SMALL-ORDER SHAPE FACTORS IN In$sup 114$, P$sup 32$, AND Y$sup 9$$sup 0$

The beta spectra of In/sup 114/, P/sup 32/, and Y/sup 90/ were stud ied closely in an intermediate-image beta-ray spectrometer and compared to theoretical predictions in terms of a linear shape factor of the form (1 + aW). The values obtained for a were s for P/sup 32/, and (-0.0047 plus or minus 0.0008)/mc/sup 2/ for Y/sup 90/, all for electron kinetic energies from about 200 kev up to near the maximum beta energies. Tests were made to give indications for spectrometer fidelity. Because of the linearity of the shape-factor plots and the similarity in energy range, the comparative results from In/sup 114/, P/ sup 32/, and Y/sup 90/ are tak en as a definite indication that for at least two of these activities the shape factors have nonzero slopes, irrespective of questions of instrumental fidelity. Positron Scanner for Brain Tumors (open access)

Positron Scanner for Brain Tumors

It was thought that if a multi-detector device could be developed, the scanning time would be greatly shortened, with such consequent advantages as being able to work with lower dose of radiation, to obtain serial determinations, and to work with shorter-lived isotopes.

THERMAL STUDY OF CRYSTAL FIELD SPLITTINGS IN ERBIUM ETHYLSULFATE (open access)

THERMAL STUDY OF CRYSTAL FIELD SPLITTINGS IN ERBIUM ETHYLSULFATE

The heat capacities of erbium and yttrium ethylsulfates were measured in the range 12-300 deg K. The magnetic contribution of the erbium ion was evaluated with the help of an assumption concernlng the difference in lattice contributions between the erbium and yttrium salts. The contribution agrees, to within experimental error, with the experimental energy level scheme for the /sup 4/I/ sub 15/2/ state previously published. (auth)

Proceedings of the First International Symposium on the Biological Interpretation of Dose from Accelerator-Produced Radiation, Held at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, California, March 13--16, 1967 (open access)

Proceedings of the First International Symposium on the Biological Interpretation of Dose from Accelerator-Produced Radiation, Held at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, California, March 13--16, 1967

The objective of the meeting was to provide a companion meeting to the ''First Symposium on Accelerator Radiation Dosimetry and Experience'' which was held November 3-5, 1965, at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. This first symposium was limited in scope to an intensified discussion of dosimetry techniques. The biology which is associated with high energy radiation was specifically excluded, since it was the original plan to hold a second symposium devoted entirely to biology. Thus the present Symposium was a sequel to the first and they were inseparable in their objectives. Since those attending the BNL Symposium were almost entirely health physicists with a background in physical science and actively engaged in the solution of radiation protection problems at high energy accelerators, it was felt that it would be necessary to begin the BID Symposium with a general review session on radiation biology, in order to provide a biological background for the proper understanding of the later sessions. This first session was arranged to give the health physicist a meaningful transition from fundamental radiobiological considerations to current new research activities in high energy biology. In our opinion, and also based on the comments of several of those attending these objectives were …
