed that their folklore included folktales, superstitions-remedies, songs, and customs, The customs included household, recreation, school, and church customs. Each informant's folklore was recorded directly as it was related. Then the information was placed in the appropriate categories of folklore. Finally, an analysis of the folklore from the standpoint of the informants occupation was completed. The findings indicated that the various occupations did influence each informant's folklore.

For three years the writer has worked with children from a section in Mineral Wells, Texas, in which home environments were unnecessarily bad. They offered none of the wholesome stimuli for growth and development that homes should give. The houses were drab and cheerless, and the grounds were neglected, often grown up in weeds or cluttered with trash. Through its members, made up of sixth and seventh grade children of Travis Elementary School and including children from the affected homes, plans and procedures were formulated for improving homes, and the interest and cooperation of the parents were secured in extending the improvements over the area. By this plan the writer hoped that life might be made more satisfying for these people as a result of improved surroundings.
