Making Fair Use Make More Sense: A White Paper (open access)

Making Fair Use Make More Sense: A White Paper

This document is part of a series of white papers on various copyright issues. Fair use is a powerful tool for people who want to use and expand on copyrighted works. Fair use is special among the other copyright exceptions because it isn’t specifically targeted at one kind of use. Instead, fair use is purposely open ended to permit many different kinds of uses. One downside of this however, is that it can be difficult for anyone — lawyer and nonlawyer alike — to figure what is/isn’t fair use under the law. This white paper attempts to review the fair use statute, go over its famous “four factor test,” and offers some suggestions about how to think through each part.

3D Atom Probe Tomography Study on Segregation of Yttrium in Modified Aluminum-Silicon Alloys (open access)

3D Atom Probe Tomography Study on Segregation of Yttrium in Modified Aluminum-Silicon Alloys

In this article, yttrium segregation behavior in Al-Si alloys has been studied using the three-dimensional atom probe tomography technique. Al-Si alloys were prepared by casting method, and yttrium was added to modify the eutectic silicon morphology in these alloys. The results indicated that yttrium is preferentially located within the Si phase, with the highest concentration at the interface between eutectic Al and eutectic Si.

Transitioning from Acute to Chronic Pain: An Examination of Different Trajectories of Low-Back Pain (open access)

Transitioning from Acute to Chronic Pain: An Examination of Different Trajectories of Low-Back Pain

The article examines the most recent trajectory research, and highlights the importance of developing a broader model for patient evaluation. Traditionally, there has been a widely accepted notion that the transition from acute to chronic pain follows a linear trajectory, where an injury leads to acute episodes, subacute stages, and progresses to a chronic pain condition. However, it appears that pain progression is much more complicated and individualized than this original unsupported assumption.
