Enhancement of COVID-19 Diagnosis using Machine Learning and Texture Analyses of Lung Imaging

Article proposing CoviSegNet, an enhanced U-Net model to segment ground-glass opacities and consolidations in CT scans of Covid-19 positive patients. The performance of CoviSegNet was evaluated on three public CT datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed CoviSegNet is highly promising.

Organization of knowledge and information in digital archives of language materials

This article reports the first empirical investigation of various dimensions of organization and representation of recorded knowledge and information in language archives. The study used a combination of semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Results demonstrate that, while some of the phenomena related to organization of information in language archives are specific to these types of archives, others are more typical and have been addressed by libraries in past research and practice.

Seeking Mental Health Support Among College Students in Video-Based Social Media: Content and Statistical Analysis of YouTube Videos

This article presents a study that aims to identify strategies for using video-based social media to combat stigmatized diseases, such as mental health, among college students. The authors identify effective strategies for designing video-based social media content for supporting college students’ mental health. Results show that the videos where individuals share their personal stories, as well as experiential knowledge (ie, tips and advice), engaged more viewers in both the short term and long term. Individuals’ videos on YouTube showed the potential to support college students' mental health in unique ways, such as providing social support, validating experience, and sharing the positive experience of help-seeking.

Soft Skills for Entry-Level Engineers: What Employers Want

This article is a review of literature for skills comprised within the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) criteria determined 26 topics necessary for the entry-level and continued success of engineers. The findings suggest that although entry-level engineers have proficiency in all of these ABET required skills, the entry-level engineers were not meeting the level of importance expressed by the organization for 24 of these 26 skills.

Synthetic data for annotation and extraction of family history information from clinical text

This article investigates the use of synthetic data for the annotation and automated extraction of family history information relating to cases of cardiac disease from Norwegian clinical text. This work assesses the validity and applicability of the annotated synthetic corpus using machine learning techniques. The methodology outlined in this article may be useful in other situations where limited availability of clinical text hinders NLP tasks.

Teaching and Learning with Technology During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Highlighting the Need for Micro-Meso-Macro Alignments

This article covers the challenges brought about for teachers and learners from transitioning to online education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors reflect on these challenges based on discussions at EDUsummIT2019 in Quebec about the theme “Learners and learning contexts: New alignments for the digital age." Informed by theoretical conceptualization and empirical evidence the authors identify micro-meso-macro alignments that need to be in place to move education into the digital age: alignments for quality learning contexts, alignments in support for teachers, and alignments through partnerships.
