1.1-meter bore, 8-Tesla test facility

The design and fabrication of a 1.1-m bore superconducting coil for an 8- T facility at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory are discussed. This facility will provide the backing field required for testing large multifilamentary Nb$sub 3$Sn coils as part of the superconductor development program at Livermore. The magnet measures 1.85 m o.d., is 1.5 m in length, and is solenoid wound in four separate modules. Total cold weight of the assembly is 18,000 Kg. A NbTi superconductor is used throughout with a gradation of current density within the magnet to provide complete cryostatic stability. The preliminary design of a large 3500-A multifilamentary Nb$sub 3$Sn insert magnet is also included. Together, the backing coil and insert magnets are designed to produce a 12-T central field in a 0.4m bore. The ''equal area'' theory of cryostatic stability is applied in the design of both magnet systems and is discussed in detail. A large open-mouth cryostat is used and measures 2 m in diameter and 3.7 m in length. Details of Dewar design and the refrigeration requirements are included. (auth)

1. 5 GeV/c multiturn shaving extraction and its transport line for the Brookhaven AGS

A system for fast shaving extraction at 1.5 GeV/c is implemented to extract the circulating beam in five turns. A numerical simulation is first carried out to determine the emittance and the rf structure of the extracted beam. This is followed by several machine study sessions which establish the optimal extraction configuration, confirm the emittance, and modify the transport line for low energy beam. Finally, a one-week run for the Neutrino Oscillation experiment demonstrates that the system is very stable and capable of delivering 7.5 x 10/sup 12/ p/sec with 70% extraction efficiency and 95% transport efficiency.

1.5 megawatt dc chopper power supplies for plasma shape control on Doublet III

The Doublet III device is designed to study noncircular plasmas, including doublet and dee-shaped cross-sections. The plasma shape is determined by a system of 24 field-shaping coils which surround the vacuum vessel. Control of the magnetic flux linking these coils allows the plasma shape to be varied and controlled. This paper describes the high-speed dc chopper which is a major component of the field-shaping coil power system. The high-speed dc choppers, with a frequency response of up to 5 kHz and a switching power capability of 1.5 megawatts are used for fine tuning and feedback control of the plasma position and shape. The design and operation of two 1.5 megawatt, 3 kHz choppers used on closed loop plasma control experiments will be presented.

1/5-scale experiment of a Mark I boiling-water reactor pressure-suppression system under hypothetical LOCA conditions

Experimental results show the sensitivity of hydrodynamically generated vertical loads to changes in the drywell pressurization rate, downcomer submergence, and vent-line loss coefficient. Insignificant effects on peak vertical loads were observed when the vent-line loss was varied. Peak vertical loads can be reduced by adding initial drywell overpressure so that the downcomers are partly cleared of water. Spatial variation of pressure at about the time of vent clearing is seen in comparisons of data from locations along the axis of the toroidal wetwell.

1.06 μm 150 psec laser damage study of diamond turned, diamond turned/ polished and polished metal mirrors

Using a well characterized 1.06 μm 150 ps glass laser pulse the damage characteristics for diamond turned, diamond turned/ polished, and polished copper and silver mirrors less than 5 cm diameter were studied. Although most samples were tested with a normal angle of incidence, some were tested at 45$sup 0$ with different linear polarization showing an increase in damage threshold for S polarization. Different damage mechanisms observed will be discussed. Laser damage is related to residual surface influences of the fabrication process. First attempts to polish diamond turned surfaces resulted in a significant decrease in laser damage threshold. The importance of including the heat of fusion in the one dimensional heat analysis of the theoretical damage threshold and how close the samples came to the theoretical damage threshold is discussed. 1 to 12 GeV/c beam transport for transverse or longitudinally polarized protons

A two-stage beam transport for polarized protons has been constructed and operated at the Argonne ZGS. The first stage delivers vertically polarized protons (N-type) to an elastic scattering polarimeter consisting of a 10 cm long LH/sub 2/ target and two moveable sets of forward and recoil scintillation counters. The unscattered protons transported through the beam's second stage are focused onto the polarized proton target PPT-III; this target utilizes a 2.5 T R and A magnet to produce target polarizations in the horizontal plane, either in the beam direction (L-type) or transverse to it (S-type). The second stage of the beam is equipped with a combination of superconducting solenoids and dipole magnets; thus the beam polarization can also be rotated to point in the L or S direction. The entire system has been operated successfully over the momentum range 1.0 to 11.75 GeV/c with NS, LS, SS, and LL beam target spin directions.

U and Pb isotopic data on samples (10 to 100 gram) 2 to 10 m away from the borders of the Oklo reactor zones indicate a primary age of 2.05 x 10/sup 9/ years for the Oklo deposit and a secondary age of 0.375 x 10/sup 9/ years. All samples show effects of Pb loss; the average loss is 50 percent. Both the U--Pb and Pb isotopic data are consistent with a model of a primary 2.05 x 10/sup 9/ year age of the deposit, continuous volume diffusion of Pb from uraninite, and either continuous or recent loss of this Pb. In this case the 0.375 x 10/sup 9/ year age is an artifact without time significance. Using an average value of D/a/sup 2/ 3.5 x 10/sup -11/ a/sup -1/ (Cowan, this conference) this model explains the apparent 1.8 x 10/sup 9/ year Pb age observed by other workers. From the /sup 208/Pb//sup 206/Pb data the average U/Th value calculated for the Oklo deposit is approximately 100.

The coils major diameter is 1.0 meter and it occupies a cross-section which is about 0.2 meter minor in diameter. The prototype coil will carry four times the current of the largest such magnet built to date. As a result, the peak induction in the coil is about 8 T and the stored magnetic energy will be around 3 MJ. The paper describes the proposed Nb/sub 3/SN superconductor, the quench protection system which is based on the LBL shorted secondary concept, the isochroic refrigeration storage system which stores about 5 kJ of refrigeration between 4.5/sup 0/K and 7/sup 0/K, and the persistent switch.

A vacuum pumping system that provides a cryo surface for condensing and freezing of H/sub 2/ gas is described. A closed-loop vacuum system was designed and built at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory to pump down the neutralizer LH/sub e/ dewar with a volurae of 350 l and the lambda point dewar with a LH/sub e/ volume of 250 l. Both of these dewars can be pumped down simultaneously or one at a time. 100% of the H/sub e/ gas is recovered free of contaminations. The vacuum pump can handle 340 SCFM of gas. The LH/sub e/ dewars are pumped down below the lambda point. This condition reduces the LH/sub e/ container wall temperature to 2.1 deg K giving a base pressure of 10/sup -13/ torr for H/sub 2/ gas/sup 2/. To attain a stable condition the LH /sub e/ baths are puuped down to 33 torr or lower to give a surface temperatare of about 2/sup 0/K/sup 3/. The Baseball II helium factlity is a close loop system. The H/sub e/ gas is recovered from all the LH/sub e/ usage point. This gas is accumulated in one of the two 8000 cu ft inflatable gas bags. The gas from the gas …

3-D object reconstruction emission and transmission tomography with limited angular input

The effects of the angular range of data taking in reconstructions in planar positron cameras using the deconvolution method and the matrix method, respectively, are investigated. It is found that in the absence of any a priori information there are undetermined components in the reconstruction if the field of view of the positron camera is limited. However, most of the undetermined components are recovered in the case in which the transverse spacing of the object is discrete, and all of them are recovered if the fact that the object extent is finite is utilized. It is concluded that the two reconstruction methods are mathematically equivalent. The results obtained can be applied to other transmission and emission imaging devices.

3-dimensional beam scanning system for particle radiation therapy

In radiation therapy treatment volumes up to several liters have to be irradiated. Today's charged particle programs use ridge filters, scattering foils, occluding rings collimators and boluses to shape the dose distribution. An alternative approach, scanning of a small diameter beam, is analyzed and tentative systems specifications are derived. Critical components are scheduled for fabrication and testing at LBL.

10. 6. mu. m damage threshold measurements on sub-one-hundred-ps pyroelectric detectors

Sub-one-hundred-ps response time pyroelectric detectors are being developed at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) to be compatible with the 5-GHz oscilloscope direst-access mode of operation without damage. Strontium barium niobate, lithium tantalate, lanthanum-doped lead zirconate, and lithium niobate are being evaluated for use in the edge and coplanar configurations. Devices designed at LASL are compared with commercially available detectors. Test results of a less than 15-ps risetime, 31-ps fall time 50/50 SBN pyroelectric detector are reported. Measurements to date of the damage threshold at 10.6 ..mu..m of the above materials in bulk, with various surface treatments, and in devices using 100-ps to 100-..mu..s pulses are also reported.

12. 5 MHz heavy ion linac for ion beam fusion

Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is currently developing the injector of a heavy ion beam driver for the inertial confinement fusion program. The first phase of the program is to accelerate about 20 mA of Xe/sup +1/ from a 1.5 MV preaccelerator 11.4 MeV in a low-beta RF linac. The first section of the linac utilizes a single harmonic buncher and independently-phased short linac resonators with a FODO magnetic quadrupole focusing lattice. These are followed by two double-stub Wideroee linacs. A layout of the linac up to 6.4 MeV is shown. The operating parameters of the low-beta linac are given. This paper gives details of the low-beta linac design and results of low power measurements on the first accelerating cavity.

15 MeV neutron damage in Cu and Nb

An investigation was made of high-energy neutron damage in Cu and Nb irradiated with approximately 15 MeV neutrons at the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron. The neutrons were generated by bombarding a thick Be target with 40- MeV deuterons resulting in a high energy neutron spectrum broadly peaked at 15 MeV. Single crystals of Cu and Nb were irradiated at room temperature to fluences of approximately 2 x 10$sup 17$ n/cm$sup 2$. The resulting loop-type defect clusters in the crystals were characterized using x-ray diffuse scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The cluster size distributions were found to be generally similar to those characteristic of fission neutron irradiations in these materials and no multiple clusters or sub-clusters were observed. Additional comparisons with fission reactor irradiations in Cu and Nb indicate that the retained displacement damage in these crystals is approximately 3 times greater for the high-energy neutrons than for an equivalent fluence of fission neutrons. This result is consistent with detailed damage energy calculations for the Be(d,n) neutron spectrum. (auth)

The ..gamma.. rays from neutron capture in the 0- resonance of /sup 107/Ag at 16.3 eV were studied. Thirteen primary transitions populate spin 1 levels in /sup 108/Ag below an energy of 1.5 MeV. Transitions from low lying levels change in intensity by as much as a factor of 2 between thermal neutron capture (largely spin 1) and the 0- resonance, indicating a strong correlation of the population with level spin. 7 references.

19 mm ballistic range: a potpourri of techniques and recipes

The expansion of ballistic gun range facilities at LLL has introduced state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques to glovebox-enclosed ballistic guns systems. These enclosed ballistic ranges are designed for the study of one- dimensional shock phenomena in extremely toxic material such as plutonium. The extension of state-of-the-art phtographic and interferometric diagnostic systems to glovebox-enclosed gun systems introduces new design boundaries and performance criteria on optical and mechanical components. A technique for experimentally evaluating design proposals is illustrated, and several specific examples (such as, target alignment, collateral shrapnel damage, and soft recovery) are discussed. 24-MW neutral-beam injector of 400-keV H/sup 0/

The negative and positive ion systems have both common goals and common problems. In fact, we have identified five items that must be developed before any large, neutral-beam injector, operating continuously or almost so, can be engineered. The five items are: (1) a continuous or almost continuous ion source, with 1A designating a source of positive ions and 1B a direct extraction source of negatives, (2) a recirculating metal-vapor cell, (3) a computer code with which to calculate beam trajectories in three dimensions, (4) a resistive coating to bleed stray charges from the surface of high-voltage vacuum insulators, and (5) an arc suppression technique for large systems. These items are discussed and it is shown how their development is prerequisite to the design of a 24-MW, 400-keV neutral hydrogen injector such as might be required for a fusion power reactor.

25 megajoule energy storage and delivery system for the Shiva laser

A 25 megajoule, 20 kV capacitive energy storage and delivery system has been built and tested for Shiva--a 20 arm, 10 kJ, 20 TW neodymium glass fusion research laser. This system supplies over 3.5 megamperes to xenon flashlamps for optical pumping of the laser amplifier. About 15% of the energy is used to establish magnetic fields within Faraday rotator glass. A digital based control and diagnostics scheme is employed through the entire pulse power system. This scheme utilizes a distributed digital data bus that addresses every element through two levels of optical isolation. The interfacing of low level digital circuitry to a pulse power environment is discussed, as well as the design and performance of the total system. Cost and manufacturing details are important in a project of this size. The projected cost goal of 27 cents/joule, installed and operating, has been met. The general approach to the design, transient analysis, manufacture, and activation of this large power conditioning system is also discussed.

30-MJ superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit for stabilizing an electric transmission system

Electric power systems that have major loads and generation centers separated by large distances may experience low-frequency power oscillations. This type of oscillation has occurred on the Pacific ac intertie that connects southern California and the Pacific Northwest. A separate, almost parallel, dc-transmission line also connects these areas. The Bonneville Power Administration, which operates this transmission system, has overcome the instability by controlling the power transmitted on the dc-transmission line. A 30-MJ (8.4-kWh) superconducting magnetic energy storage unit with a 10-MW converter could also provide damping for this instability. The conceptual design of the 30-MJ coil and the cryogenic and electrical components of the system are described. The system is to operate at a maximum current of 5 kA and will modulate the ac Intertie at 0.35 Hz. Discharge will be controlled to retain a minimum stored energy of 20 MJ to limit cyclic strains in the coil and ac losses in the conductor. The conductor will be made of multistrand-copper and copper-matrix, multifilament NbTi superconducting wires on a stainless steel mandrel.
